Leadership Tools by Dr. Don Meyer
Photo of Dr. Meyer Keller, Timothy. "The Prodigal God." Dutton: New York, 2008.

The parable of the prodigal son is one that most churched and un-churched people recognize. The youngest takes his inheritance and goes to live his life frivolously spending it on anything he desired, and with nothing left he comes back to his father and repents. His father accepts him with open arms and a forgiving heart. We can't forget about the other son though. What was his response? When he saw all this he was in disbelief that his father would be so willing and so quick to forgive.

The Prodigal God, written by Pennsylvania born Dr. Timothy Keller, defines not just the definition of a prodigal, but also how it relates to the two sons and the father. Often the "prodigal" label is strictly stuck on the son but in essence it is relatable to all of the characters in some way. According to the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary prodigal is a term meaning, "recklessly spendthrift." Keller opens up a whole new meaning to this New Testament parable taking us deeper into its application. While we as people are "reckless spendthrifts" we have a God who recklessly spends his grace on us
