Four Flags for Flower Chapel
|
 |
On November 11, Veteran's Day, people all over the country paused to honor those who have served our country in the military. VFCC joined the nation by holding a special Chapel service recognizing the graduates and students who have served in the armed forces, and featuring alumnus Army Chaplain Angel Perez '96. Four new flags, each representing a branch of the United States military, were also dedicated and added to the collection of those lining the Flower Chapel walls.

VFCC recently paused to thank one of its most supportive community leaders. On November 18, a special chapel service was dedicated to the recognition of Phoenixville Mayor Leo Scoda, who is retiring after 16 years in office. Leaders from the College, borough, and county came together to pay tribute to the exemplary work of this local hero.

Giving Hope Through Theater
|
 |
As part of freshman orientation at VFCC, Geri (Stepien) Campbell '89 was asked to record on a piece of paper what she felt God was calling her to do with her life. Without hesitation, she drew comedy and tragedy masks and wrote: "I want to do Christian theater and have it produced on Broadway."

At the end of October, a group of orphaned and underprivileged children from Uganda brought a blessing to the VFCC campus during a unique Missions Chapel. These children, known collectively as Mwamba Children's Choir, performed songs and dances that shared the confidence and love found in Jesus - while bringing smiles to the faces of every audience member. As a result, students and staff sought to bless the children, after being so blessed by their time and talents.

From October 25 to November 3, Curtain Call staged six productions of their fall play, "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten." In showcasing this particular drama, the student leaders of the theatrical community on campus simultaneously celebrated the 75th Anniversary of VFCC and paid homage to Curtain Call's ten-year history by performing the first play that was ever put on by the group.

During a life-changing summer as an intern with Holy Hands, Rebekah Reese '09 experienced one-on-one evangelism like she never had before. For the first time, she saw genuine street conversations result in Christ-followers and she learned during that experience, without a doubt, what she wanted to do with the rest of her life.

Leadership Tools by Dr. Don Meyer
|
Keller, Timothy. "The Prodigal God." Dutton: New York, 2008.
The parable of the prodigal son is one that most churched and un-churched people recognize. The youngest takes his inheritance and goes to live his life frivolously spending it on anything he desired, and with nothing left he comes back to his father and repents. His father accepts him with open arms and a forgiving heart. We can't forget about the other son though. What was his response? When he saw all this he was in disbelief that his father would be so willing and so quick to forgive.
The Prodigal God, written by Pennsylvania born Dr. Timothy Keller, defines not just the definition of a prodigal, but also how it relates to the two sons and the father. Often the "prodigal" label is strictly stuck on the son but in essence it is relatable to all of the characters in some way. According to the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary prodigal is a term meaning, "recklessly spendthrift." Keller opens up a whole new meaning to this New Testament parable taking us deeper into its application. While we as people are "reckless spendthrifts" we have a God who recklessly spends his grace on us.
