Colvin, Geoff. Talent Is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else. Portfolio: New York, 2010. From listening to an accomplished musician skillfully use their instrument or watching a professional football player run a play perfectly and score the winning touchdown, to reading a world-renown author's words that jump off the pages and become real, we are legitimately inspired and in awe of the talent that these individuals possess. Some would say that with a little hard work anyone could be in their shoes while others attribute their talent to God. It's important to realize that just because God has given you a gift doesn't mean that honing that talent and becoming proficient will be an easy journey that happens instantly. A concert pianist isn't just born overnight. It all takes some time, effort and deliberate practice.
In Geoff Colvin's book, Talent Is Overrated, Colvin shines some insightful light on this subject which has left ordinary people come to "melancholy terms" with their performance. While God can do whatever He wills, it doesn't mean that we as His children sit back with no participation. Like life, honing skills and becoming proficient in an area means that there will always need to be time and effort put forth into making it truly accomplished. Colvin sorts out the different ideas that may cloud our thinking on achievement as well as gives some good tips for truly becoming a world-class performer. Whether you have a particular passion welling up within your heart or if you just want to live life in excellence, this book may help propel you to future levels of accomplishment. |
