WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP FORUM RECAP
| |
In October of 2014, the I-94 West Chamber of Commerce introduced the Women's Leadership Forum, a unique networking series with a focus on topics and issues that are important to women in business. The event features one or two Spotlight Sponsors each month, with a representative from the business invited to speak to the group for three minutes, sharing the history of their organization or information about their own personal career journey. Each month highlights a different topic with a presentation from a subject matter expert. Recent topics have included Budgets and Finances, Professional Image, and Public Speaking. During our first meeting, Sharol Tyra of Life Illumination Coaching and chair of the Women's Leadership Forum Steering Committee, shared ideas for managing personal and business finances and encouraged participants to address their ideas about money. November featured Professional Image consultant Dawn Stebbing, who gave tips on looking your best. December's topic was Public Speaking, with information on creating a memorable pitch as well as a presentation from Sherri Newman of the Rogers Toastmasters: seven tips for making better connections while networking. Attendance at WoLF events have exceeded our initial expectations, so much that the meetings can no longer be scheduled at the Chamber office. Most meetings going forward will now be held at the Holiday Inn Mpls NW - Elk River in Otsego. Bull Run Coffee has provided morning fuel, and our Spotlight Sponsors have provided varied and interesting information. WoLF committee members are very excited to build this community and to see new faces every month. "Regulars and newcomers are gathering for business connections and to stay on our learning edge," said Committee Chair Sharol Tyra of Life Illumination Coaching. "We invite everyone to join us and to bring a friend. Everyone is welcome, members and non-members at any point in their career." A maximum of two Spotlight Sponsorships are available each month. The cost is $15 and provides sponsors an opportunity to speak for three minutes and provide promotional items or information. Spotlight Sponsors are featured on all marketing materials. In addition, the Chamber offers three Women's Leadership Forum Sponsorships each year for $250. The sponsors' logos are featured prominently on all marketing materials throughout the year. Sponsorships are still available. Please contact the Chamber office if interested. Topics and speakers for upcoming months are being secured. Topics include Time Management and Organization, Real Estate and Mortgage, and Work/Life Balance. If you are interested in speaking or joining the Steering Committee, please contact Sara at the Chamber office.

GROW MINNESOTA! UPDATE
| |
STATEWIDE BUSINESS ASSISTANCE -
We ended the fiscal year with a record total of over 200 companies assisted.
This emphasizes the importance of Grow Minnesota! (GM!) visits. Roughly one in four of the companies GM! visited in 2014 looked to partners as their primary contact for resources and solutions to their business concerns. This number will continue to grow as more businesses are visited statewide.
IT ALL STARTS WITH A GROW MN! VISIT - Examples of partnership business assistance
Here are just two examples of GM! assistance. There are hundreds more, representing a variety of issues that have surfaced during GM! visits. We will continue to share examples in all future weekly update emails.
Issue: Workforce needs, specifically related to skills in the trades.
Assistance: Chamber partnered with Northwest Technical College (NTC), employers and the NTC Foundation to develop ways to encourage more Bemidji High School students to enter careers in the trades.
Result: The NTC Foundation now has Trade Up scholarships for high school seniors.. and Bemidji companies will have more well-trained local employees!
Keep up the great work. Each business and each job is important. You are making a positive difference every day!
NEW STATE RESOURCES FOR BUSINESSES - Share with your local businesses!
- Greater Minnesota Job Expansion Program provides tax benefits to businesses that increase employment - even if adding as few as two employees!Complete this initial assessment to see if you are eligible to participate. If you can answer 'yes' to all the questions, you may apply.

NEWS COMPILATION - Major changes at Minnesota companies (Attachment). Changes noted may signal the need for a timely Grow MN! visit or revisit. Don't miss out on making a timely connection!
BUSINESS RESOURCE CENTER - Please share with your local businesses.
