Message from the President:
Although we haven't been lucky enough to experience cooler weather yet, Fall is just around the corner. This means that my term as President is almost over. I want to thank everyone for making 2013 another great year for Chapter 55. The hard work and dedication of our executive council, committee members and Margaret Alessandrini, our IREM Administrative Executive, continue to make our chapter successful. But 2013 isn't over yet, and IREM Louisiana Chapter 55 still has a lot to offer this year!
The July luncheon was recently held at Commander's Palace in New Orleans. We were fortunate to be joined by Joe Greenblatt, CPM, 2013 IREM National President Elect and Deena Griffis, CPM, IREM Regional Vice President. Joe updated us on IREM's latest endeavors and offerings and provided a preview of things to come.
Our Friends of IREM Cocktail Social was held August 21 at the Mellow Mushroom in Metairie. The turnout was excellent and vendors and members alike enjoyed the opportunity to mingle and get to know one another. Kudos to the Friends of IREM committee for organizing another successful event and for continuing to increase membership in the Friends of IREM program!
The final luncheon of 2013 will be held at Ralph's on the Park on September 18. Clancy Dubos will speak on the local political landscape. This is also our election luncheon. Once the new board is voted in, they will take office on November 1.
We are partnering with St. Michael's Special School again this year for our community service project. It will be held the afternoon of September 27. We'd love to have as many members as possible attend, and please invite family or friends to volunteer with us. Please RSVP to margaret@iremlouisiana.org.
The CPM Capstone course will be offered in New Orleans September 30 - October 4. The location will be 1515 Poydras. This is a great opportunity for CPM candidates to take this required course without traveling out of state. Please register for the final CPM course and complete your designation! Register here today!
Our annual golf tournament will be held November 11 at Beau Chene Country Club. The Golf Tournament Committee is hard at work planning the tournament, which is the chapter's most important fundraising event. A portion of the proceeds benefit the Special Olympics and the remainder are critical to our Chapter's operations. Please take the time to contact your vendors and ask them to consider a sponsorship or just playing in the tournament. Please contact me or a golf committee member if you or someone you know is interested in becoming a sponsor. Also, please ask your favorite restaurants and businesses to consider donating a gift certificate to be used as a prize.
The RES201 track will be offered in Shreveport November 4 - 8 at the clubhouse at the Pier Landing Apartments, located at 3201 Dee Street in Shreveport. Successful completion of the track allows ARM candidates to complete the educational requirement for the ARM designation in just one week. Don't miss this great opportunity to earn your ARM designation! Please click here to register today.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for allowing me to serve as President of IREM Louisiana Chapter 55 this year. It has been an honor and great learning experience. I am excited about the 2014 slate of new leaders and the ideas and energy they will bring to the Chapter. Please support them in their efforts next year.
I look forward to seeing everyone at an IREM function this year. As always, please feel free to email me at president@iremlouisiana.org

Legislative Update:
Terrorism Risk Insurance
In May 2013. Representatives Mike Capuano and Peter King introduced the "Terrorism Risk Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2013 (TRIPRA). This legislation, if enacted, will extend the Terrorism Risk Insurance Program for 10 years.
As many commercial property owners know, in light of the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, the insurance industry announced it would no longer cover terrorism claims due to sustaining over $40 billion in losses. This was a blow to the commercial real estate industry making it increasingly difficult for property owners to manage or acquire properties, or to refinance loans. Congress responded and TRIA was enacted in 2002 in an effort to establish a federal backstop for commercial property and casualty insurers arising from terrorism. The Act required property and casualty insurance companies in all fifty states to offer terrorism coverage to commercial property policyholders as well as requiring private insurers to cover losses capped at $100 million. This measure has been extended twice so far and will in expire in 2014.
This piece of legislation acts in conjunction with the recently proposed legislation, H.R. 508, or the "Terrorism Risk Insurance Act of 2002 Reauthorization Act of 2013".In February 2013, Representative Michael Grimm introduced the bill with 30 bipartisan co-sponsors.
IREM supports and encourages the passage of this important legislation. The bill's passage is essential to providing coverage for events related to terrorism and war. IREM will continue to lobby for enactment if TRIPRA as well as the reauthorization of TRIA.
