A Note from the Principal

Dear Parents,

I spent the end of last week in Washington, DC at a conference of Jesuit parish grade schools. One of the speakers we were lucky to listen to is a Jesuit priest named Howard Gray. He is a former literature professor, currently serving as the assistant to the president for special projects at Georgetown University. His remarks have stayed with me over the course of the week.

Using the story of the Good Samaritan, Fr. Gray outlined what it takes to truly interact with other people. First, we have to see someone. This means not just looking at a person. Rather, it means taking in the information through our eyes that leads us to a place where we can, however briefly, realize what it is to walk in that person's shoes. Second, using that brief empathetic moment, we have to feel something. Maybe it's happiness; maybe it's compassion; maybe it's pity...but we have to feel something for the other. Third, we have to do something. Perhaps it's a small action like a handshake or a kind word or two; perhaps it's more involved liked spending an hour with a friend to help them through an issue or project. Finally, we have to make some sort of connection. In the story of the Good Samaritan, he tells the innkeeper to take care of the injured man and that when the Samaritan returns, he'll pay for the cost of the care. The Samaritan connected another, the innkeeper, to the man. He starts a network of sorts.

This little instructional story for human interactions is one we should think about. It's one our students should think about. It is growing easier for us to live in a compartmentalized world where we don't have to interact anymore. I worry that we are slowly losing the ability to see and feel and truly connect. These four simple steps: seeing, feeling, doing, and connecting can help us find truer connections with those around us.

A Note from the Middle School Director

Dear 5th through 8th Grade Families,

The Middle School halls and classrooms are bustling with activity.

Our eight grade students did an excellent job last night bringing the Passion of Jesus Christ to life in a play directed by Annie DiMartino, the Director of Education at Book-It Repertory Theatre, and our music teacher, Diana Bolstad. If you missed the performance last night, you are welcome to join us on Friday morning, March 25 in the church at 10:30 a.m.

All seventh and eighth grade students and their advisors will go out into the community to serve others today after gathering in the church for a prayer service. I am looking forward to joining Mr. Finn's and Ms. Zadra's advisory group to work with Earthcorps at a park in West Seattle.

Kudos, to our seventh and eighth grade Exploratory Drama class for an outstanding job acting in a rendition of The Pied Piper of Hamelin last Thursday and Friday. Thank you, to Darcy Carlsen, for sharing her passion for acting with our young thespians. I hear Ms. Carlsen is already busy planning for next year's play.

Today marks the official end of Trimester 3 - where does the time go? PowerSchool is closed until April 4 to allow teachers to enter report card grades and comments.

Thank you to our fifth grade students who raised over $874 selling shamrock tattoos to support Water 1st International, and to everyone who bought a raffle ticket in this year's Pi Day raffle; this year we raised $542 to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Peace and Blessings,

Mary Helen
A Note from the Primary School Director

Dear Kindergarten - 4th Grade Parents,

Do You Need A Brain Break Today?

Our lives are hectic; our childrens' lives are hectic; the pace is fast and at times we just need to take a break!!  The education world is buzzing about the importance of students taking brain breaks during the school day.  There are many ways to implement brain breaks, from engaging, online exercise routines at https://www.gonoodle.com/to very simple practices having students use hands and feet to cross the midline in their brains.  Recently I attended a workshop about brain breaks, and the research around the benefits of brain breaks was quite impressive and compelling.  Basically, brain breaks are quick and effective ways of changing the focus of students to help activate and energize the brain.  Research shows that brain breaks can improve concentration and reduce stress.

Suggested brain breaks take place for one to two minutes and could be used every 30 to 60 minutes.  Many classrooms in the primary school are using brain break strategies throughout the day.  I've participated in gonoodle brain breaks in both Mrs. Kasten's and Mrs. McLaughlin's classrooms, where my coordination was put to the test!  Students respond very positively to the physical activity and settle right back into their work after the break.  Think about those evening homework sessions, and you too can creatively incorporate fun and challenging brain breaks into a work session.  The internet offers many resources and suggested activities along with research outlining brain break benefits.  To get you started, here's a basic brain break called the "Cross Crawl"...

Cross Crawl 1. Stand up. 2. Place your right hand across the body to the left knee as you raise it. 3. Do the same thing for the left hand on the right knee just as if you were marching. 4. Do this for 2 minutes.

Our teachers will participate in a workshop this Friday here at St. Joe's.  The focus is on serving diverse learners at every grade level.  We will share more information with you in the coming weeks.

We welcome the Accreditation Visiting Team to St. Joseph School beginning Sunday, March 20th, for four days.  During this time, the team of seven will validate the information we have written about in our self-study by spending significant time in classrooms as well as meeting with faculty and staff, Fr. John Whitney, the School Commission and Parent Board.  The visit is an excellent opportunity to showcase the great work that is taking place at St. Joe's.

God Bless,

Lil
