From the Principal An older gentleman and member of our parish called me the other day and told me the following story. Over Valentine's Day, he said, I received the nicest batch of cards from a group of seventh grade students.I don't have any family around, so those cards made me so happy. Actually, I'm still happy. I don't think the kids know just how much they lifted me up. I was going through some intense physical therapy at the time, he said. It was causing me to be so depressed. You see, my wife died six years ago and I'm lonely. These kids made me less lonely and I want them to understand what it means to pay it forward. I'd like to send the school a check for $1,000 to show my appreciation for what they did. Would you please make sure you let the students know just how happy they made me? I don't know if I have the words to do it, he said. I told him I'd try to do the words he just used justice... Good story, right? What I'm told by Ms. Fiterman, the teacher whose advisory did this good deed, is that the students want to give this man's gift to the charities the school supports. They clearly do understand what it means to pay it forward. Patrick

Third graders take the stage
A group of St. Joe's third graders stole the show last weekend in the Bishop Blanchet High School production of Children of Eden at the Moore Theater in downtown Seattle. Well known for its outstanding drama program, Blanchet tapped St. Joseph talent from Ms. Mead's third grade class to sing like seasoned performers on stage with the top-notch high school cast. Ms. Betsy Baeskens, their music teacher, was in the audience to applaud the performance. The students worked hard and wowed the crowd of over 1,000.
First graders thank local precinct
Inspired by the first responders in Boston, 1A students decided to write letters to our local Seattle Police Department precinct. They thanked them for protecting them and serving our community. "You are our hero!" was a typical message. These young students embody a hopeful, positive message. Well done.
Service Hours - Help out on May 4 or 5
Does your 8th grader need just a few more service hours? St Vincent de Paul needs students to hold collection baskets after Mass on the weekend of May 4 and 5. All Masses need 4 students, so there is a lot of space available. Two hours of service are available. Contact Tom Newman to sign up or for more information. Phone 206-324-2729 or email tommynewman@comcast.net

Order Summer Workbooks
You may preview the workbooks and direct questions to the LRC. Complete the workbook order form and return with a $17.00 payment for each book by Friday, May 17th to the main office, the LRC, or your student's classroom teacher. You should order for your child's current grade level.
New Summer Tutoring ProgramSt. Joseph School is pleased to announce a new summer school tutoring program. For your convenience, St. Joseph teachers can tutor your child at the school and help them practice skills, move ahead, and get ready for fall. Cost is $65/hour billed to your school account. For more information on the school website and to sign up, click here. After School Study Club Beginning in the fall, St Joe's will be offering an after-school study skills program for incoming 5th and 6th grade students. Students will meet every day for a formal study hall with St. Joseph staff member Mr. Andrews to work on study habits, daily homework, ongoing projects as well as papers. In preparation for Jr. High, students will focus on recording assignments in their planners, prioritizing their time, setting and accomplishing goals and improving their grades. We will focus on tracking students progress through PowerSchool and confronting troublesome subjects. When students finish their daily tasks, they will be allowed to hang in the lounge area or be dismissed as requested by parents. Twice a month we will be going on fun field trips to places like the movies or Gameworks. More information will be coming home with your child soon. National Bike to School Day, Wednesday May 8 St. Joseph School, the Parent Association Board, and the Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation invite you to participate in National Bike to School Day, designed to encourage bicycle commuting and mentor new riders. We envision Bike-to-School Day as a family project, one that may also introduce parents to the fun of cycling with their kids! All participants who ride on BTS day (May 8th) will be granted a "Free Dress Day" for one of the remaining school days by Mr. Fennessy. However, there is a school Mass on May 8 so free dress is not allowed on Bike to School day itself.
We also realize that it is impractical for many students to bicycle from home to St. Joseph's due to the distance, hills, etc. In order to provide an opportunity for everyone to participate, a group of students and parents will bicycle from Volunteer Park (in Front of the Asian Art Museum) to St. Joseph School at 7:45 a.m. on May 8.This year we would like to have additional parent volunteers along the route to help coordinate, and we especially need parent volunteers at the school to help store the bikes in the Parish Hall under the church during the school day. Please contact Paul Freiburger at paulfreiburger@hotmail.com or 206-568-0440 if you can help out. So, how do you participate? It's easy! Bike to school on May 8 and let your teacher know that you participated. Your teacher will provide you with a free dress pass that can be used on a future school day. If you plan to bicycle more than a mile, or all of the way up Capitol Hill, or along any other interesting route please e-mail your story to paulfreiburger@hotmail.com so he can report it to the Cascade Bicycle Club. Last year St. Joseph's had one of the highest number of student participants in the whole city (160+)!
