Meals for Home Bound Seniors: Stories from the road that Touch Our Hearts
Two of our clients have been married for over 60 years. The wife was recently in the hospital after a bad fall so her husband suspended the delivery of our meals. When his wife was moved into a board and care close by he resumed our meals just for himself. He visits his wife every day and brings his meal with him so that he can eat it with her. The staff at the board and care heats up his meal for him and serves them together.

Intergenerational Month in Review
Every September, people celebrate Intergenerational month all over the world! Even though we at ONEgeneration are so fortunate to experience the benefits of Intergenerational activities daily we still added special programing to help celebrate the month. We kicked off the month with a Pancake Breakfast cooked and served by ONEgeneration Staff, we participated in the SFV Walk to End Alzheimer's, we had a Mad Science Presentation and we closed the month with a Drum Circle!  Here are some highlights from last month:

Donation to the Adult Daycare

In September, an anonymous donor among ONEgeneration's Adult Daycare families made a generous offer to match up to $1000.00 in community donations to support our Adult Daycare program. ONEgeneration was able to meet the match with a $1000.00 Community Connections Donation from Wells Fargo.

With the combined $2000.00 received, ONEgeneration has paid the license fee to begin the certification process with Music & Memory. As stated on their website, the goal of Music & Memory is to provide individualized playlists to adults with Alzheimer's Disease and other forms of Dementia to help them "reconnect with the world through music-triggered memories." Adult Daycare staff members will start training in the program in October. Remaining funds were used to purchase new furniture to support programming that fits a Person Centered Care model. The furniture will be used for activities that promote interaction and engagement among program participants.

ONEgeneration is very grateful for this opportunity to expand our programs and thankful to the donors that made it possible!

Music & Memory

Music & Memory is a neuroscience research about how our brains respond to music, tested and proven in more than 80 long-term care facilities throughout the USA and Canada.  The personalized music system has provided therapeutic benefits for thousands of people who have dementia.

Here are some of the benefits:

  • Gives pleasure to people with dementia
  • Offers an enjoyable, fulfilling activity for those who are bed-bound
  • Increases cooperation and attention, reduces resistance to care
  • Reduces agitation and sundowning
  • Enhances engagement and socialization, fostering a calmer social environment
  • Provides a valuable tool for the effort to reduce reliance on anti-psychotic and anti-anxiety medication

Dr. David Stern's Expert Corner -
Dementia and Alzheimer's

Last month I began a discussion of Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia. It was in 1906 that the German physician, Dr. Alois Alzheimer, first described the condition of a woman suffering from memory loss, disorientation, and hallucinations, who died when she was only 55. The post mortem revealed the amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in her brain that are characteristic of what is now known as Alzheimer's disease.

Since that time, we have come to understand that the plaques form when fragments of the protein beta-amyloid clump together between nerve cells in the brain. The tangles represent microtubule structures within the nerve cell that collapse in the presence of altered tau protein.

What we don't yet fully understand is why people develop Alzheimer's disease. While there is a traceable genetic cause apparent in the few with early-onset Alzheimer's, that clear connection has not been found in the more common form of Alzheimer's, that begin in people who are over 6o. What we do know is that there are changes in the brain that begin as long as of 10 to 20 years before there are first signs of illness.

Alzheimer's disease progresses from mild to moderate to severe dementia. The first symptoms may vary from person to person, but initial problems may include:
  • Impaired ability to take in and retain new information; the same question being asked over and over, or misplacing personal belongings.
  • Impaired reasoning; trouble handling money and paying bills, poor understanding of safety risks.
  • Impaired visuospatial abilities; inability to recognize faces or common objects.
  • Impaired speech; word-finding difficulties.
  • Personality and behavior changes.
As the disease progresses memory loss and confusion grow worse.

Dr. Stern serves as the Medical Director of ONEgeneration's Adult Day Healthcare Program. He reviews participant care plans and makes recommendations for enhanced care. ONEgeneration Child Care Earns National NAEYC Accreditation
Program recognized among the top in the nation by earning accreditation

ONEgeneration Childcare has earned accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)-the world's largest organization working on behalf of young children.

NAEYC Accreditation is a rigorous and transformative quality-improvement system that uses a set of 10 research-based standards to collaborate with early education programs to recognize and drive quality-improvement in high-quality early learning environments. "We are very proud to have earned the mark of quality from NAEYC, and to be recognized for our commitment to reaching the highest professional standards" said Dr. Kristine Vardanyan, Center Director. Our mission is to enrich the lives of children, seniors and their families throughout our diverse community. We provide families with the opportunity for natural encounters between generations. Our unique Intergeneration Program provides for daily opportunities for the children to interact with our "neighbors", the seniors. Through exciting activities such as creative art, cooking, movement, gardening and games, we establish caring connections between children and seniors. These interactions help children acquire new interests, skills and learn the meaning of acceptance, cooperation and compassion. We recognize the value of these connections and provide positive and developmentally appropriate interactions for our older and younger participants. ONEgeneration childcare provides a nurturing, diverse environment where children can develop socially, emotionally, cognitively and physically.

Encino Farmers Market

Stock up to get a head start on cold and flu season.

Also, please stop by and welcome Kindred Spirit Care Farm to our market. They are a locally based farm out of the John R. Wooden High School for at risk kids. Adult Daycare Partners with UCLA

In April 2016, ONEgeneration's Adult Daycare became a partner with UCLA's Alzheimer's and Dementia Care Program. Care Managers from UCLA's program are now able to provide vouchers to families in need of our Adult Daycare services. This allows access to the program to individuals who might otherwise be unaware of the service or unable to afford the cost. Participation in the Adult Daycare program provides respite to the caregivers and cognitive stimulation, socialization, exercise, nursing monitoring, participation in intergenerational programming and much more to the individual diagnosed with Dementia. Participating caregivers also have access to the center's Caregiver Support Group. The partnership with UCLA has been working very well.  So far we have been able to provide many services to our new ONEgeneration families!

"Beyond the Rocking Chair"
Webb Weiman, Founder of Jump!

After my mother passed away, I witnessed my own father living in isolation. At the time we were living under the same roof and I would ensure I checked in on him daily as he tended to stay in his darkened bedroom where he rocked back and forth for days. I'm sure everyone has their own definition of isolation, but that's pretty isolated if you ask me, and I knew this was no life for anyone, let alone
my father. It was at that moment I was positive there had to be life beyond the rocking chair, but to what extreme would I go to help? After pondering it for a bit, I retrieved my mother's old phone book from my sister and got my dad a date. Those dates led to 22-years of a successful second marriage where he got to witness six grandchildren brought into this world.

My father got a new lease on life, and I got the inspiration to start Jump!
Jump! is a nonprofit organization that helps seniors achieve what's left on their bucket list as well as highlights those who continue to live extraordinary and inspirational lives.

Don't let the name fool you. I worked for over 24 years in Post Production and our first participant was about to "jump" out of a plane on her 90th birthday! That was five years ago, and the one thing I've learned is that more individuals are not letting age get in the way of pursuing their dreams. So what's on your bucket list? Let Jump! help make it happen!
