Dr. David Stern's Expert Corner -
What is a Geriatrician?

A geriatrician is a physician who is specifically trained to deal with the health needs of the elderly. As we age, the number of chronic medical problems we face tends to increase. There may be one or several conditions present at the same time. As the number of chronic medical conditions increases, so will the number of medications required to treat them. At the same time the body's ability to handle medications decreases with age. A further complication is that medicines may interact in ways that compromise their effectiveness. Geriatric training emphasizes the risks and potential for adverse reactions associated with the use of the multiple medications specific to the elderly. With each new patient I see, we review the medical history and, after a full physical exam, we consider how best to proceed.

The difference between a general internist and a geriatrician is the additional care taken with the investigation of cognitive function, gait and balance disorder, as well as the psychological and social problems that often arise in the elderly population. Care is taken to involve the family, as well as the patient, in all discussions. The stronger the support system, and the better all are informed, the better the outcome. The goal is to help each patient maintain a safe and healthy independence.

Dr. Stern serves as the Medical Director of ONEgeneration's Adult Day Healthcare Program. He reviews participant care plans and makes recommendations for enhanced care. If you have ideas for future article topics please contact ONEgeneration. Dr. Stern is available as needed for consultation on medical concerns.
Volunteer Spotlight -
Tamara Gold & Lily Rosenberg
When local artist Tamara Gold and her lovely daughter Lily Rosenberg were asked to help with mural for the Senior Enrichment Centers new Recognition Tree, they not only accepted but were enthusiastic about the project. These talented volunteers have been long time supporters through the National Charity League, San Fernando Valley Chapter helping at our Encino Farmers Market on Sundays and assisting at ONEgeneration events and fundraisers.

Donating their time over a few weekends they created a custom design to match our project goal and the wall space provided.
The end result is a colorful and lively mural in the Senior Center lobby for all to enjoy.  Stop by to see their creative creation and make a tribute for someone special to see their name recognized on the tree.

Thank you Tamara and Lily for your ongoing support, passion for others and lending us your wonderful artistic talents that will be a part of our program for years to come.

Be Fit While You Sit
Tuesday and Friday
1:00 - 2:00 PM

This class, an Arthritis Foundation Exercise, involves exercising while - you guessed it - sitting. Pat, who is certified by the Arthritis Foundation, created the class and has led it for 10 years. "I started the class out of my own limitations," explains Pat, who suffers from severe arthritis herself. "I've had keen replacement, open heart surgery, lots of stuff like that."
The idea to do sitting down classes came from her own experience in physical therapy. She has since created a routine she leads her class through. And it is very popular - people arrive very early to claim their seat, though there are plenty of chairs to go around.
Pat starts the group out with an arm stretch, set to a song by Aretha Franklin. "Oh I love the music she plays," one student says to another. "Yes," comes the reply, "she plays the best music!" And indeed, throughout the hour of chair exercises you may hear James Brown, the beach Boys, and Marvin Gaye.
After some stretching Pat has everyone breathe in and then give a loud exhale "aaaaah!" They do that a few times and Pat laughs. "Are we all awake now?"

Child Care

Here at ONEgeneration we just had our NAEYC visit! Our daily goal is to strive for and maintain NAEYC standards. We also have spent tireless and endless hours documenting and organizing our programs to meet NAEYC criteria. To be more exact, each classroom has a portfolio with over 417 documentation of criteria that relates to the following standards:  teachers, teaching, assessment, relationships, curriculum, physical, environment, health, leadership, families and communities.

Nationwide, less than 9% of the preschools are NAEYC accredited. One of the reasons behind this low accreditation rate is the fact that many preschools do not meet the NAEYC standards which are much higher than state licensing standards.

An example of these higher standards are teacher qualifications. NAEYC requires teachers to have a minimum of an Associate of Arts Degree in Child Development, (the requirements change to a Bachelor's of Art Degree in Child Development by 2020) while the minimum requirement to become a teacher in the state of California is only 12 core child development units.

NAEYC also requires a 1:3 teacher to student ratio for the infants while the State of California only requires a 1:4 teacher to student. Starting at the age of two the teacher to student ratio for NAEYC approval is 1:6 while that for the State of California is 1:12. It is clear to see that the standards set by NAEYC set the stage for high quality care which every child needs and deserves and which is also our mission at ONEgeneration. We eagerly await the results of our NAEYC accreditation visit and will update you in our next newsletter!

Encino Farmers Market
Few fruits have garnered as much attention in the health research literature as grapes. Part of the reason may be their widespread presence in diets worldwide. With the exception of Antarctica, grapes are cultivated on all of the earth's continents, and researchers from many different countries have been especially interested in this food. But an even greater part of the reason involves the amazing nutrient composition of grapes themselves. Every year, it seems like the list of health-supportive grape nutrients grows longer, and it can be challenging just to keep up with the many phytonutrients provided by this popular food. It is not surprising that grapes have been shown to provide many of our body systems with predictable benefits. Areas of benefit in grape research include the cardiovascular system, respiratory system, immune system, inflammatory system, blood sugar regulating system, and nervous system.

On your next trip to the Encino Farmer's Market, please visit: Circle K Ranch for a fresh variety of these health giving gems. As a special summer treat, store them in the freezer and enjoy an ice cold bite of Natures Candy.
