OSEC class of the Month
Zumba
Wednesday  10:00 - 11:00
Zumba is a Latin-inspired series of fitness moves from many types of dances: meringue, samba, mambo, and more.  As the instructor Joanne says "it's a party dance, where you sweat it all out, and feel good!"
And indeed, you can feel the excitement in the air before the class even gets started as eager class members gather and Joanne sets up her music. Once the catchy, modern dance tune starts playing, Joanne starts warming everyone up and telling them to "bring your mind to the dance" in a effort to align mind-body coordination.
She guides them along to the music - "okay let's do it!" - and soon has everyone clapping, stretching and shaking to the beat. She demonstrates and they follow along as she starts with hands, then shoulders and arms, has them reach up, stand on their toes and swivel their hips.
Joanne leads from the front, but also weaves her way among the group, giving encouragement. "You can do free form," she tells them. "You don't have to start on the same foot as me, just stay in rhythm and keep dancing!"
Soon everyone is working up a sweat and it is time for a short water break. There are actually multiple water breaks throughout this relatively short class.
"That's because everybody is moving, working up a sweat," Joanne explains.  "Hydrate!" she calls out to the class. "And smile!"
And smile they do.  Everyone is having a great time. "Isn't it amazing?" a dancer asks. "I'm 78!"  The students seem to love Joanne. "She's the best I ever saw," says one.

"How Honor Technology is Improving Home Care"
Steve Seigel,  Honor LA General Manager

Smartphone applications can help match a client's needs with the a nearby care professional with specialized training.  Home care technology, like the applications Honor's engineers are developing can also simplify scheduling, payment, and communication between the caregiver and family members who are managing care for their loved ones.  Mobile apps also make it easier for care professionals helping the same client to share information. Tech-enabled companies can track performance and even monitor fraud.

It's still important to have in-person assessments and the ability to pick up a phone and call a care coordinator. But the right amount of technology applied to delivering home care does save money which is invested back into improving the lives of the care professional. Employment with benefits, stability, and ability to grow is important to this work force.  And at Honor, we have seen how technology plays a key part in improving their lives as they play such an important role in caring for our loved ones.

If you'd like to see how Honor home care technology can help you, call 877-777-5116.

ONEgeneration's Adult Daycare Partners with UCLA

In April 2016, ONEgeneration's Adult Daycare became a partner with UCLA's Alzheimer's and Dementia Care Program. Care Managers from UCLA's program are now able to provide vouchers to families in need of our Adult Daycare services. This allows access to the program to individuals who might otherwise be unaware of the service or unable to afford the cost. Participation in the Adult Daycare program provides respite to the caregivers and cognitive stimulation, socialization, exercise, nursing monitoring, participation in intergenerational programming and much more to the individual diagnosed with Dementia. Participating caregivers also have access to the center's Caregiver Support Group. ONEgeneration is excited about this new partnership and looks forward to working with UCLA and these new families!
Congratulations to Mary Torres for being honored by the Los Angeles County Commission for Older Adults with the Older Americans Recognition Day Award! Thank you Mary for being such a wonderful volunteer and advocate for ONEgeneration!!
