OSEC class of the Month
Oil Painting
Tuesday 9:00-11:30 am
This course has been taught by Tamara for 2 years and is open to any and all, from absolute beginner to expert painter. Tamara, an award-winning painter and graphic artist originally from the Ukraine, takes an individual approach with each student. "Some are beginning, some have experience - everyone needs help, just at different levels," says Tamara.
Tamara goes on to explain that she teaches not just painting - painting is only part of art - she also gives instruction in anatomy, composition and other associated topics, like linear perspective, for example. "This class is important for everyone. It gives them a chance to say something about themselves - it is a beautiful way to show who you are."
Tamara is especially helpful to beginners and encourages everyone to come and try oil painting, no matter what your level of experience. She gives advice on supplies and where to get what you need and how to get started. She will tell you about the primary colors, complementary colors, and color value and texture.  She says it is not scary, it is something everyone should know!
Tamara is careful to point out that, though it is very important for a painter to feel their work is appreciated, no one in class will judge you or your work:  the important thing is to express yourself. You will increase your skills, enjoy it more, and then get even better!
The class members put on exhibitions and have even sold some paintings. And they love the class and Tamara: "She is a great teacher," says one student. "Oh yes, very helpful and patient!" says another. A third sums it up: "This is a great class!"
So come on down, Tamara will help you get started. Express yourself!
Volunteer Spotlight
Norman

"I'm a friendly person," says Norman. "I've been to several senior centers to see what they have to offer an to meet people, and I like this one." He is referring to the ONEgeneration Senior Enrichment Center (OSEC).  "I like the people, I like the volunteers, and I like that it is only one bus ride away for me."
Norman particularly appreciates how OSEC allows all volunteers, even those with some form of disability, to interact with the seniors. He says not all centers do that and he feels that is how OSEC stands out.
Norman comes to the Center three or four times a week. He likes the lunch, but he doesn't show up just to eat - he says he wants to engage with others and explore what is happening in the world. He likes to try and get other people to open up.
Norman has a colorful past. He was in the Actor's Guild for 20 years, he was in real estate for 30 years, he was even a hairdresser to the stars. "I've done more things than most people," says Norman. "I've traveled the world, yes, but I've done unusual things - I'm a certified hypnotherapist, for example! I could write a book."
In fact that's just what Norman is doing - writing about his history. "Everyone has a story within them to tell. Each one of us has something to offer. That's part of the reason I like talking to people."
Adult Day Care
Music and Memory

ONEgeneration's Adult Daycare will be initiating a Music & Memory music program this summer.  Music & Memory is a program that has been tested and proven in long-term care facilities throughout the United States and Canada.  The personalized music system has provided therapeutic benefits for thousands of individuals. Identified benefits include:
  • Giving pleasure to participants with dementia;
  • Increased cooperation and attention, reduction in resistance to care;
  • Reduction in agitation and sundowning; and
  • Improved engagement and socialization, fostering a calmer social environment
The program involves the development of personalized playlists based on the individual music preferences of program participants. Participants are given iPods to use while at the center to listen to the music they enjoy and that speaks to them.
To get the program off the ground, we are asking for donations of new or used iPods or MP3 players. These can be players that you have sitting around at home that are no longer being used.
For more information on the program, please visit the Music & Memory website at www.musicandmemory.org. Thank you for your support!
Childcare

ONEgeneration celebrated the Week of the Young Child which is an annual celebration created by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) celebrating early learning, young children, their teachers and families. We did a variety of fun activities to celebrate including a carnival, petting zoo, scavenger Hunt, Crazy Hair Day and Pajama Day!

Encino Farmers Market

"So, do you come here often?" may be a line we've all heard at some time in our life, but really, do you come to the farmers market often?  If so, you'll find that most of our vendors aren't about the quick sale but are eager to build relationships with their customers that translate into getting the best buys of produce and food products that you will be eager to take home to your family.
The recent hot weather has caused an excess of berries, especially strawberries that are coming to the market a lot sweeter than usual for this time of year.  I would like to give a shout out to Jose who you will find in the food court every Sunday producing some of the best roasted peanuts you will ever taste!
Don't forget to stop by our crafters corner where you can pick up a little trinket or handmade gift for a special birthday, Mother's Day or an anniversary.
Have a beautiful day at our farmers market.  We'll be looking out for you.
ONEgeneration Volunteers
ONEgeneration is fortunate to have the assistance and partnership of local companies and organizations.  This month we were joined by a team of volunteers from Life Care Assurance who hosted games and activities in a field day for our seniors and children.  It was a beautiful day out for both populations to come together in arts & crafts, bean bag toss, badminton, the popular face painting and more.  Without the support of these friendly volunteers we would not have been able to have such a wonderful Intergenerational day.
If you haven't stopped by our Senior Enrichment Center lately, you may not know about all of the improvements being made to this facility.  Over a weekend in April, volunteers from the San Fernando Valley Chapter of the Asian Real Estate Association.  This hard working group spent a Sunday taping, painting and cleaning.  The work of these generous volunteers will add to the many new efforts to improve the look and functionality of the Center.
