What's in a kitchen?
For 25 years, the FPC kitchen has been the scene of many a meal preparation and many a celebratory reception. It has housed the aromas of many a Wednesday supper and has welcomed many a youth into its midst for Sunday evening gatherings that are now part and parcel of the church experience here. Like a dependable best friend, it has served us well. But over time, it has become less and less efficient as the congregation has grown larger around it. What was once a kitchen that ably met our needs is now a space in need of modernization for a new day and a new set of hungry (spiritually and physically!) seekers.
In the coming weeks, your Session will evaluate plans submitted to it for a complete renovation of our kitchen as part of the ongoing capital funds program, which concludes in 2015. While vastly increasing the size of the existing kitchen footprint would be ideal, inherent space limitations remain, but maximizing the efficiency of that space can still be accomplished. To that end, your leaders will be assessing options and moving forward on a plan to make our ability to prepare and serve food at church far more functional.
On Sunday, May 5, you're invited to an informal gathering of interested members to share your dreams for what a new kitchen should contain and how it should be designed. We'll gather at 10:00 am in Fellowship Hall along with members of the Session to hear your ideas and requests.
While we can't do everything that everyone wants, we can try our best to produce a new kitchen that will meet the needs of the most people for years to come. I hope you'll join us.
Peace,

Learning to Take Care of Ourselves
"So...what kind of conference was this? I've just been thinking you were at a spa or something." That's what my child asked when he picked me up at the Memphis airport after the CREDO conference last month. I quickly assured him that going away to spend a week with total strangers (ministers, at that) was not my idea of a spa experience. However, it was restful and renewing, informative and challenging, and despite the fact that I was sad to leave my new friends, I was glad to get back home.
I am very grateful for your prayers while I was away at the Presbyterian CREDO conference at Lake Logan Conference Center in Canton, North Carolina. I hope you felt my prayers for all of you as our church family celebrated the lives of Dot Hayward and Linda Partridge and confirmed our newest members. As much as I wanted to be with you, I knew from the very beginning that I was right where I needed to be.
Presbyterian CREDO is an opportunity for pastors serving congregations to imagine, and realize, new possibilities for growth and change in key areas of their lives - spiritual, vocational, health and financial. When I've attended other conferences with ministers, the conversation tended to center around the churches they served; the latest thing they were doing to attract new members; new curriculum they had tried; programs and problems within the church. CREDO was different. Ministers shared that they sometimes felt more like program directors than spiritual leaders; that tending to the business of the church was stressful on their family life and often made them feel disconnected to family, friends, even God; that sometimes it was hard to remember why they had felt called to ministry in the first place; and that they weren't doing a very good job of maintaining their own spiritual life which made it harder to hear what God was calling them or their congregations to become.
People in caring professions often forget to take care of themselves. I'm sure that's true in many professions. CREDO reminded me what it feels like to take care of myself. Early morning walks, participation in worship, eating healthy food, spending time in prayer, finding support within a new network of friends, time off and listening for God were all part of the week. Maintaining balance is essential for all of us to have healthy and productive lives, but sometimes even the pastor forgets.
This scripture passage from our closing worship summed the week up very well:
"Be assured that from the first day we heard of you, we haven't stopped praying for you, asking God to give you wise minds and spirits attuned to his will, and so acquire a thorough understanding of the ways in which God works. We pray that you'll live well for the Master, making him proud of you as you work hard in his orchard. As you learn more and more how God works, you will learn how to do your work. We pray that you'll have the strength to stick it out over the long haul - not the grim strength of gritting your teeth, but the glory-strength God gives. It is strength that endures the unendurable and spills over into joy, thanking the Father who makes us strong enough to take part in everything bright and beautiful that he has for us."
--Colossians 1:9-12
The Message
My prayer for all of us is that God will give us "wise minds and spirits attuned to his will...an understanding of the way God works...strength that endures the unendurable and spills over into joy."
Take care,

Congratulations, scouts!
