First Grade Teacher Hired for 2015-2016

The Conference of Teachers and Board of Directors are delighted to announce that Katherine Nickel-McNerney has accepted the position of class teacher for the first grade class starting in September 2015.

Katherine grew up in Connecticut and attended Wellesley College where she graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Affairs. She went on to receive her Master's degree in International Relations from the University of Denver in 1998, again with a focus on human rights.

Katherine came to The Hartsbrook School as a Cricket on the Hearth parent and became very interested in the philosophy underlying Waldorf education. When her children were ready to enter school, Katherine came to work as a kindergarten assistant at Hartsbrook for two years before deciding that her heart was in the elementary school. In pursuit of her teacher training, Katherine organized a Hartsbrook Foundation Studies cluster from 2011 - 2013 and she received her teaching certificate in Waldorf education from Antioch University in New England in 2014. Katherine lives in Shutesbury with her husband Tim, children Muir and Dorian, and stepdaughter Sophia.

In her spare time, Katherine is an avid outdoors enthusiast, having once been a Wilderness EMT. She loves to backpack, rock climb, ski and snowshoe and is also a horse back rider. Katherine also enjoys playing the violin and guitar.  Katherine's deep connections to the Hartsbrook community, as well as her enthusiasm, experience and dedication are wonderful assets that she brings to this class and to  our whole school community.

Welcome Katherine!

Scrip News ~ Hartsbrook Partners with Paul & Elizabeth's
We are happy and excited to announce that Paul & Elizabeth's Natural Foods Restaurant (or "everyone's favorite restaurant," as many of us like to call it) will take part in our Scrip Program. As of next week, we will be offering their gift cards in $25, $50 and $100 denominations for purchase at the Main Office. The Susticks are most generous, so that with every gift card purchase, The Hartsbrook School will be making 10% of that purchase.

Even though for many of you Paul & Elizabeth's Restaurant needs little or no introduction, for those who have not had the opportunity to visit and enjoy the food and the ambience of Paul & Elizabeth's, this restaurant is unique. It is a popular, natural foods restaurant, situated in Thorne's Market in Northampton. The restaurant is owned by Paul and Elizabeth Sustick, one of the Hartsbrook founding families, and it is run by one of their sons, Nate Sustick, a parent of Henry in our 1st grade and Norah in Song Sparrow.

We are grateful to the Sustick family for this generous gift card offer, and we are hoping you will help us take a full advantage of this wonderful opportunity to enjoy a great dining experience while raising Scrip funds for Hartsbrook.

News From the Grades

Seventh Grade Play ~ A Servant of Two Masters

A perfect antidote to the weightiness often felt by the burgeoning adolescent, A Servant of Two Master's, a comedy by Carlo Goldoni,  appealed to the hearts and minds of both 7th graders and audience alike!  Students encouraged, supported and cooperated with each other like never before. Sometimes I laughed so hard during rehearsal that I had tears in my eyes!  I hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did!

Celebrating Our Community

$15 - Purchase online till February 27, 2015

A cellist sees the light between Bach and a hard place when Stephen Katz appears in the world premier performance of ANGELS IN THE ENGINE ROOM.  When Katz's concert of Bach Suites and original compositions is commandeered by the force of his inner voices, he is compelled to reveal what's troubling him: how to let the spirit of Bach speak directly through him, and how to explain why his unorthodox physical practice with a juggling ball has made its way into the concert program!
