Foundation Stone Assembly

On Tuesday, October 21st, Hartsbrook celebrated the 26th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone for our campus. Grades 1 - 12, faculty and staff gathered in the lobby of Piening Hall and the soaring space was filled with song, verse, and a story from Arthur Zajonc, one of Hartsbrook's founders and a current member of the Board.

Mr. Zajonc told of the shining copper dodecahedron that was filled with the good wishes from everyone who was at the school in 1988 (the oldest class was Mr. Piening's 4th grade) and how it was carried from the Ben Smith campus to the school's new site and buried in the ground under what is now the center of the windrose in the lobby of Piening Hall.

He spoke of how he and Mr. Piening stood on either side of the hole into which the dodecahedron - this seed for our new campus - was lowered. He spoke of how good it is to start something new with another person and not just on your own - for two can accomplish so much more. He also told of how metals change over long periods of time: lead can become copper, copper can become silver, and silver can become gold. And so it is with our school - our good work together brings about growth, transformation, and beauty in us and in the world.

Among the heartfelt wishes enclosed in the dodecahedron was the Foundation Stone Verse, written by Ekkehard Piening especially for the occasion.  Mr. Piening was the founding class teacher at Hartsbrook in 1985. He brought twenty years of Waldorf teaching experience to our new little school, and led the faculty with tremendous anthroposophical insight in a most dynamic and inspiring way. He died of an illness at the age of forty-eight after leading his class through fourth grade.

The words of the Foundation Stone Verse hang in the lobby of Piening Hall for all to read; they are spoken by the faculty often. It is very much at the heart of Hartsbrook.

Who is Saint Martin?

From France comes the legend of Saint Martin who, as a young officer in the Roman army, passed under an archway in the city of Amiens and discovered a poor beggar huddled there. The man was nearly naked, shivering with cold, and had received no alms to assist him. On seeing him, the young Martin took his own cape from his shoulders, cut the garment in half, and covered the poor man to warm him.

Martin was devoted to all humankind regardless of their station in life. He was known for his gentleness, his unassuming nature, and his ability to bring warmth and light to those who were previously in darkness. On the evening of Martinmas, he is remembered in many French households with a festival of lanterns, carrying light through the darkness.

The Martinmas celebration is inspired by old customs honoring St. Martin. As the sun sets earlier and rises later, the world grows darker and the inner light of humankind wants to shine forth. Children and parents gather as the sun sets. Handmade lanterns, often decorated with stars, suns, and moons, are lit as a symbol for the children of their own individual light. Our walk into the cold, dark evening gives us an experience of caring and sharing as we move toward the darkness of winter

A Few Last GV Game Reports

10/24/14 JV Soccer Hartsbrook 1 / Four Rivers 6
Fear ran deep from the start of the game due to the massive size of the Four Rivers team, yet Hartsbrook did their best against this force! The team, lead by captain Sophia gave it their all in the first half, although they were down 3-0. The fury that normally sparks from Jonah's left foot was tamed by a rock solid Four Rivers defense. Issac's ferocity gave a lift to Hartsbrook's diehard fans, leading to an outstanding second half.  As Captain Sophia would say to her teammates  "its not about winning or losing its about having fun".

10/28 JV Soccer Hartsbrook 1 / Bement 3
It was a tough way to end an outstanding and exciting season for the Hartsbrook stars. Falling behind by an early strike two minutes into the game, Hartsbrook found themselves struggling to get an equalizer. The crafty and dazzling feet of the little magician "Lane", froze the legs of the Bement defenders and goalie when he calmly slotted it to the far corner. Joy came to the fighting Hartsbrook but only for a short while. After saving shot after shot, showing of his "Tim Howard" skills a slight and uncommon error from goalkeeper Talyn saw Bement regain the lead. Second half got off to a wonderful start with the Captain leading her troops out to battle being battered from all angles. Issac's determination and will power weren't giving up, but in the end it was too much.

I have to say I am very very proud of the team and how they played. This game was the best game they played all season!

Early Childhood

Thank you to Roger Latuner

At our Open House this past weekend, a father stood in one of our classrooms and said, with tears in his eyes, "This is so beautiful. It is healing just to stand here."

Although there are many, many things that make a Waldorf Early Childhood classroom "sing," surely at The Hartsbrook School one of the chief ones is Roger Latuner's carpentry with its distinctive beveled and flowing edges. Not only has he made the charming round tables and moon- and star-chairs in our classrooms, he has also made cubbies, shelves, and long boat-benches. These beautiful creations have held many children through the years.

And, because these masterpieces are rather like Roger's children, they seem to come with a life-time guarantee of personal care attached. If ever one needs repair or refinishing, Roger is there, a loving Papa with tools and eco-friendly finish in hand, and a friendly smile for us all.

The Early Childhood department would like to take this opportunity to thank Roger Latuner for his many years of generous service to our community. He is the husband of Cherrie Latuner, English teacher at Hartsbrook High, and father of Lucy, a Hartsbrook High alumna.

Meg Fisher for the Early Childhood Faculty

Thank you Martagon-Villamil Family

"I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,

And all I ask is a tall ship, and a star to steer her by,

And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,

And a grey mist on the sea's face and a grey dawn breaking."

"Sea-Fever" by John Masefield

Dear Martagon-Villamil Family,

Thank you for choosing to bring this ship of childhood to our shores. It is already hard to imagine our play yard without her!   She has a happy look to her out there, tilting into the off-valley winds, with already many a voyage under her belt.   Although she travels where adults cannot go, we sometimes overhear wild destinations: Africa, California, Chicago, Treasure Island and the Moon!

With so much gratitude,

The Early Childhood Faculty
