News From the Grades

Third Grade

Nicki Robb and 3rd Grade students planting corn
The third grade curriculum in a Waldorf school focuses on taking care of the earth and its inhabitants.

Agriculture, the beginning of all culture, is the focused application of humans' creative and will forces on the world. Through artistic and practical work informed by Rudolf Steiner's developmental picture of the human being, the children in the third grade are learning to gather these forces, both outside and inside themselves, to perform Tikkun Olam, Hebrew for "repairing the world."

The 3rd Grade offered bounty from their Three Sisters Garden; squash, pumpkins, gourds and corn, and placed in several categories at the Franklin County Fair.

Jeff Kalman, Third Grade Class Teacher

Fourth Grade

As part of a local geography block, the fourth grade is taking many field trips to hike the mountains and explore the towns of the Pioneer Valley.

On Wednesday, September 10th, the class hiked Mt. Sugarloaf.  From the top, they were able to see the Connecticut River flowing slowly south toward the Hartsbrook School.  We beheld a grand view of the Holyoke Range and the surrounding landscape. The students documented the trip by each creating a map of the terrain and writing about the experience in their journals.  We look forward to further explorations in the coming weeks.

Welcome Penelope!

Penelope and Saphira
Just after school had ended in June, a horse trailer rolled into campus delivering our new donkey, Penelope. Thanks to the generous donation from our recent 8th Grade class, a replacement for our beloved Francesca became a reality.

From the first minute that she descended the ramp, it was clear that she was no Frannie! Young, energetic, slim and dainty, she laid herself down and rolled with delight in the sand and gravel happy to be out of the trailer and checking out her new surroundings. Just a year and a half old, she is really a teenager, coming from a family of donkeys that ran free with a herd of cattle in upstate New York.

After a cautious welcome from her new family and friends, the goats, she has become the boss, as we had expected and hoped. She needs to learn some good social skills and manners and so Saphira, (9th Grade) will be working with her each day to train her. Using techniques that Saphira has learned through training a pony this summer and studying the work of Monty Roberts (The Horse Whisperer), she will guide her through her paces. More to come!

Hawks Eye View ~ Soccer Recaps!

9/9/14 - Boys Varsity Soccer 3 / Four Rivers 2

Boys Varsity began their 2014 campaign with an exciting win versus Four Rivers. Throughout the game, a steady defense supported a tireless attack. Conceding the tying goal with minutes to go, the squad pushed on, and Dante scored the winning goal with only seconds to go.

9/12/14 - Boys Varsity Soccer 5 / Dublin 3
Boys Varsity collected a well-deserved win versus rivals Dublin. Contributions came from all sides of the pitch. The attack won several corners, the defense made several stands, and Simon tallied the season's first hat trick.

Ben Purdon, Boys Varsity Coach

9/12/14 - Girls Varsity Soccer Hartsbrook 0 / Dublin 4
After a strong preseason, Hartsbrook opened with a hard fought match against Dublin School on foreign turf.  Our young team, many participating in their first season of competitive soccer, proved to have incredible ball control and maintained possession of the ball for most of the game.

Maggie Elmore, Girls Soccer Coach

An exhilarating romp through Goethe's theatrical masterpiece about heaven, hell and a battle for the soul of a man searching for truth, satisfaction and a Goddess. Full of love, sex, murder, magic, myth, war, waves and a devil out of his depths, it is astonishingly pertinent to our time and our struggles to confront evil and to be truly human.
