Holding Still
The Healthy Social Life is found
When in the mirror of each human soul
The whole community finds its reflection
And when in the community
The strength of each one is living
~ Rudolf Steiner

In recent weeks a good deal of my time has been spent engaged in conversations with members of our community who are suffering and in pain.  It may be parents with concerns about their child's relationships with other children.  Or faculty members struggling in their communication with colleagues.  Or students experiencing a sense of disconnect and isolation from their peers.  In all of these instances I, and the others around the table, are challenged to truly understand the feelings and experiences of someone else. This is perhaps the hardest work we do in our community, a place where human relationships are highly valued and inherently fragile.

I will be honest. I am troubled, and am wrestling with how it seems that emotions surge and patience wanes so quickly, my own included. The very values we strive to instill in our children - tolerance, compassion and forgiveness - are often the first we let go of in our own moments of discomfort and suffering.

Last evening I joined faculty and parents on the Three Cedars campus for a conversation titled, "The Healthy Social Life: Empathy, Sympathy and Antipathy in our Modern World."  We considered questions such as
  • How does experiencing our reflection through community help, hinder, or color our awakening to self-awareness?
  • What do we learn about ourselves through others?
  • What roles do we play for each other in this process, such as the Bully, the Victim, the Bystander, or the Ally?
It was a rich conversation that left me with more questions than answers...

Douglas Gerwin
Turning Education on Its Head
Tuesday, March 15, 7 pm, high school campus
Please join us for this free parent education event with Douglas Gerwin.

Recent neuro-scientific research shows that the brain behaves less like a "hard-wired" computer, and more like a dense forest in which pathways appear through repeated use and disappear through neglect. The implications for education of this paradigm shift are huge, especially since the cortical functions of children and young adults do not fully develop until they reach their early 20s.

In his ground-breaking talk, Douglas Gerwin, Ph.D., explores how Waldorf education helps children and adolescents unfold their powers of intelligence by means of a curriculum designed to nourish their developmental needs from preschool through the high school years.

Douglas Gerwin, Ph.D., is Director for Anthroposophy, including Chair of its Waldorf High School Teacher Education Program, and Co-director of the Research Institute for Waldorf Education. A Waldorf graduate himself, Dr. Gerwin has taught for more than twenty-five years at university and high school levels in subjects ranging from biology and history to German and music. He is editor of For the Love of Literature: A Celebration of Language and Imagination; Genesis of a Waldorf High School; The Andover Proceeding: Tapping the Wellsprings of Health in Adolescence; as well as author of various articles on adolescence and the Waldorf curriculum. He is also co-author the Survey of Waldorf Graduates, the first comprehensive look at how North American Waldorf graduates fare in college and beyond.
Board Spotlight
With the joining of Seattle Waldorf School and Three Cedars Waldorf School this January, the Boards of the two schools are also combined. All of the former Three Cedars Waldorf School trustees were invited to join the combined Seattle Waldorf School Board. Four Three Cedars trustees have chosen to continue serving on the expanded board, and we will be introducing them to you over time.
Thamis
Thamis Estevez-Mendez was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil. At age 6, she moved with her family to Pará, a state in the far north of Brazil, close to the Amazon Forest, where she lived for 5 years and experienced a pretty exotic childhood. Later she returned to Sao Paulo, where she studied Arts and Industrial Design and later received her B.A. in Social Communication, with an emphasis in Marketing and Advertising. In 1998 she moved to Paris, France where she studied French and European Civilization at Université Paris-Sorbonne and also Art History at the Louvre Museum School (Ecole du Louvre). During her time in Europe she became interested in gastronomy and wine and pursued professional wine studies with Wine and Spirit Education Trust of London, UK. Thamis worked in national and international companies for more than 10 years accumulating experience in retail, marketing, merchandising and business development. In 2005 she moved to Seattle with her husband where they found the right place to start their family. Waldorf education came pleasantly unplanned into their lives and became a valuable gift for their kids, in grade 4 and 2 at the Three Cedars campus.
Do You Know. . .
The journey of SWS began in the imagination of three people, led us to quite a few temporary homes, and was made possible through the labors of love by many.

Over the course of this school year, our 35th, we will be sharing with you some images, stories, and trivia questions to bring this journey alive for you.
. . .What Activity Is Shown Here?
The answer will be published in the next issue of the Connection.

The photo shows something that took place for many years in late November.

Answer to the last SWS history trivia question: The photo showed the dedication of the grade school building on 100th Street in 1989.

Gus the bus at Dicks
News From Gus The Bus
I made a stop at Dick's last week to pay respect to founder Dick Spady. Dick passed away a few weeks ago at the age of 92. Did you know that Dick's was dubbed America's "Most Life-Changing Burger Joint?" Low turnover. High satisfaction rate. Always giving back to the community. Great teamwork. Consistent, quality product. Making people happy. I would totally give Waldorf the title of "Most Life-Changing Education." Until then, I wonder if Mr. Tawney would help me convert to run on french fry grease? Honk! Beep! See you soon, Seattle Waldorf! Gus the bus

Bikes at HS
This year, seniors Mariah, Adam, and Leander are focusing on creating a bike fleet for our high school in Magnuson Park, which will make it possible for students to borrow a bike for either going to the gym, getting food, or even biking to and from school.

SWS families are invited to donate spare bikes in any condition, bike parts, or gear (locks, cables, etc.) that the students can restore and compile for the project. "After we fix them up, we are hoping to have approximately 25 bikes in good shape in our high school bike fleet. Thank you in advance for your donations!" If you have questions, please email Adam at ahess@seattlewaldorf.org.

Another project, spearheaded by Jori and Noah, is a collection of used iPod Nano or Shuffle devices for the elderly. If SWS families have old iPod Nanos or iPod Shuffles that are no longer in use, they would be greatly appreciated at retirement homes. Studies show that music makes people with Alzheimer's and dementia happier and helps them function better within their communities. All donations are accepted at the high school front desk. If you have any questions, please contact Jori at jwink@seattlewaldorf.org or Noah at nsimon@seattlewaldorf.org.

Daffodil - Outside Adventures
Often on our nature walks through the restoration garden the children find balls that have rolled down the hillside. Oh what excitement a big red ball brings! On Wednesday it was resting under a web of thorny branches. One after another, the children looked for ways to get the ball. Greta managed to make her way through the maze of branches and recover it.  She carried it proudly up the hill and then passed it to Jake to toss over the fence while everyone else watched with anticipation. What Are Our Community Members Up To?

Hannah "Maestra" Lemberg will be performing in Macbeth with the Recycled Shakespeare Company (Seattle's newest repertory theatre) in a fresh take on the classic play by William Shakespeare. Performances are February 4 through 20, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at the Harbor Church in Ballard. After winning a civil war, Macbeth is now the hero of Scotland. But after the witches prophesy his advancement, he takes fate into his own hands and murders his way to the top, transforming himself from a noble hero to a monster. This amazing play deals with many issues, including death, ambition, guilt and fate. Recommended for ages 13 and up. Find more information here >

SWS ED/Summer Program Coordinator, Annie Paladino will perform again with Akropolis Performance Lab: Ecce Faustus is a world premiere theatrical event inspired by Thomas Mann's novel Doctor Faustus and the extraordinary chromatic compositions of Renaissance prince, murderer, and madman Carlo Gesualdo (with 5-part a cappella masterpieces sung live by the cast). A new take on the Faust myth for our time, Ecce Faustus plumbs personal and archetypal associations to investigate the possibilities of sacrifice, salvation, damnation, and the unfathomable mystery of death. Look forward to an exquisite artistic experience governed less by narrative than by the rules of music and poetry. Appropriate for ages 13 and up. February 5-27 at Northminster Presbyterian Church (7706 25th Ave NW). Learn more >
