Sequestration would further reduce

Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) funding in Atlanta

As many of you know, Jerusalem House receives its primary Federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) Housing Opportunities for Peresons With AIDS (HOPWA) program.   Due to a reduction to the HOPWA formula grant to the City of Atlanta,

Jerusalem House will lose $1.2 Million over two years beginning July 1.

The cuts translate into a reduction of 30 homes.

The organization has been working to comply with this number since September, 2012, through attrition after homes become vacant in our Scattered Site programs. Unfortunately, a small number of residents will be displaced by these cuts.  Jerusalem House is focusing on helping these residents identify new housing options.

In addition, on March 1st, the Federal Government is scheduled to implement austerity measures called sequestration in the form of budget cuts totaling $1.2 Trillion over 10 years.  The cuts would be split evenly between defense and domestic discretionary spending if a funding deal is not implemented by this Friday.

The automatic budget cuts, or sequestration, will affect HOPWA grants beginning July 1. These cuts will further affect the residents of Jerusalem House.

You have been friends and supporters of Jerusalem House for many years. We ask that you please help our residents by contacting your Congressperson before Friday at (202) 224-3121 to let them know that you are against sequestration.  Thank you so much for your continued support.

Jerusalem House is Atlanta's oldest and largest provider of permanent supportive housing for homeless and low-income men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS.
