CodeRED: Sign Up for Emergency Alerts!
New System Will Help Us Reach You in an Emergency
The City of Kirkwood has implemented a new high-speed emergency notification system called CodeRED.  The new system will help us reach residents and business owners in the event of an emergency or a situation that needs your immediate attention.

This is a completely voluntary system.  That means that to receive notifications, residents and business owners must "opt in" and register for the system. To register, or "opt in," visit the CodeRed Website here.

At this time, typical emergencies associated with the system will be:  Boil water alert, earthquake, tornado, train derailment, foreign or domestic terrorist attack (bombing, shooter, etc.), flood, chemical spill, major road closure, other National Weather Service warnings (ice storm, major snow), and mass civil unrest or disturbance. These events may be related to other things such as major power outages, significant water main breaks, massive fires, or other issues, and the messages the City sends can provide additional information related to those occurrences. As time goes by, the City may modify or expand system use to encompass power outages, sewer tests by MSD, or other non-emergency but important notifications.

Helpful Information from our News Partners
News from MoDOT:  St. Louis Work Zones
Drivers should be aware of moving maintenance operations that could be happening around the St. Louis region. The varying temperatures mean crews could be pothole patching and sweeping one day and have the salt trucks and plows out the next.

For additional work zone information and real-time roadway weather conditions, go to http://traveler.modot.org/map. For real time traffic, visit www.gatewayguide.com. All work is weather permitting and may be shifted due to inclement weather.

Motorists should be aware of the following ongoing closures:
  • I-64, St. Louis County, auxiliary lane closed westbound from I-270 to Mason and Mason to Maryville Center Drive. In addition, the ramps from northbound and southbound I-270 to westbound have been shortened. Lane restrictions will continue until spring 2016.
  • Route 115, St. Louis County, one lane closed eastbound and westbound from North Hanley to Florissant Road, through early 2016. In addition, there will be no access from eastbound Natural Bridge to Florissant Road.

GAME PLAN FOR SUPER BOWL 50:  Are you drinking and driving? This is NOT the time for an option play!

The Super Bowl is America's most watched national sporting event. On Super Bowl 50, Sunday, February 7, there will be a lot of game day socializing that may include drinking. That's why the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety is urging football fans to call the play now: drinking OR driving. If you plan on drinking on Super Bowl Sunday, designate a sober driver to get you home safely.

There's an app for that!  The SaferRide mobile app is a simple way to get you home safely with just three easy buttons:  1) Get Taxi. 2) Call a Friend. 3) Where Am I?

Gardeners Dream of Spring...
As gardeners dream of beautiful flowers, gorgeous shrubs, and thriving veggies, there are some resources that can be tapped while we wait for spring.  KMOX radio (1120 am) airs a Saturday call-in (314-436-7900) gardening program from
8:00 to 10:00 a.m.  Mike Miller generally hosts the program and answers questions of all types regarding lawn, tree, shrub, and garden care. This is a free program.

The Missouri Botanical Garden has a number of resources on the Website, from their Plant Doctor call-in service to their plant finder service, at www.mobot.org.  Also available are soil tests.  Many services are free while the soil test does have a cost.

Seed and plant catalogs seem to be arriving by droves, so ideas are plentiful. The adult education department of St. Louis Community College also offers many gardening classes.  Class schedules are available online and at the Continuing Education building located on Couch Avenue across from Robinson School

The Kirkwood Garden Club writes a Gardening Tip for most editions of Happenings.  For more information about the club, check out their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org. New members and guests, both men and women, are welcome to attend their meetings and events. Meetings are typically held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at the Kirkwood Community Center.
The Finish Line...
I saw a recipe for nachos the other day, accompanied by a photo of a big plate of chips piled high with queso and black olives and other good things.  And I thought: Oh, yeah, that's what I'm making for the Superbowl game!!  My brother asked for jalapenos, and if my daughter were here, she'd be making us some excellent guacamole to go with. Of course, my taco meat will be made with ground turkey and I'll have lettuce and tomatoes too, but it's still gonna all be sitting on top of chips that were most likely fried. And that's okay.  It will be my "last meal" before we start our Biggest Loser contest here at work next week.

Yes, we are doing that again.

We're not competing with Webster this year, but we nevertheless have some serious competitors on staff.  So serious that this year we will have two winners - one woman and one man.  For some reason, women and men lose weight differently, and so our winners in the past have all been men.  Some of the women have worked pretty hard at it but men see it as a mountain to be conquered and all their competitive instincts kick in. Which has been a little frustrating for our female employees.  In addition, we're doing a secondary contest for the "moderate" losers, because we firmly believe it's healthy for most people to lose between one and three pounds per week.  Everyone who stays within those parameters will be eligible for a drawing for a small prize.  And then in six months, we'll have a six-month follow-up weigh-in for all who lost weight, and everyone who kept off the weight (within a few pounds) will also be entered into a drawing.

The City's Employee Wellness Program ("WOW - Working on Wellness") has kicked into high gear over the last year, but our focus has been primarily on the health and well-being of our employees. So losing a bunch of weight to win a monetary prize is fun, but our goal is really to help people get their "numbers" into a healthy range - their weight, their cholesterol, their glucose, all of it.  A lot of our programs over the past year have focused more on fitness than weight loss - encouraging staff to "Walk at Work" and to incorporate that "magical" number of exercise minutes (150) into their schedule every week.  Our Finance Department has done daily stretching sessions, and a few months ago they did a little "plank" challenge right there in the office.  (So if you walked in to buy trash bags, and everyone was on the floor, now you know why.)  Each year, we see more and more employees step up and participate. It is GREAT to see people become focused on their health.

And this is a great month to do a Biggest Loser contest because it is once again "Heart Health" month.  So if you see me out there tooling around downtown Kirkwood at lunch time in my sneakers and down coat (photo, right), you'll know why.

Happy Valentine's Day!  Happy Mardi Gras! Happy "Heart Health" Month!

See you on February 18.
Stay warm out there.
