Happy Halloween!

Photo of the Week: Pirates of the Public Services Department!

Pictured below (L to R): Lisa Boedy, Becky Barczewski, TaMara Pelkey, and Patti Dodel.

It's "Under the Sea" and "On the Sea"-themed week at Kirkwood City Hall, which mostly means we're all pirates!  The Public Services Department, which includes Engineering and the Building Commissioner's Office, on the lower level of City Hall is all decked out with under-the-sea themed Halloween decorations (get it - the lower level is "under the sea" while the main level is "on the sea"). And, of course, both levels have CANDY.  Please bring the kiddos by this afternoon between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. for some trick-or-treating before you head over to the Downtown Halloween Walk, which kicks off at 5:00 and runs until 7:00 p.m. Many downtown merchants are participating.  PLUS:

~ Kiwanis Club will offer free hotdogs at Ken Connor Park (northeast corner of Argonne Drive at Kirkwood Road). Donations appreciated.
~ Greentree Community Church will also host its annual Harvest Party from 5:00-8:00 p.m., with free hot dogs and candy at their new location: 100 Kirkwood Place.

Letters from Santa
Friends of the Library Will Host TWO Holiday Programs

SANTA LETTERS:  The Friends of the Kirkwood Public Library will once again host their annual "Letters from Santa" campaign. They will send a letter from Santa to all the kids, young and old, in your life.  Letters can be ordered and paid for online at: KirkwoodPublicLibrary.org/SantaLetter. Or forms are available at the Library.  For requests received by December 2, every effort will be made to have the letter postmarked at the North Pole.  All requests must be received by December 16.

CHILDREN'S HOLIDAY SHOPPING: On Saturday, November 21, the Friends will also host a special holiday shopping experience for children. Youngsters will be able to buy gifts for mom, dad, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, and friends at kid-friendly prices beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the Children's Room on the lower level of the library. The event will last until 2:00 p.m. or until the gifts are gone, so stop by early with the youngsters to let them get a head start on holiday shopping. This event is being held in conjunction with the Downtown Kirkwood Holiday Walk. The library is located at 140 East Jefferson Avenue in Kirkwood.

Last Nature Hike of the Season
This Saturday - Are Emmenegger Woods Haunted?

Many people have an innate fear of spiders, centipedes, snakes and other critters that call Emmenegger home. Do you really need to be afraid of them? Webster Groves Nature Study Society Vice-President Rich Thoma's nature hike is a chance to dispel fears and learn what these unique organisms actually do.

Saturday, October 31, 10:00 a.m.  Emmenegger Nature Park, 11991 Stoneywood Drive. Meet at the trailhead kiosk by the creek.  All programs are FREE, for all ages, and will be held rain or shine. Bring a camera and notebook if desired.
Gardening Tip
Trick or Treat!

Treat:  Shredded leaves are a great compost for your lawn and gardens.  Trick:  Whole leaves will mat down which can lead to fungus problems and rob roots of moisture.  Piles of leaves will kill off grass and plant material, harbor unwanted pests, and be unsightly.  Whole leaves will clog gutters and cause water backup.  They can also form a barrier on gutter guards.  Keep on raking.

Treat:  This week's rain.  Trick:  We are still dramatically below normal rainfall for October.  Keep up the watering until the ground freezes!

Treat: Uncarved pumpkins can last a very long time, which makes for great fall decorating.  Trick:  Carved pumpkins will deteriorate faster and turn mushy.  Discard pumpkins when they are past their prime.

Happy Halloween!

The Finish Line...
The Holidays...Already?  Really?

Greetings!  There's a lot of holiday news in this edition of Happenings, but I cannot lie.  I am feeling a little festive this year. You know how sometimes you don't "get" the holiday spirit until really late (or not at all)? Well, I think I kinda got mine early this year.  I have always loved Halloween and pretty much have always considered it the start of the season.

At our house, when the kids were little, they started planning their costumes in May, especially my creative daughter, who had something of a theatrical approach to this dress-up holiday.  One year she was Davy Jones (the Monkees' version, not the pirate). One year, after she had discovered "I Love Lucy," she went as Ricky Ricardo, carrying a guitar and greeting candy-givers with a "Lucy, you got some splainin' to do" trick. (You know who ended up carrying that guitar.) One year she was Calamity Jane, but not the fancy cowgirl kind ("That's Annie Oakley!" she said) but the grungy Buffalo Girl version. I was so worried nobody would get it, but the very first parent who greeted us shouted out: "It's Calamity Jane!"  (That parent was Lew Prince, formerly co-owner of Vintage Vinyl. He will always have a special place in my heart for what he did for my daughter. Some memories never fade.)

I'll bet you all have some great Halloween memories too.  And you get to make new ones this year.  It's always a good year when Halloween falls on a Friday or Saturday, and when the weather is dry.  This year we get our Saturday wish, but the weather is still debatable.  The Weather Channel (as of today) is predicting a high of 57 with periods of rain all day.

Another Weekend Item of Note:  The best headline in my email inbox today was this one from National Geographic:  "Daylight Saving Sale Ends Soon."  I think that's the most clever sales phrase I've heard in a long time.  So here's your reminder:  Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend - at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, November 1 ("fall back" an hour)...and the National Geographic sale ends then too (20 percent off!!).

Have a great weekend and a safe Halloween.  See you on November 12 (only one edition in November).
