Welcome to the October 1 edition of the City of Kirkwood's e-newsletter.

Photo of the Week:  The AIM Community Band performed in Connor Park the morning of the Greentree Parade. They kept parade goers entertained until the parade made its way to Downtown Kirkwood.  Thank you, AIM musicians!  Established in 1976 by Kirkwood residents Judy and Tom Roberts, the AIM Community Band features musicians that include Kirkwood High School alumni as well as community members. The group rehearses several times during the school year and traditionally performs a free spring concert. They also support the band and orchestra programs for the Kirkwood School District.  For more information on AIM or other arts and musical groups around Kirkwood, be sure to sign up to receive the monthly Arts Calendar. Gardening Tip
Don't Plant Those Bulbs Yet!

Hold off on planting spring blooming bulbs such as tulips and daffodils.  The ideal time to plant is after the ground has cooled, but before it has frozen.  Planting when the soil is too warm encourages the bulb to produce foliage which takes energy away from next spring's blooming.

Also wait for cooler soil temperatures before applying mulch.  The purpose of mulch is to keep the soil cold.  This prevents heaving of plants and bulbs as we go through the freeze/thaw cycles of winter.  Additionally the mulch will help delay early foliage production that becomes damaged when there is more freezing weather.  If the soil is dry, it is a good idea to water before applying mulch.

The Kirkwood Garden Club writes a Gardening Tip for most editions of Happenings.  For more information about the club, check out their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org. New members and guests, both men and women, are welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are typically held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at the Kirkwood Community Center.

Soulard Blues Band Tonight!

Greetings!  Cooler weather is here, so be sure to bring a sweater tonight if you plan to attend the FINAL summer concert of the year.  Soulard Blues Band will perform at 6:30 p.m., in Station Plaza, across the street from City Hall.  Enjoy!! (Tonight's concert is sponsored by Spencer's Grill, STL Real Estate, and One 19 North.)  THANK YOU to all this year's sponsors, musicians, and the audience for a great season!

In other news, THANK YOU to the citizens of Kirkwood for passing the 1/4-cent Fire/EMS Sales Tax in April. We are in the process of hiring seven new firefighter/paramedics. And don't forget - the sales tax became effective today, so you will notice a new sales tax rate of 8.613 on your purchases.
