Gardening Tip
If You Plan to Dig!

Before planting materials with significant root balls such as trees and larger shrubs, check the location of underground utilities.  Call Dig Rite 1-800-344-7843 or 811 at least three days before you dig.  This is a FREE service.  All utility lines on your property will be marked in the areas you plan to dig.  (The markers used are not permanent and won't damage any lawns or plants currently in place.)  This is also true for new garden spaces and areas that will be tilled.  It is wise to avoid planting trees around sewer lines.  Roots will seek out the moisture in the sewer and can, over time, crack the sewer pipes.  Gas lines tend to be shallow, especially for gas lights and BBQ grills, so take care if digging in those areas.  It is easier to be safe than sorry!

The Kirkwood Garden Club writes a Gardening Tip for most editions of Happenings.  For more information about the club, check out their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org. New members and guests, both men and women, are welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are typically held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at the Kirkwood Community Center.

The Finish Line...
Don't Rain on My Parade!

Watching the weather app...  It's true.  Beginning the week prior to the Greentree Festival, those of us City employees who work on the festival start watching the weather forecast every single day.  Just a couple of days ago, Weather.com was predicting rain on Friday. Yesterday, they were predicting clear skies on Friday but rain on Saturday.

Today:  VOILA!!  No rain is predicted all weekend - except overnight Friday night.

Of course that could change in a St. Louis Minute.

This year, City employees are particularly focused on the parade because one of our own - Police Officer Jim Cox - will be serving as this year's Parade Grand Marshal.  Jim is the City's Community Services Officer and one of the first people I worked with at the City. I will miss him greatly when he retires next year. He has been a member of the Greentree Festival Planning Committee for years, and if you are a regular parade watcher, you have seen him at the front of the parade on his motorcycle. This year he will be in a car (because he has to be able to wave!) The photo below is Jim at a meeting earlier this year.

I don't know about you, but I am looking forward to some fun music and food this weekend.  I hope to see you there!
