Meet Your Local Government
Community Day in Kirkwood!
Fillmore Park

The City of Kirkwood will hold a "Community Day at the Park" on June 13 at Fillmore Park, from 10:00 a.m. to Noon. This is the first event of its kind.   Residents are encouraged to attend and to meet their City staff and elected officials in a fun, informal morning gathering.

This is the first of several Community Day events the City will host for Kirkwood residents in neighborhood parks throughout the City.   These events will feature touch-a-truck exhibits with police and fire vehicles as well as booths staffed by representatives from all City departments - fire, police, electric, water, parks, Kirkwood Public Library, and others.

This is a great opportunity for residents to get to know their local government, ask questions, pick up some information, find out about volunteer opportunities, and learn more about the City's comprehensive planning initiative - EnVision2035.  Residents can take a look at the City's plans for the future and contribute ideas and thoughts to the planning process.

Fillmore Park is located on the corner of South Fillmore and E. Clinton Place, and it is equipped with playground equipment, so residents can bring their children.  Light refreshments will be served.

Future events will be held as follows, also from 10:00 a.m. to noon:

  • July 18, Avery Park, 225 Avery Drive
  • August 15, Ella & Charles Monfort Memorial Park, 2036 Briargate Lane
  • October 10, Meacham Memorial Park, 340 New York Street
Kirkwood Electric Recognized
Kirkwood Electric Receives RP3 Award for Third-Consecutive Period

Kirkwood Electric received its third RP3 award from the American Public Power Association in May.  The RP3 recognition (Reliable Public Power Provider) was given to only 191 public power utilities - out of a field of more than 2,000.  Kirkwood Electric also received this prestigious award in 2011 and 2013, when the award was given for a two-year period.  This year it was awarded for a three-year period.

The APPA designation recognizes utilities that provide consumers with the highest degree of reliable and safe electric service.  The recognized utilities have demonstrated proficiency in four key disciplines - reliability, safety, workforce development, and system improvement. Criteria within each category are based on sound business practices and represent a utility-wide commitment to safe and reliable delivery of electricity.

"We are honored to receive the RP3 designation," said Mark Petty, Director of Kirkwood Electric.  "Our utility staff put in a lot of hard work to serve the residents of Kirkwood.  The RP3 award represents a much-appreciated recognition of their hard work."

The APPA is the national organization representing more than 2,000 nonprofit, community-owned, and state-owned electric utilities.  This is the 10th year the RP3 recognition has been awarded.

News from MoDOT
Watch for Slow-Moving Trucks Painting Stripes on Missouri Highways

The Missouri Department of Transportation is working on its annual effort to paint fresh stripes on highways. Drivers should be prepared to slow down significantly when coming up behind a slow-moving caravan of MoDOT striping trucks. MoDOT restripes most of the major highways each year during late spring, early summer. The striping trucks move between 8 mph and 12 mph when workers are painting white and yellow lines on highways. A driver traveling at highway speed can approach a slow-moving striping caravan much quicker than he or she expects because of significant differences in speed.

For example, where the speed limit is 70 mph on interstate highways, cars are covering at least 103 feet per second. If not paying close enough attention approaching the last truck in a striping caravan, a driver suddenly may have to brake and swerve to avoid a high speed, rear-end crash, which can be extremely serious.  The yellow MoDOT trucks have flashing strobe lights and boards with flashing arrows and messages.

Two-Week Closure of Lindbergh Over BNSF Railroad in South County

MoDOT and its contractor, Concrete Strategies Inc, have set the date for a two-week closure of Lindbergh Boulevard near I-55 in south St. Louis County.  Starting Monday, June 15, crews will close the section of Lindbergh over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad between Rusty Road/Lindbergh Business Court and East Concord Road. During the closure, crews will be removing the driving surface, repairing the concrete under that surface and then placing a new driving surface.

Drivers should use I-55, I-270 and Route 21 (Tesson Ferry) to detour around the closure.  Because of the closure, work is expected to continue around the clock on the bridge.  Residents and business owners should expect noise at all hours when construction begins.  The road is expected to be reopened by Monday, June 29.

Gardening Tip
Time to Trim, Move, and Fertilize!

Now that the spring blooming trees, bushes, and flowers have done their thing, it is time to trim, move, and fertilize.  If trees and bushes need trimming, do so this month before they begin to set buds for next year.  Never trim more than 20 to 25 percent in a season.  If moving is on the agenda, prepare the new location before digging up the root ball.  Start digging at the farthest point from the trunk of a tree or bush.  The farthest point is defined by the tip of the branches.  This can make the root ball very large and very heavy.  Replant with 20 percent of the root ball above the surface of the soil.

Fertilize using a product specifically for the plants you have.  Azaleas and dogwoods prefer acidic soils, but not so for other plants. If you want to move or remove spring bulbs, simply dig them up, remove the loose soil, and allow to dry.  Once they are dry they may be stored in a cool dark location and replanted in the fall. We are currently behind in rainfall, so remember to keep things watered.

The Kirkwood Garden Club writes a Gardening Tip for most editions of Happenings.  For more information about the club, check out their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org. New members and guests, both men and women, are welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are typically held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at the Kirkwood Community Center.

The Finish Line...
Father's Day and...Men's Health Month!

Greetings!  This is our first edition in almost a month, and it's not coming too soon because there's a lot going on in Kirkwood!

First of all, a word about Men's Health Month.
I have the very good fortune to be blessed with two wonderful brothers (photo of us below from last Thanksgiving).  They share a lot of the same qualities and characteristics.  They're both funny, they both wear shorts year-round (I can't explain it), and they both love to cook. But they are also different in one crucial way:  One tends to be a bit of a hypochondriac, while the other one lets health issues go until they become a crisis.  The hypochondriac grew up with asthma and a few years back he battled leukemia, so he has good reason to be cautious.  Today he is in remission, but even so, things most of us wouldn't bat an eye over he has to take seriously.  Tomorrow, in fact, he is scheduled for a biopsy on some funny looking spots in his mouth.  The other brother started having serious vision problems in one eye a few years back (due to high blood pressure) and ignored it. By the time he saw a doctor, it was too late.  He is now blind in that eye.  He is unfortunately the more typical brother.

According to the National Institutes of Health, compared to women, men are more likely to drink alcohol, make unhealthy or risky choices, and put off regular check-ups and medical care.  (Here's a link for some further reading on this topic.)  So, you men out there, even though we know you hate it, please, please don't let health issues go until you're in the danger zone. Don't be like my other brother. In recognition of Men's Health Month, in honor of Father's Day, and for the people you love, see your doc.

And:  HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!

Be sure and check out all the cool stuff going on in Kirkwood in the articles above.  See you in two weeks!
