WORK SESSION ADDED
CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION ADDED IN JANUARY
The Kirkwood City Council has added a work session to its schedule on January 29.  The meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m., in the main-level conference room at City Hall, 139 S. Kirkwood Road.  An agenda will be posted on the Website calendar early next week.
WALKER LAKE UPDATE
WALKER LAKE PHASE 4 CONSTRUCTION BEGAN THIS WEEK

The construction of the Walker Lake Phase 4 project in Kirkwood Park kicked off on Monday, January 19.  The contractor for the project, Two Alpha, hit the ground running, taking advantage of the unseasonably warm and dry weather conditions.  Already, Two Alpha has started tearing out the walls of the concrete channel, or swale, that leads from Geyer Road to Walker Lake.  Materials are on site, including the ledge rock that will form the new channel walls.  The park staff has been actively involved in the project:  Setting up tree protection fencing and temporarily striping the central entrance (between the pool and Reim Theatre) into the Community Center parking lot.  This is the temporary entrance to the parking lot.  The temporary striping will allow for two-way traffic in this area to compensate for the closure of the north drive during the duration of the project.  The project is expected to last 100 to 120 days, unless there are weather-related delays.

COMMUNITY CENTER PUBLIC INPUT SESSION
PUBLIC INVITED TO GIVE COMMENTS ON COMMUNITY CENTER

As a portion of the existing Kirkwood Community Center approaches its 50th birthday, a feasibility study is being conducted to examine the future of the building.  A statistically valid survey completed earlier this year has given direction to the feasibility study, which is being conducted by Jacobs Engineering.  As part of the feasibility study process, the public is being invited to review and comment on some very preliminary design ideas and conceptual plans.  This opportunity will take place during two public comments sessions.  The first will be held Wednesday, January 21, from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. and the second will be held Saturday, January 24 from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  Both sessions will be held at the Kirkwood Community Center, 111 S. Geyer Road.

ART LOVERS NEEDED
ARTS COMMISSION SEEKS PEOPLE WHO LOVE ART
The Kirkwood Arts Commission is looking for people who love art and would like to be involved in arts-related activities in Kirkwood. We have three specific needs currently:

1) Most immediately, we need help with Art at the Station. This involves approximately two to three hours per month, and we would love to have two to three volunteers who could help with hanging art work at the historic Kirkwood Train Station and/or help with setting up and hosting the artist receptions on the first Thursday of the month.

2) Over the summer months, we need help with the "Making Music" summer concert series in Kirkwood Park. This would involve three to four volunteers working for a couple of hours as ushers at each concert. We host two concerts in June, two in July, and two in August - on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays.

3) Finally, we also need volunteers to serve on a sub-committee involved in developing a public art program for the City. This is a longer kind of commitment, and we need three to four individuals who can spend three to four hours per month on this project. An initial meeting to organize will be scheduled between late February and the middle of March.

If you are interested and available, or would like to know more, please send an email to Arts@KirkwoodMO.org, or call 314-822-5894. Thank you.

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK!
OAK GALLS IN THE GARDEN

As oak leaves continue to fall, you may see growths on the tree limbs and branches. These  are probably oak galls.  The size can range from peanut size to that of a grapefruit, or larger (see pictures).  Ugly as these may be, they are not a threat to the life of the tree  unless there are so many the weight of the galls causes the branch or limb to crack and break.  There is no cure or preventative treatment to deal with oak galls.  My best advice is to ignore them and wait for new leaves to hide them.

NEXT MEETING:   Everyone is invited to attend a program by Dave Gunn from the Missouri Botanical Garden on Tuesday, February 3, at the Kirkwood Community

Center, 111 S. Geyer Road.  Dave is an  expert on roses and will discuss those at the gardens as well as types we may have or want for our yards.  The meeting begins at 7 p.m.

The Kirkwood Garden Club periodically shares a Gardening Tip of the Week with Happenings' readers.  For more information about the Club, visit their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org.  New members and guests, both men and women, are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
The Squirrels Ate My Wiring!  Well, not MY wiring, but my former boss's wiring.  Mike
Mike's Defense
Brown, retired Kirkwood Chief Administrative Officer, sent me a note this week about the squirrels in his neighborhood chewing the wiring under the hood of his car and destroying it.  Mike's car was damaged to the tune of more than $500 in repairs.  He is wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions for successfully keeping squirrels out of a car's engine area (when parked outside)?  Send me your stories and suggestions and I'll share them here in the next edition.  And lest you think we jest, here's a whole Website devoted to this topic (literally: SquirrelsAteMyWiring.com.

Maybe the squirrels are just trying to stay warm.  That hasn't been a significant issue this week, due to the nice temps in the 40s, but it is extremely likely that intense winter weather will return at some point before spring arrives. So stay warm out there. I'll see you in two weeks.  (My proofreader is out of the office today, so please excuse any typos!)
