PHOTO OF THE WEEK:  Pickleball!
Are you in need of an indoor physical work-out on these cold days of winter?  Come on over to the Community Center, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., for some drop-in Pickleball.  Staff will walk you through the rules. Played with paddles and a light-weight ball, pickleball is a cross between badminton, tennis, and ping pong, and it's a great way to shed some calories and have some fun when it's waaaaaay too cold to be outside. The drop-in fee is $2.00 for residents and $3.00 for nonresidents. You do not have to register in advance.  Kirkwood also has an outdoor pickleball court (for when it's warmer) behind the handball courts in the courts complex off West Adams Avenue.  It is the only permanent pickleball court in St. Louis County.

ONLINE SYSTEMS DOWN THIS WEEKEND
ONLINE UTILITY PAYMENTS WILL BE UNAVAILABLE THIS WEEKEND
The City's MIS team will be migrating to a new AS/400 this weekend. The work will start at about 5:30 p.m., on Friday (Jan. 9) and continue through Sunday (Jan. 11). This means several of our online programs will not be available, including utility payments, building permits, and the Citizen Action Center.  If you cannot access these systems this weekend, please try again Monday morning. We apologize for the inconvenience.
"BOIL WATER" ADVISORY:  UPDATE
UPDATE ON THE BOIL-WATER ADVISORY:
Thank you to all our Kirkwood residents who called with or posted questions and comments about last week's "boil water" advisory. We apologize for any confusion over this situation. We can do a better job notifying customers and the community. This was the first time in more than 20 years that Kirkwood Water has had a possible water contamination situation, but we do see this as a learning moment and plan to improve our communication process for the future.

We learned late on January 1 that there was a possible water contamination situation, due to a Missouri American Water broken water main. Very few Kirkwood Water customers were potentially affected, but once we learned of the situation, we expanded the precautionary advisory area just to be safe. The water was immediately tested as a precaution. It takes 24 hours for the test results to come back, so we learned late on Friday night, January 2, that no water had been contaminated. We greatly appreciate the response from the community and the sharing of information on social media by residents. Please send any additional comments or questions to Info@KirkwoodMO.org. Thank you.

In the event of bad weather - storms, severe ice, heavy snow - the event will be rescheduled for January 31, 2015.

COMMUNITY CENTER FEASIBILITY STUDY
OPTIONS FOR THE COMMUNITY CENTER TO BE CONSIDERED: PUBLIC INVITED TO GIVE COMMENTS

As a portion of the existing Kirkwood Community Center approaches its 50th birthday, a feasibility study is being conducted to examine the future of the building.  A statistically valid survey completed earlier this year has given direction to the feasibility study, which is being conducted by Jacobs Engineering.  As part of the feasibility study process, the public is being invited to review and comment on some very preliminary design ideas and conceptual plans.  This opportunity will take place during two public comments sessions.  The first will be held Wednesday, January 21, from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. and the second will be held Saturday, January 24 from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  Both sessions will be held at the Kirkwood Community Center, 111 S. Geyer Road.

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK!
TO WATER OR NOT TO WATER?

The answer to that question is yes and no. House plants need less water and little-to-no fertilizer at this time of year.  More damage to house plants is caused by over-watering than under-watering. When watering, get the soil damp, not soggy.  Perennials, shrubs, and trees, especially if they are newly planted, need water during the winter. If the weather has been dry and/or windy, provide some water on days when the temperature is above 32 degrees.

The Kirkwood Garden Club periodically shares a Gardening Tip of the Week with Happenings' readers.  For more information about the Club, visit their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org.  New members and guests, both men and women, are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
A Week to Think and to Mourn... Just last week, family members and I visited the
The museum was actually built around the slurry wall (left) and this steel
totem as well as excavation areas
that were left in place.
National September 11 Memorial and Museum in lower Manhattan (photo right).  We spent four hours exploring the museum, which opened earlier this year.  The crowds are still fairly heavy, and you need to purchase your tickets in advance if possible, but the exhibits, powerful and moving, are worth it.  Then on the heels of that, came the sorrowful news from France about yet another terrorist attack.  It's not the best way to start a new year, but I am reminded of the strength and resilience of the American people when I look at the photos I took of the Museum.  Today, of course, our thoughts and prayers are with the French.

On a lighter note, I'd like to share a couple of items from our readers.

Fireworks Video:  Tripp Frohlichstein, long-time Kirkwood resident and former KMOV staffer, has produced a short documentary-like video on the 2014 Winter Fireworks.  It is posted in two parts on the City Facebook page, here (scroll down a bit):  https://www.facebook.com/CityOfKirkwoodMo. Tripp also produced a one-minute speeded-up video of the entire fireworks, with music.  It's also on our Facebook page.

Be Careful Walking at Night:  One of our other loyal readers, Patty Brennan, sent in a suggestion for other readers. If you walk or run after dark, please do not wear all black.  Or if you do wear black, invest in a reflective vest or arm band.  This goes for dog walkers too.  Even if you stick to the sidewalks, you will probably at some point need to cross a street, and that's when a driver may have trouble seeing you if you're dressed in all black. We can add a few other tips to this:  Plan your route and let someone know where you will be walking. Carry identification.  Don't carry money or wear jewelry. Do carry a cell phone.  Happy Walking!

Stay warm out there. I'll see you on the 22nd!
