EVERYBODY LOVES A TRAIN
AMTRAK PARKING INFORMATION FOR KIRKWOOD PASSENGERS
The City often receives phone calls about parking from passengers planning to catch an Amtrak train in Kirkwood.  If you are planning to travel by train in the near future, we hope you find the following helpful:
  • Parking for Amtrak passengers in Downtown Kirkwood is free.
  • There is a designated Amtrak lot just to the north of Bar Louie's on Kirkwood Road in Station Plaza, but overflow parking may be available in the Station Plaza parking garage and elsewhere.
  • Passengers will need to obtain and display a Parking Pass to take advantage of the free parking during their trip. You may obtain the parking pass at the Kirkwood Train Station when it is open for passengers (typically, an hour before trains arrive).
  • Passengers should arrive 30 to 45 minutes before their train is scheduled to leave, to have enough time to obtain the parking pass, park, and walk back to the station. If passengers can obtain their parking pass a day or two earlier, that is preferable.
  • Handicap parking spaces are available close to the Train Station.
  • For additional questions about parking, please call the Train Station Manager, Bill Burckhalter, at 314-792-4125.
  • For Amtrak route or ticket information, call 1-800-872-7245.

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK!
SALT AND PLANTS DON'T MIX!

Take care using salt in slippery or snowy weather.  While it helps with traction, if can kill or damage your lawn and gardens.  As salt dissolves, it will run off your sidewalk or driveway.  Other options are ice-melting products without salt, kitty litter, and sand.  Should salt get in areas that could be damaged, flush it with water as soon as possible.  This is especially important for plants around mailboxes that get hit with road salt.

The Kirkwood Garden Club periodically shares a Gardening Tip of the Week with Happenings' readers.  For more information about the Club, visit their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org.  New members and guests, both men and women, are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
Baby, we were born to run................
According to an article I read last year, one of the reasons our human brains have evolved to be so big and smart is our ability to run. Sounds crazy, huh?  You may have read about the annual race in Wales pitting man and horse in a marathon running contest, and the man won?  We may not run as fast as horses, but we can run for longer periods and therefore longer distances.  In fact, we were made to run.  Animals, including cheetahs and other fast-moving mammals, can out-sprint us easily, but they give out pretty quickly. This is due to our human design: Our joints, the length of our muscles, and our ability to sweat. We are built for endurance and heat tolerance.  These characteristics developed at a time when humans had not yet developed great tools for hunting, so our ancestors often outran their prey ("persistence hunting") or outran scavengers.  Those early humans, therefore, enjoyed protein-rich diets, which led to the development of...big brains.

I was thinking about this last night as I rounded the last few laps of my three-mile run on the elevated track at my gym.  As long-time readers of the newsletter know, I used to be a regular runner, usually managing three to four miles, three to four days a week.  Then a couple of years ago, I suffered through a particularly painful case of knee tendonitis, and I gave up on running because I could no longer do it outside without risking a recurrence.  I switched to walking and aerobics classes, but I was inconsistent at best. Then, a little more than two months ago, 44 Kirkwood employees embarked on a Fitness Challenge, which culminated in our exercising for 150 minutes a week by the end of the 8-week challenge. We had a little celebration yesterday for those who finished the challenge (I did it!) and I found myself talking to two of my colleagues about running.  As we talked, I remembered how much I used to love it.  Over the past year, I've managed to run a few times, usually a mile or maybe two, but only as a warm-up for a weight training work-out. Last night I kept going after I hit the two-mile point.  I thought, what the heck, let's see how far I can go, and then with each passing lap marker, I thought, I wanna be able to tell Rick and Tony I made the whole three miles.  And I did.  I love it when friends inspire me.

Here's a photo of some of the 44 folks who finished the Fitness Challenge:

Left to right: Tony Bonastia (street director), Beth von Behren (public information officer), Russ Hawes (chief administrative officer), Lynnette Hicks (assistant purchasing director), Theresa Ebeling (wellness coordinator), Rick McKinley (distribution engineer, Kirkwood Electric), Jason Valvero (superintendent of recreation), Murray Pounds (parks and recreation director), Kris Houska (office manager, Finance), Georgia Ragland (assistant chief administrative officer), Don LaChance (recreation supervisor), and Susie Smith (skating lessons director).

So the next time you see thousands of runners out on the streets of Kirkwood (such as those who crossed the finish line, below, on Thanksgiving Day), it may make a little more sense.  Happy Trails to you all.  See you on December 18.
