CITY EMPLOYEE RETIRES AFTER 49 YEARS: It's not often that we have an employee who reaches a milestone such as 40 years on the job, let alone 49 years.  Street Supervisor Price Fields (pictured center, above), retired on October 1 after 49 years with the City of Kirkwood.  Price began his career with the city in 1965.  Mayor Art McDonnell is on the left, and Street Director Tony Bonastia is on the right.

REMINDERS FROM MSD
DRUG-FREE DRAINS:  PLEASE DISPOSE OF MEDICATIONS PROPERLY

The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) encourages you to dispose of all medications properly. Medication should not be flushed down the toilet!  Wastewater treatment cannot completely eliminate these substances, and so they are commonly found in local waterways, surface waters, and even drinking water.

Keeping over-the-counter and prescription drugs "off the street and out of our rivers" is the mission of Missouri Prescription Pill Drug Disposal (Missouri P2D2), a nonprofit organization whose partners include St. Louis County Police, St. Louis College of Pharmacy, Missouri American Water and MSD, with many other community groups.

Proper Disposal of Drugs

Missouri P2D2 recommends disposing of drugs at a designated collection point. Medicine collection boxes are available at nine police stations in St. Louis County to provide a convenient, safe place to drop off the unneeded medicines:  Including the Kirkwood Police Department.  Both prescription and over-the-counter medicines are accepted. The program is free and anonymous. The drug-disposal box can be found in the lobby of the Kirkwood Police Deaprtment, at 131 W. Madison, and the lobby is open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Drug Take Back

If you are unable to visit the Kirkwood Police Department, or participate in one of the two all-day drug drop-off events KPD hosts each year, you can follow these simple steps to dispose of medicines in the household trash:

  • Mix medicines (do NOT crush tablets or capsules) with an unpalatable substance such as kitty litter or used coffee grounds;
  • Place the mixture in a container such as a sealed plastic bag; and
  • Throw the container in your household trash.
  • Before throwing out your empty pill bottle or other empty medicine packaging, remember to scratch out all information on the prescription label to make it unreadable and protect your privacy.

The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District and all P2D2 partners appreciate your help in keeping drugs off the street and out of our rivers. Thank you.

"50 TREES" NOMINATIONS NOW CLOSED
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO PLANT TREES ON NOVEMBER 1
Now celebrating their 5th year of planting street trees in Kirkwood, the organizers of this year's 50 TREES street-tree planting campaign are pleased to announce that this year's quota for planting sites has been met. The nominating process for Fall 2014 is now closed.

This year's planting day is Saturday, November 1, when teams of volunteers will plant 65 new trees. If you would like to help with this effort, please email: KeepKirkwoodGreen@gmail.com or call Kathy Paulsen at 314-822-8947.

Thanks very much to all who supported this important citizen-initiated program through cash donations or patronage of the Keep Kirkwood Green booth at the Greentree Festival.  Our street trees provide shade, protection, and beauty, and they are a gift to us all.  Thank you, Kirkwood!

NEWS FROM KIRKWOOD WATER
KIRKWOOD WATER WILL BEGIN METER UPGRADES IN OCTOBER

The City will begin a comprehensive water meter replacement program in October that will upgrade or replace approximately 10,340 meters. Residents were notified earlier this year in utility bills that the City would implement an automatic meter reading (AMR) system starting in the Fall.  The City has hired Utility Metering Solutions (UMS) to perform this upgrade and replacement project.  This improvement to the City's water distribution system adds an electronic meter-reading capability and allows the City to replace meters that have served beyond their estimated useful life.

The new "smart" meters will minimize the need for personnel to go onto property or inside the home, and they will eliminate the need for estimated bills. With the new system, Kirkwood Water will have the ability to detect if a leak or backflow problem is occurring in a resident's plumbing system.   The project is predicted to take about six months to complete. A list of frequently asked questions and answers will be posted on the City's Website within the next few weeks.

Some Frequently Asked Questions (and Answers):

Q:  Do I need to be home for the meter replacement work?

A:  Residents with inside meters will need to schedule an appointment for UMS workers to access their home to change out/retrofit their meter. Residents with outside meters do not need to be home. Work will be performed Monday-Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and on Saturday between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Q: How much will the new meter cost me?

A:  There is no charge for the new meter.

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK!
TIME TO RAKE AND COMPOST OR BAG THOSE LEAVES!

Leaves are starting to fall, which means it is time to remove them from your lawn and gardens.  Left in place, the leaves, especially if they are wet, may lead to fungus problems.  Using a mulching mower will chop the leaves and they may then be left on the lawn as a good compost.  The same is true for chopped leaves in garden beds.  If you choose to remove the leaves, they can go into your compost pile or be bagged for yard waste pick-up on your regular sanitation day.  For information on how yard waste bags and collection, visit this page of the City Website (click here).

Leaf removal is a long-term activity through the fall and winter months.  The benefits are healthier lawns and gardens and more exercise for us.

The Kirkwood Garden Club periodically shares a Gardening Tip of the Week with Happenings' readers.  For more information about the Club, visit their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org.  New members and guests, both men and women, are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
Everyday is a Winding Road...

If you have come to City Hall recently, or just driven by, you probably noticed there's a lot of construction going on.  There's construction on the west entrance to the building and on the road (Madison) that runs alongside. For City employees who work in this building and at the Police Department, that's a lot of detours.  Currently, we can only turn in from Kirkwood Road and exit onto Clay Avenue (in a single-lane, one-way traffic pattern), which as you can imagine, has created traffic jams whenever one of the construction trucks needs to enter the roadway (or when the mail is being picked up from the mailbox on Madison).  Over the next couple of weeks, that will get reversed, and motorists will only be able to enter via Clay and exit onto Kirkwood Road, but you get the picture: It's single-lane, one-way congestion for at least another month. And with the big trucks and equipment on the lots, parking sometimes becomes a challenge too.  Amid the chaos, it becomes very important to maintain one's sense of humor, which is why I took this:

I may get a tee-shirt made with that photo.

On the upside, once the construction on Madison is finished (another three to four weeks), it will be a very smooth roadway on which to drive - for employees and residents.  Likewise, the west-side entrance to City Hall, when it's finished, will be safer, more attractive, and much more user-friendly for all who visit this historic building.

On the subject of road construction, the City has contracted with the Lochmueller Group to inspect all of the City's street pavement over the next two to three months. The goal is to prioritize the rebuilding and repair of streets in the City based on the condition of each street.

It is that time of year when there is a lot of street construction going on in Kirkwood.  If you would like to avoid the streets where this is happening (I got stuck on Kirkwood Road for a while last week), be sure to follow us on Facebook or Twitter, where most road closings and construction work are listed daily.  If you use Facebook, search for:   City of Kirkwood, MO (Government), or use this link: https://www.facebook.com/CityOfKirkwoodMo.  If you only use Twitter, our Facebook posts get pushed there:  @KirkwoodCity.

The next time we publish the newsletter, it will be almost Halloween.  If you have kiddos at home, please bring them to City Hall for a Halloween treat bag on Thursday, Oct. 30, from 4pm to 5pm (just prior to the Downtown Halloween Walk) or all day on Halloween.

Have a great two weeks.  See you on October 23!
