BIKE WALK PLAY KIRKWOOD!
"BIKE WALK PLAY KIRKWOOD" CANCELED

The Bike-Walk-Play Kirkwood event for this Saturday, September 27, has been canceled due to a lack of volunteer availability. The traffic-free event had been scheduled for 10:00 a.m., with certain Kirkwood streets closed to motorists. All streets will now be open.   The City of Kirkwood supports walkability and was a strong supporter of this Trailnet event. The City will work with Trailnet to reschedule it.

MADISON AVE AND CITY HALL CONSTRUCTION

WEST MADISON WILL BE REBUILT STARTING WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 29

West Madison Avenue, running along City Hall and in front of the Police Department, will be rebuilt over the next five to six weeks, by M & H Construction.  The street will be blocked off, one lane at a time, in sections.  There will always be one lane open, and there will always be one entrance/exit open to the City Hall and Police Department parking lots.  Depending on which end of Madison they are working on, there may be no entrance from Kirkwood Road at all (if, for example, they are working on the north lane at the City Hall end of the street).  Likewise, when they are working on the Clay Avenue end of the street, there may be no entrance from Clay onto Madison.  Detour signs will be posted.

MAIN WEST ENTRANCE TO CITY HALL WILL BE OPEN DURING CONSTRUCTION

The City Hall Enhancement project will move to the west side of the building, where the main entrance is, over the coming weeks.  A temporary sidewalk has been built so that access to the building will be unimpeded.  However, some parking may be restricted due to construction vehicles.  Please check the City's Facebook page for updates as the work progresses.

NEWS FROM KIRKWOOD WATER
KIRKWOOD WATER WILL BEGIN METER UPGRADES IN OCTOBER

The City will begin a comprehensive water meter replacement program in October that will upgrade or replace approximately 10,340 meters. Residents were notified earlier this year in utility bills that the City would implement an automatic meter reading (AMR) system starting in the Fall.  The City has hired Utility Metering Solutions (UMS) to perform this upgrade and replacement project.  This improvement to the City's water distribution system adds an electronic meter-reading capability and allows the City to replace meters that have served beyond their estimated useful life.

The new "smart" meters will minimize the need for personnel to go onto property or inside the home, and they will eliminate the need for estimated bills. With the new system, Kirkwood Water will have the ability to detect if a leak or backflow problem is occurring in a resident's plumbing system.   The project is predicted to take about six months to complete. A list of frequently asked questions and answers will be posted on the City's Website within the next few weeks.

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK!
TIME TO BRING THE HOUSE PLANTS IN

As temperatures cool, it is time to bring your house plants in after a summer outdoors.  Before bringing the pots in, inspect the plant, pot, and saucer carefully.  There may be insects and slugs in, on, or under the pot or saucer.  Drenching the plant, soil, and saucer with an insecticidal soap (made for plants) will eliminate most problems.  If the pot is very large, you may want to gently check below the surface of the soil for worms.  The same process applies to any plants you remove from the ground to store or enjoy indoors during the winter.

The Kirkwood Garden Club periodically shares a Gardening Tip of the Week with Happenings' readers.  For more information about the Club, visit their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org.  New members and guests, both men and women, are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.
WINTER WEATHER REMINDER
ORDER OF PLOWING:  A REMINDER

It may seem early, but we are hearing that it will be an early and WET winter, so we thought we woul run this now as a reminder, and then again in a month or so.

When snow falls, City plowing crews focus first on the main roads, such as Kirkwood Road, Geyer Road, Essex, Woodlawn, Woodbine, Couch, etc.   Cleaning these streets first allows emergency vehicles to get through when needed. During this first stage, street crews also work on hills and bridges. Crews do not begin to work on secondary streets until the snow stops. Secondary streets include Taylor, Fillmore, Dickson, Quan, Rose Hill, Clay, Lindeman, Harrison, Peeke, and Ann. When all those are done, crews move to subdivision streets and clear those. PRE-TREATING: When possible, crews pre-treat all City streets when a storm has been predicted. However, in some storms, when the temperatures are very low, pretreating may not work very well.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
Walking on Sunshine...
This is GREAT walking weather, don't you think?!  I head out for a walk around Kirkwood almost every day, because we know - we know - that winter is not far away now.  Sorry to be a downer, but we are hearing from the prognosticators that it will be an early winter, and a cold and wet one. Be sure and check out the "Order of Plowing" article above, which I will run periodically over the next few months.

Next week, City employees embark on a second Fitness Challenge.  This will be a little bit tougher than the one we held in the spring (the one that inspired Rick McKinley, pictured above in the photo of the week, to start walking and running). The new Challenge requires participants to do a minimum of 150 minutes of cardio (aerobic) exercise per week by the end of the 8-week period (we will start with a minimum of 60 minutes per week and work our way up to 150).  That may sound like a lot, but it's basically only 30 minutes a day for five days of the week.  That 30-minute daily allowance of exericse is crucial.  According to Dr. Mike Evans, who has a whole YouTube Channel devoted to the simple ways we humans can be healthier, you can spend 23.5 hours of every day working, eating, sleeping, and watching TV, but to live a longer, healthier life, you need to reserve the remaining 30 minutes for exercise.  Here's a wonderful little video (okay, it's nine minutes long) that artistically describes why and how those 30 minutes are important:  People Are Dying Early Because They're Not Doing Something Most One-Year-Olds Can Do.

We will hold some team competitions as part of the Fitness Challenge, and a group of us women who work at City Hall plan to do weekly group walks around Kirkwood.  So if you see us, be sure to wave!  Here's a photo I took recently on one of my walks.  This is Sharon, a former Kirkwood resident, and her twin grandsons Max and Reed, who love to visit Walker Park (aka "Turtle Park") with their grandmother.

My proofreader is out of the office today, so please forgive me for any typos.  Have a great weekend.  See you in two weeks!
