GREENTREE PLANNING COMMITTEE MAKES ANNUAL VISIT TO KIRKWOOD CITY COUNCIL:  Each year, the Greentree Planning Committee dresses up in that year's theme and visits the City Council meeting just prior to the start of the Festival, to personally invite Council members and the public to come on out for the festivities. This year, the team dressed up as Disco revelers, in the  spirit of this year's theme:
DISCO COMES TO KIRKWOOD.

GREENTREE PARADE REMINDERS FOR SATURDAY
GREENTREE PARADE ROUTE / STREET CLOSURES
The 54th annual Greentree Parade steps off at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 13. This year's theme is: Disco Comes to Kirkwood!  Route (map above): The parade starts at West Essex at Kirkwood High School.  It travels east to Kirkwood Road and turns south on Kirkwood Road, heading to West Argonne. It goes west on West Argonne toward Geyer Road, where it ends at the Community Center parking lot.

Some Kirkwood streets will be closed during the parade, including:  Kirkwood Road, from Monroe north to Jewel Avenue; West Essex, from Kirkwood Road west to Chopin; West Argonne, from Kirkwood Road west to Geyer Road. Taylor Avenue east of Kirkwood Road will be the detour route, and signs will be posted.

Keep in mind:  Any open streets that intersect with those outlined in blue on the map will be blocked at the parade route.  For example, West Adams will be open, but you will not be able to enter or cross Kirkwood Road from Adams.

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK!
DIVIDE AND MOVE PERENNIALS IN SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER

September and October are good times to divide or move perennials and ornamental grasses.  If you are dividing plants, there are two options.  One is to dig up the entire plant, and separate into sections.  The other option is to cut a section out of the plant while it is still in the ground.  In either case, plant the section in its new location and water well.  For the plant left in the original location, make sure soil is covering the root system and water well.  Both the new section and the original plant may be mulched to reduce weeds and retain moisture.

The Kirkwood Garden Club periodically shares a Gardening Tip of the Week with Happenings' readers.  For more information about the Club, visit their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org.  New members and guests, both men and women, are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
Back from Minneapolis!
I spent a few days in the land of Mary Richards (aka Mary Tyler Moore) last week, attending the annual 3CMA conference.  That's the City-County Communications & Marketing Association.  I always learn a lot at these conferences, and this year was no
Selfie with the MTM Statue in Downtown Minneapolis
exception.  I learned that Apocalypse Now was the first movie to have a sound designer (most people guessed Star Wars, which came out at about the same time) and that the average "shot" in a Hollywood movie is only four to six seconds long. This was in a class on taking and using video to get information out, and they offered a lot of good suggestions on technique and gear.  In a session on citizen engagement, I was reminded that we government communicators should never stop asking residents what they want to hear more about.

Did you know that 56 percent of adults now have a smart phone?   Assuming that statistic holds true for Kirkwood residents, here's my first citizen-engagement question for all of you readers:  Are you reading this newsletter on your phone?  To participate in this little survey, simply hit reply, and answer "yes" or "no" (plus any comments you have).  I'll let you know in the next edition how the responses broke down.

Of course, THIS weekend is the big weekend in Kirkwood:  The 54th Annual Greentree Festival in Kirkwood Park.  Friday night, we open the festivities with the awesome "Fabulous Motown Revue" at the Lions' Amphitheater at 6:30 p.m.  Be sure to stop by the new Kirkwood Arts Commission booth down by the Folklife Festival.  We will have give-aways and a raffle!  (See above for links to the festival website, where you can get the whole schedule.)  NEW THIS YEAR: The shuttle will be running Friday night too!!

For today, I will end with this photo of the September 11 Memorial Museum that opened in New York City earlier this year.

Have a great Greentree weekend.  See you in two weeks (on September 25).
