FIRE SAFETY FOR COLLEGE KIDS
FIRE SAFETY CHECKLIST FOR STUDENTS

Have you just sent a kid off to college?  Are they living on their own for the first time, rather than in a dorm?  Here's a great checklist for young college students with more important stuff on their minds than their own safety (it's on their parents' minds!).  (Courtesy of the National Fire Protection Association, Public Education Division)

CHECKLIST - MAKE SURE...
  • The home has smoke alarms installed in each sleeping room, outside every sleeping area, and on each level. Note: If your home doesn't have smoke alarms, ask your landlord to install them.
  • The smoke alarms are interconnected, so when one sounds, they all sound.
  • The home has carbon monoxide alarms.
  • Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are tested once a month.
  • A list of emergency numbers, local fire and police departments, are posted on the refrigerator.
  • For best protection, the ho me has a fire sprinkler system.
  • There are two ways out of every room in the home.
  • All windows and doors open easily.
  • Escape routes are clear of clutter so they can be used.
  • There is an outside meeting place in front of the home where everyone will meet if the smoke alarm sounds.
  • Everyone in the home participates in home fire drills at least twice a year.
  • I review the home escape plan with overnight guests.
  • Smokers smoke outside and use sturdy, deep, non-tip ashtrays.
  • One heat-producing appliance (such as a coffeemaker, toaster, space heater, etc.) is plugged into a receptacle outlet at a time.
  • Porches and decks are clear of upholstered furniture, barbecue grills, fire pits, and chimineas.

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK!
REVIVE YOUR LAWN IN SEPTEMBER

September is a great month to revive your lawn.  If you have been fighting weeds, use an herbicide to kill them.  In 7-10 days you can plant new grass seed.  If weeds are not a problem, just over seed your lawn for more lush grass.  Rake up any fallen leaves and/or thatch in your lawn.  Sprinkle grass seed (by hand or spreader) over the desired areas.  A top dressing of compost will keep the seed in place and enrich the soil.  Water the area lightly.  Keep the seeded area damp (not soaked) until the new grass is established.  Do not use any weed preventer as this is generally a pre-emergent and will keep the grass seed from germinating.  Crab grass, dandelion, etc. prevention can be applied in the spring.  Allow the grass to grow several inches before mowing.

The Kirkwood Garden Club periodically shares a Gardening Tip of the Week with Happenings' readers.  For more information about the Club, visit their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org.  New members and guests, both men and women, are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
Steamy enough for ya?  The humidity today is hovering at about 64 percent, which is the lowest it has been in weeks!  When I left the gym on Tuesday (humidity: 91 percent), my glasses steamed up so quickly, I had to take them off to walk to my car.  But, as we know, this too shall pass...

We Missourians tend to think of Labor Day as the end of summer, even though it may stay hot through Halloween, and the calendar doesn't technically agree with us for another three weeks. So it's here in spirit.  That means so many things:
  • The pool closes for the season next Monday at 6:00 p.m.
  • Dog Pool Parties are next week:  Tuesday and Thursday (details above).
  • Greentree Festival:  September 12, 13, and 14.  Details above, and don't forget the PARTY IN THE PARK on September 6, in its 4th year, which kicks off the festivities the weekend before.
  • Fall Hayrides. Offered on Sundays by the Parks and Recreation department in the Fall.  Dates/Times: October 12 and 26, 6:45 p.m. or 7:45 p.m. November 2 and 9, 6:00 or 7:00 p.m. Cost: $150 per wagon, per night. In the event of inclement weather, we will not be able to reschedule, but a refund will be made. Call 314-822-5855. Hurry: These fill up fast.
  • Turkey Day Run:  SIgn-ups begin October 1.  More details to come.
  • Fall Rummage Sale at the Community Center on October 4.  Got stuff to sell?  We are taking reservations for tables and space through September 27.  Call 822-5855 or send an email to Katy at NiemanKL@kirkwoodmo.org.
  • Train Show: The Mississippi Valley Train Show choo-choos into town again on Saturday, October 11 at the Community Center, 11am to 4pm.

Can Thanksgiving and Christmas be far behind?

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes:  This is the last Kirkwood Happenings newsletter for August, and beginning in September we move to an every-other week distribution.  Look for the next edition on Thursday, September 11, and I promise it will be chock full of more fun, Fall stuff.  Meanwhile:  Have a great weekend and a great holiday.  (Visit the pool one last time!)  See you in two weeks!

P.S.  My proofreader is out sick.  Please excuse any typos!  Thank you.
