GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK!
HEN-PECKED BY HENBIT?

If your garden was overrun with henbit this past spring (see photo), it is time to apply a pre-emergent to eliminate the problem next spring.  Henbit is a self seeding weed that appears in the spring, dies off in the heat of the summer, and reappears again in the early spring.  Using a pre-emergent now keeps the seeds from germinating next year.  Pre-emergent for henbit is most successful when applied now through mid September.  A word of caution, if there are other self seeding plants in your garden, the pre-emergent will inhibit the spouting of those seeds as well as the henbit.

A note about last week's tip:  Birds love eating the seeds from Black eyed Susans and cone flowers.  Leaving the spent flowers in place will provide food for them and a show for us.  You can use a pre-emergent to deter new flowers if you no longer want those flowers in your garden.

The Kirkwood Garden Club periodically shares a Gardening Tip of the Week with Happenings' readers.  For more information about the Club, visit their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org.  New members and guests, both men and women, are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
Hot August Days Have Arrived.  Over the past week or so, we had enough rain (and we certainly had enough humidity) to keep our plants, shrubs, trees, and grass alive, but the next few weeks may be a bit drier (and they will certainly be hotter).  Here are a few tips from our friends at Missouri Public Utility Alliance, on how to conserve water during the hot, dry days of August:
  • Position sprinklers so water lands on the lawn, not on paved areas.
  • Try to water only in the evening or very early morning to minimize evaporation.
  • Cut your grass at least 3 inches high to shade the roots, making it more tolerant of drought. Keep your mower blade sharp for the healthiest grass.
  • Use a broom instead of a hose to clean off your driveway or sidewalk.
  • Wash your car less often, or at a car wash where they clean and recycle their water. If you wash your car at home, use a bucket of soapy water rather than running the hose. Keep a spring-loaded nozzle on the hose.
The good news is...August leads to September, and that means THE GREENTREE FESTIVAL is just around the corner.  The vendors and schedules are pretty much all in place now, and we have links to the Website for you (above) for all the important information.  A printed schedule also went out in utility bills this month, and an abbreviated version will appear in the Eye on Kirkwood next week (August 29).

Newsletter Updates:  The Kirkwood Happenings newsletter will go to every-other-weekly distribution beginning next week, meaning there will be an edition next week, but none on September 4.  Then we will be back on the 11th.

Have a great weekend - stay cool!  See you next Thursday.
