NEWS FROM MoDOT
MoDOT PREPARES FOR WINTER OPERATIONS

Even though Missouri is still in the dog days of summer, the Missouri Department of Transportation has begun preparations to make sure it has the right number of people, in the right places, ready to plow and treat winter weather conditions on Missouri's 33,891 miles of state roads. While the department's 2,400 maintenance employees are ready to plow, if a big regional or statewide storm hits, MoDOT must rely on extra help. Each year the department recruits seasonal workers and emergency snowplow operators to fill the gaps and get the job done.

"Hiring seasonal maintenance and emergency snowplow operators is one of the most cost-effective ways we can get extra help during winter storms," said MoDOT State Maintenance Engineer Beth Wright. "We staff our maintenance forces at a level that will allow us to maintain excellent service to Missourians, but if a winter storm hits and crews are working around the clock, we need to make sure we have enough people to operate safely."

MoDOT requires maintenance worker applicants to be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma and possess a commercial driver's license, Class A or B, with no airbrake restrictions. Applicants must also successfully complete a criminal background check and drug screening. Emergency snowplow operators do not have guaranteed working hours, but qualified applicants receive extensive training so they are able to perform entry-level duties related to MoDOT's snow removal operations. Those hired as emergency operators can earn $13.82 to $15.63 per hour, depending on their level of experience.  To learn more about these positions, or to apply, visit www.modot.org/jobs, or call 888-275-6636.

"It's time to work on the winter battle plan that will help get travelers back on Missouri roadways as quickly as possible," said Wright. "During the fall, crews will inspect equipment, make necessary repairs, review snowplow routes, and refresh their skills with training. We need to fill all of our vacancies in maintenance now to be ready for the winter."

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK!
TO DEADHEAD OR NOT TO DEADHEAD

When you are deadheading (cutting spent flowers) from your plants, take a minute to assess what the plant is.  For example, daisies, cone flowers, and black-eyed Susans are just some of the plants that are self seeders.  If you want these flowers in your garden next year, drop several of the flowers heads back in the garden.  Better yet, open the center of the flower head, exposing the seeds and drop those in your garden.  You'll be rewarded with these flowers making a come back next spring.  If you no longer want these flowers, just remove the flower heads.  You'll probably still get a few plants returning, but they will be easy to remove.

The Kirkwood Garden Club periodically shares a Gardening Tip of the Week with Happenings' readers.  For more information about the Club, visit their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org.  New members and guests, both men and women, are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.
ONE BOOK, ONE KIRKWOOD

KPL ONE BOOK/ONE KIRKWOOD AUTHOR VISIT TONIGHT

Kirkwood Public Library will host author Alex George on Thursday, August 14, at 7:00 p.m., as part of the One Book, One Kirkwood community-wide reading event. George will be talking about and signing his book A Good American.   Books will be available for sale and signing.

The One Book, One Kirkwood event, supported by the Friends of the Kirkwood Public Library, is intended to get the whole community reading and talking about one book. The event encourages both literacy and interaction. A Good American is a highly touted novel from Alex George, a native Englishman who presently resides in Columbia, Missouri. The novel is the story of German immigrants in the United States and how one of them enlists to fight for the USA in World War I. The historical events of the early 20th century, from Prohibition to the civil rights movement, ragtime to rock and roll, play out as the backdrop of a historical novel that is a true family saga.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
It May Be August, but...  My friend and colleague Priscilla Utley (HR Manager) and I were waiting for an open court at the Kirkwood Park Tennis Courts yesterday when she mentioned a message on the electronic sign at the corner of Geyer and Adams.  The sign reminded tennis players that it is time to sign up for the Greentree Tennis Tournament.  She exclaimed to me:  "Greentree?!  That's a FALL thing."  Yes, yes it is a "Fall Thing," and Fall, my friends, is just around the corner (see our top two stories).   I also received an e-newsletter from the Downtown Business District yesterday that listed the following Fall events and dates.  Mark your calendars for:
~ September 27:  Harvest Festival.
~ October 30:  Halloween Walk
~ November 22:  Holiday Walk
~ December 4, 11, & 12:  Photos with Santa
~ December 27:  Winter Fireworks

It's a little hard to think about Winter Fireworks when the July 4 ones are barely a month behind us, and yet it's fairly likely that Christmas decorations will go on sale sometime over the coming month.  Many schools and school districts started school this week, and Kirkwood Schools start back next Tuesday, August 19.

At least we are not getting the horrendous heat we typically experience in August, which is a relief. The Weather Channel Website predicts temperatures in the upper 80s for the next week or so and then maybe a return to the lower 90s.  Not too shabby for August.   The down-side of that is, unfortunately, that lower-than-normal temperatures are predicted for the coming winter months as well. Get your snow shovels ready.

Speaking of August, don't forget:  This is the last week at the Pool with full hours (see story above).  Have a great weekend, and see you next Thursday!
