PHOTO OF THE WEEK:  The public is invited to participate in the planning process for the enhancement of Fillmore Park.  Fillmore Park is located at the intersection of Fillmore Avenue and Clinton Place.  To begin the planning process, a meeting will be held Tuesday, August 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Nipher Middle School, 700 S. Kirkwood Road, in the gymnasium. Participants will have the opportunity to offer their thoughts and visions of what the park could be in the future, following the expansion of the park through the acquisition of a neighboring lot.

The visioning process will be accomplished through what is known as a "Design Charette." During the Charette, participants share their ideas with each other in small groups, working together to develop a group plan. Those plans are then shared with the other groups, and a master vision is developed.  The design team will develop a conceptual plan for the park based on this "Master Vision." The conceptual plan will be presented at a later date for review by the public before its final acceptance.   The Design Charette process is open to the public, but an invitation has been sent specifically to the residents in the area immediately surrounding the park.

The original 0.9 acres for Fillmore Park were acquired in the late 1970s with Community Block Grant Funds. The original 0.9-acre park features two playground areas, renovated in 2009, and several benches. The addition of the neighboring 0.2-acre lot, purchased in 2013, brings the total area of the park to 1.1 acres.

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK!
NEED TO DIVIDE OR MOVE IRISES?  NOW IS THE TIME!

From now through the end of August is the time to move, divide, or remove iris from your garden.  Trim the foliage, them lift from the soil with a trowel or garden fork.  Discard any rhizomes that are mushy or diseased.  If dividing, gently break the larger rhizomes in two.  When planting/re-planting, lay the rhizome horizontally and cover with a small amount of soil.  If you have left over rhizomes, share with a friend.

Remember to keep watering.  We are in a drought condition with very little rain in the Kirkwood area.  Without adequate moisture, trees and shrubs will really suffer as we head into fall and winter.

The Kirkwood Garden Club periodically shares a Gardening Tip of the Week with Happenings' readers.  For more information about the Club, visit their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org.  New members and guests, both men and women, are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
My T.I.L.T. (Things I Love on Thursday):  Peanut M&Ms, getting out and walking around in LATE JULY in record-low temperatures, learning more about street lighting at this morning's Design Charette hosted by Kirkwood Electric (more details to come), discovering Fillmore Park when I had to take photos of it (it will join my list of places to visit on my lunch time walks), branching out in my magazine reading by subscribing to totally new publications (Southern Living, Vanity Fair), getting some old photos scanned in for TBT (Throw-Back Thursday) - that's me on the right exactly 47 years ago this month, and looking forward to hitting the pool this weekend (it hasn't been 47 years, but it has been too long).

My proofreader is on vacation this week so please forgive me any typos you see (but if information is missing, please let me know so I can fix it next week).  We are looking at weather in the upper 80s this weekend with some rain maybe on Friday and Saturday (so, typical St. Louis weather).  Have a great weekend and see you next Thursday!
