PHOTO OF THE WEEK:  Special Downtown Business District Executive Director Donna Poe took this photograph of some of the many flowers that were planted downtown this year by the Kirkwood Parks' personnel as part of Downtown Kirkwood's Enhancement Program.   City horticulturalist Pete Laufersweiler and his staff persisted with their planting efforts despite all the rain we had this spring, and the results are spectacular.

KIRKWOOD NIGHT OUT

KIRKWOOD EVENT SET FOR SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4

The Annual National Night Out for American cities is typically scheduled on the first Tuesday in August.  However, in 2010, the Kirkwood Police Department decided to move its "Night Out" back by a couple of months - to the cooler month of October.  Therefore, this year's event will be held on Saturday, October 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., on the parking lot between Kirkwood City Hall and the Police Department.

As always, KPD will have a variety of organizations on hand to make the day interesting for everyone.  There will be more information to come in the weeks ahead.  Police Officer Jim Cox reminds all residents that you can continue to have your local block parties anytime your neighborhood chooses to do so.  If you contact him at least a week in advance, representatives from both the Police and Fire Departments will stop by to visit.  You can contact him by email at CoxJD@KirkwoodMO.org, or by phone at 314-822-5868.

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK!
GETTING RID OF TRUMPET VINES

If you want or need to remove any climbing vine such as ivy or trumpet vine, from your trees, here is an option.  Cut out a 2-3" section from the "stem" close to the ground.  Generally the stem is pretty thick and resembles a branch.  Immediately paint both ends of the cut out section with a woody plant killer.  (Regular herbicides are not strong enough.)  By painting the stem area coming from the ground you are killing the roots.  By painting the area that is climbing your tree you are killing the foliage.  DO NOT pull the vines from your tree.  Doing so will also pull off bark which could damage the tree and leave it open to infestations of bugs or disease.  The foliage will die back and the vines will fall off on their own.

The Kirkwood Garden Club periodically shares a Gardening Tip of the Week with Happenings' readers.  For more information about the Club, visit their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org.  New members and guests, both men and women, are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine.  You don't have to be a fan of country-western music to know who wrote and sang those words.  Even rock-'n-roll boomers tend to have a deep fondness for the Man in Black.  I had the honor of seeing him live in concert once, and it was a show I will never forget.  While he is no longer with us, his music lives on, and this Saturday, you can catch a lot of it at the "Making Music" concert in Kirkwood Park ("One More Time: A Tribute to Johnny Cash").  Bring some friends and a picnic basket, or enjoy a meal from the food trucks that will be on hand (story above).

If you enjoy the show and would like to get involved with helping to keep the concert series going and growing into the future, please consider becoming a volunteer.  Right now, we need ushers at the shows for the remainder of the season (two more shows in August), and we will need ushers next summer as well.  If you would like to volunteer, please reply to this e-newsletter, or email me separately at Arts@KirkwoodMO.org.  Thank you.

We had another couple of mild days this week, and nobody is complaining, but hot weather will be back this weekend.  The 10-day outlook seems to be saying mid-80s next week, which is not at all bad, but of course that prediction could change.  Have a great week and see you next Thursday!

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine, I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds, Because you're mine, I walk the line
