PHOTO OF THE WEEK:  The clouds on Tuesday over City Hall framed the west side of this historic building beautifully.  Next week, a project to give the building a bit of a facelift will begin on the east side.

CITY HALL ENHANCEMENT PROJECT BEGINS NEXT WEEK:   The scope of the project will involve removal and replacement of the walkways and paved areas between City Hall and Kirkwood Road on the east side (Phase One) and between City Hall and the parking lot on the west side (Phase Two), as well as landscaping on both sides.

Phase One begins the week of July 14, when temporary fencing is installed along the east perimeter of the building and grounds, facing Kirkwood Road. The fencing will make the sidewalk in front of City Hall, along Kirkwood Road, inaccessible.  Pedestrians should plan to use the sidewalk on the other side of Kirkwood Road.  PLEASE NOTEDuring Phase One of construction, the front lawn of City Hall will be unavailable for use by anyone attending Thursday night concerts at Station Plaza.

Demolition of paved areas will follow.  The temporary fencing will remain in place until the completion of Phase One.  Phase One is estimated to be completed in September, barring any unforeseen complications or bad weather.
Phase Two of the project will begin immediately after the completion of Phase One.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
Everybody needs a little help now and then... This week we are asking all of our Kirkwood friends to donate a little food to KirkCare - because somewhere somebody is hungry.  We're also asking you all to consider giving blood at our July 16 blood drive (details for both drives are listed above) because summer is the time when it is really needed.  Thank you.

This week we needed your help, or more precisely, your patience.  We had two electric pole fires on Dougherty Ferry that resulted in power interruptions all over the City.  Those flashes of power that last a second or two are actually the Kirkwood system automatically rerouting your power to work around the power delivery system failure.  We are very grateful to our friends at Ameren for diagnosing the problem in their delivery system (rest assured: the problems were not in the connections to your homes) and getting it fixed as soon as they could.  Some homes in the immediate area were without power Wednesday night for a few hours so that Ameren could replace the destroyed pole.  We are very grateful that the temperatures were in the low 80s rather than the high 90s this week.

Again, thank you!

Well, for my first week back after a vacation, it has been rather eventful and busy.  Parks & Recreation Director Murray Pounds and I have been working to get the Greentree Website updated for you all before the big event in September.  I've also got a few new brochures coming out soon - look for the new Human Rights Commission brochure in your utility bills in October, and this week I'm working on a brochure on our 50/50 Sidewalk Program (more details on that will also be coming in this newsletter).  And we've been working to get the word out about the construction that begins next week at City Hall.  Please see the top article in this newsletter if you regularly attend the Thursday night concerts at Station Plaza.

It has been a beautiful week, weather-wise, in Kirkwood.  I hope you've had a chance to get out and enjoy it.  I took a 3.3 mile walk around the neighborhoods yesterday while the temperatures were mild, and it's a good thing. My weather app tells me we are looking at a high of 97 on Saturday, and then 91 and possible storms on Sunday. Yikes!  Well, it is St. Louis in summer. Have a great week - and see you next Thursday!
