KITCHEN TABLE TALK
MEET STAFF FOR SENATOR MCCASKILL ON JULY 1
Brendan Fahey, a staff member for Missouri's U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, will meet with residents on Tuesday, July 1, at the Oak Bend Branch of the St. Louis County Library, 842 S. Holmes Avenue.  This is an opportunity for residents to let the senator know what issues are on their minds and to get input on federal policies and legislation. The information will then go back to the senator.  Senator McCaskills's "Kitchen Table Talks" also serve to inform residents of the services available to them through the senator's regional offices. Her staff is available to assist residents on a range of federal government issues. For more information, or if you have an issue with a federal agency that you need assistance with, please contact Brendan at Brendan_Fahey@McCaskill.senate.gov or call 314-367-1364.
NEWS FROM MoDOT
MOVE FENDER BENDERS TO THE SHOULDER!

This summer, motorists are being reminded how they can help keep Missouri roads safe.  The reminder has a straightforward message: if you're in a minor car crash, move to the shoulder. It's the safest thing to do in most instances, and it's the law. The campaign is called "Steer It and Clear It." Missouri law requires that motorists who are in a minor crash with no injuries must clear their vehicle from moving traffic by moving to the side of the road.

This seemingly simple action not only keeps traffic flowing, but also saves lives. National studies have shown that up to 20 percent of all collisions on highways are "secondary crashes," due to an earlier crash that was not fully cleared. Clearing crashes quickly significantly reduces the chance for a "secondary crash," and helps emergency responders get there faster.  Many drivers were taught to wait for the police to arrive before moving their car. Police and insurance companies will not penalize you for moving your vehicle off the road.

In addition to the campaign, road signs along major regional highways remind motorists that, so long as their vehicle can be driven and there is a safe turn-off point, the very first step after an accident should be getting the vehicle off the road. The rule does not apply however, in cases where there is more than a minor injury.

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK!
IT'S TIME TO PRUNE!

If you are planning to prune a spring blooming shrub such as an azalea or a spirea, this is the time to do so.  Pruning should be completed by the end of the month.  Any later pruning will result in little or no flowering next spring.  Spring blooming shrubs and trees will be setting their buds for next year's flowers this summer.  When you prune it is recommended no more than 25% of the growth should be removed.

The Kirkwood Garden Club periodically shares a Gardening Tip of the Week with Happenings' readers.  For more information about the Club, visit their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org.  New members and guests, both men and women, are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
My T.I.L.T. (Things I Love on Thursday):  Remembering that calamine lotion is still the best way to treat poison ivy, the Fourth of July and FIREWORKS, Mexican food in the summer time (tamales!), finishing up our first-ever Employee Fitness Challenge, playing tennis with colleagues in the new "Courts Complex" in Kirkwood Park, putting the finishing touches on my trip to Seattle next week to visit my daughter, which brings me to:

This is a two-week edition of Weekly Happenings because your faithful editor will be heading to the west coast and cooler temperatures (or so I hope) next week.  Don't forget we're closed on the 4th, but sanitation will be unaffected. Have a GREAT Holiday next week. See you in two weeks!
