NEWS FROM MoDOT
MoDOT WILL CLOSE RAMP FROM ROUTE 100 TO ROUTE 109 FOR A MONTH

The Missouri Department of Transportation will close the ramp from westbound Route 100 to Route 109 for a month after morning rush on Monday, June 9.  The ramp will be closed so crews can complete ramp work needed as part of the project to widen Route 109 between Route 100 and Clayton Road.  To detour around the closure, drivers should use Taylor Road and Manchester Road to get to Route 109.  The detour will be marked. The ramp should reopen by July 1, 2014.

MoDOT WILL CLOSE PORTION OF I-44 DOWNTOWN THIS WEEKEND

Missouri Department of Transportation will close all lanes of I-44 in both directions from Broadway to the Poplar Street Bridge this weekend.  Crews will close the interstate in both directions starting at 8 p.m. Friday, June 6, to remove the Market and Chestnut Street bridges over the interstate.  All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, June 9.  This work is part of preparations for the CityArchRiver Park Over the Highway project.  The Eads Bridge will also be closed from 8 p.m. June 6 to 5 a.m. June 9 to ensure that interstate traffic moves smoothly.

PUBLIC HEARING TONIGHT ON I-64/HWY 40 LANE ADDITION

The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold an open house style public meeting tonight (June 5), from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the Transportation Management Center, 14301 S. Outer 40 Drive, Chesterfield, 63017.  The purpose of the meeting is to discuss information about an upcoming lane addition project on I-64.  The project will add another lane on westbound I-64 between I-270 and Clarkson Road and another lane on eastbound I-64 between Route 141 and I-270. The lane addition is similar to that done on I-270 over the last two years:  Drivers will have four 11-foot lanes in those sections of I-64 and 10 foot shoulders in most locations. In addition, MoDOT is making improvements to the interchange between Route 141 and I-64 and making some improvements on Route 141 between the interstate and St. Luke's Hospital Drive.

During the meeting, MoDOT engineers will share information about the plans and schedule for the projects. In addition, they will discuss the sound study conducted for the project with impacted residents. Engineers will present a short briefing on the sound study process at 4:45 p.m. and 6:15 p.m.  The briefing will discuss the federal requirements and the process that MoDOT used to conduct and verify the sound study on this project.Participants may attend at any time during the open house, and are welcome to attend either presentation on the sound study.

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK!
THINK DONUT VS. VOLCANO!

Now that most, if not all, perennials have broken ground it is a great time to apply mulch.  There are many benefits to using mulch.  Helping suppress weeds is one, improving your soil is another, but most importantly, mulch helps conserve moisture and reduce the need to water.  Before putting mulch around your plants and shrubs, pull any weeds or unwanted plants.  Water the area well, put the mulch in place and water again.  An inch of mulch around annuals and other plants should do the job.  No more than 2-3 inches of mulch around shrubs.  Take care to keep the mulch away from the stem or trunk of the plants/shrubs.  Think donut vs. volcano.

The Kirkwood Garden Club periodically shares a Gardening Tip of the Week with Happenings' readers.  Formore information about the Club, visit their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org.  New members and guests, both men and women, are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
My T.I.L.T. (Things I love on Thursday) for today:  Today's cool weather; getting the Greentree Website updated (we're not done, but it's getting there!), strawberries, tonight's first Downtown concert of the season (6:30 at Station Plaza), making my exercise goal for this week (and losing 3 pounds so far on our Employee fitness Challenge), celebrating my son's 21st birthday, having lunch with other St. Louis-area PIOs (and saying goodbye to one who is moving to Florida), taking a deep breath...

I know we need the rain, but I am really taking a deep breath today as I look over the extended forecast: 30 percent chance of rain tomorrow, 70 percent chance on Saturday, and 30 percent chance on Sunday.  I may not get to all the weeding I need to do this weekend after all.  Have a great weekend, despite the weather, and see you next Thursday!
