LEAF BURNING IS NOT ALLOWED IN THE CITY OF KIRKWOOD:   This is not a real photo of anyone in Kirkwood, but it makes the point that leaves put off a lot of smoke when burned.  The City has received calls in recent weeks complaining about residents burning leaves in their yards.  Here is some information on what is and what is not allowed.
  • No yard waste, construction material, or any items other than dry seasoned wood may be burned. This includes leaves.
  • Open burning that is offensive or objectionable because of smoke emissions or when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such fires hazardous is prohibited.
  • Fire pits:  Fires in approved containers that are a minimum of 15 feet away from any structure are allowed.
  • Portable outdoor fireplaces:  Portable outdoor fireplaces shall be used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and shall not be operated within 15 feet of a structure or combustible material.
  • Bonfires and recreational fires are allowed by permit only, which must be obtained from the Fire Marshal's Office.
  • All bonfires, recreational fires, portable outdoor fireplaces, and fire pits must be constantly attended until the fire is extinguished. A minimum of one portable fire extinguisher complying with Section 906, with a minimum of 4-A rating, or other approved on-site fire extinguishing equipment, such as dirt, sand, water barrel, garden hose, or water truck, must be available for immediate use.
  • All material burned must be dry, seasoned wood.
For additional information, visit the City's Website (under Fire Department) to read the full "Open Burning, Recreational fire, and Portable Outdoor Fire Places" brochure, or call the Fire Marshal at 822-5884.

To report leaf burning, please call the non-emergency police phone number:  314-822-5858.

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK!
WEEDING, PRUNING, AND MORE

Pre-emergent is intended to stop the germination of seeds.  It is not selective.  This means it will prohibit grass seed and flower and veggie seeds as well as weed seeds from germinating.  Pre-emergent does not impact existing grass, flowers, shrubs, or veggies.  It will have no effect on plants/weeds that grow from something other that seed.  Caution should be used when putting the product down around self seeding plants like cone flowers, daisies, columbine, etc.  A friend wiped out her wildflower garden when using a pre-emergent to stop weeds.

Hollies, azaleas, boxwoods, and other broadleaf evergreens were severely impacted by this winter's wind chills that created a lot of winter burn.  Avoid pruning or plant removal until mid June.  Hopefully there will be new growth and the plants will survive.  Keep them watered, and use a low dose of fertilizer specifically designed for acid-loving plants.

P.S. Look for the Kirkwood Garden Club booth at the Earth Day festivities on April 19th, in the Farmer's Market Greenway.

The Kirkwood Garden Club periodically shares a Gardening Tip of the Week with Happenings' readers.  Formore information about the Club, visit their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org.  New members and guests, both men and women, are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
My T.I.L.T. (Things I Love on Thursday) for Today:  Easter lilies, matzoh ball soup, putting away my coats for the season, promoting all the upcoming recycling events (electronics, medical device, pharmaceuticals), watching the hyacinths and tulips I planted last fall emerge, planning what to do over the next several weekends (because there is so much from which to choose, including Earth Day at the Market this weekend and the Library's Book Fair next week - see above), getting a pedicure so I could wear sandals this week (only to pull the heavy socks and boots back out...sigh), getting up at 2am Monday night to view the Blood Moon (well, not the getting up part), and finishing up all my work today so I can enjoy a day off tomorrow (yay!).

I'm not making any promises, but it looks like we may have a beautiful, sunny Easter weekend coming up (in the 70s - but don't quote me, because you know that could change).  Have a great weekend, and see you next Thursday!

P.S. City offices are OPEN tomorrow (Friday, April 18) and on Monday (April 21). Sanitation collection will be normal all week next week. The Kirkwood Public Library will be closed on Sunday in observance of Easter.
