PHOTO OF THE WEEK:  Kirkwood's Human Rights Commission holds an essay contest each year for high school juniors.  This year, the essay question was:  "We all use and have an understanding of what the term human rights means, but do we agree on its meaning? Your essay subject is to define human rights in a way that can be universally accepted by everyone and published in a dictionary."  Pictured above is the First Place Winner, Dalia Bitar (holding plaque), whose essay was titled "Divisions of Dictums and Deeds."  You can read her essay and the other winning essays on the City's Website, here.  Pictured with Dalia are, left to right:  Mayor Art McDonnell and Human Rights Commission members Denis Hart, John Hoffmann, Darnel Frost (HRC Chair), and Ramona Miller.  The other essay winners are: Soley Hyman (Second Place:  "Defining our Freedoms"), Jeffrey Kuziel (Third Place: "Longing for Liberty: Defining Human Rights), Julie Havlak (Honorable Mention: "What Makes Life Worth Living"), Helen Morse (Honorable Mention:  "Natural Freedoms"), Maggie Cox (Honorable Mention: "Keeping Humanity Human"), and Allison Hubbard (Honorable Mention:  "Human Rights and Responsibilities").

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK!
WEED AND FEED YOUR LAWN

When a forsythia in your yard or a neighbor's yard blooms, it is time to apply a weed and feed product on your lawn.  These products combine a pre-emergent that keeps seeds from germinating and a fertilizer for grass growth.  Beware:  The pre-emergent will also keep grass seed from germinating.  Prior to applying these products, clean up any leaves that have accumulated on your lawn.  Follow package directions for the amount to be used and ways to apply.  Good news, fewer dandelions and weeds.  Bad news, more frequent grass cutting.

P.S. Look for the Kirkwood Garden Club booth at the Earth Day festivities on April 19th, in the Farmer's Market Greenway.

The Kirkwood Garden Club periodically shares a Gardening Tip of the Week with Happenings' readers.  Formore information about the Club, visit their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org.  New members and guests, both men and women, are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
County Older Resident Programs (CORP):  Are you familiar with CORP?  CORP is a St. Louis County program that supports more than 8,000 older adults through a range of programs and activities designed to enhance their lives. We have a CORP office here in Kirkwood, at the Community Center, that has been staffed for years by Bonnie McNeill, who decided finally this spring to retire.  Her replacement, Ann Tucker, is currently working out of another office, but as soon as they hire additional staff, the Kirkwood office will reopen.  However, if you or someone you know needs CORP's assistance, feel free to call Ann at 314-481-9999, and she will get you the information you need.

I wish I had known about CORP during the last few years of my mother's life.  Too many older citizens suffer from isolation, and those of us in our "sandwich generation" years may strain to provide the support and care-giving our parents need when we also have small children.  We generally manage to do it, but it can be stressful.  Maybe you or someone in your life could use some of the wonderful resources CORP offers, including:
  • Socialization Services: Clubs and special interest groups, for sharing hobbies or talents.  Activities, such as flower arranging or a behind-the-scenes tour of the Fox Theatre
  • Lifelong Learning:  The Age Smart/Age Well program and Computer Connections
  • Neighbor Helping Neighbor:  A volunteer program offering older residents transportation to vital appointments, telephone conversations, in-home social visits, home care and repair, and respite for caregivers
  • Tax Services and Legal Assistance:  Tax assistance with simple state and federal forms as well as the Circuit Breaker property tax credit.
CORP VOLUNTEERS:  CORP also has tons of volunteer opportunities. Volunteers transport senior adults to and from medical appointments, grocery shopping, and other activities, using their own cars.  They do home visits - stopping by for a chat, to play a game, watch a favorite TV show, or just offer companionship. Other volunteers offer their expertise - teaching basic computer technology, doing home repairs, or sharing hobbies.  IRS-certified volunteers help seniors with their tax forms (simple ones).  If you would like to volunteer, call Kylie Christanell at 314-615-4435, or email her: Kchristanell@stlouisco.com.

My weather app tells me Saturday is going to be an absolutely gorgeous day, much like today, although there is a 40 percent chance (as of this morning) for thunderstorms on Sunday.  Still, not a bad deal. Have a great weekend, and see you next Thursday!
