PHOTO OF THE WEEK:  Kirkwood employees staffed an informational booth at this week's Kirkwood-Des Peres Area Chamber's 8th Annual Marketplace Expo. From left to right: Firefighter/Paramedic Judy Bryant, Police Officer Cliff Kierstead, and Zoning Administrator Ryan Spencer talked to attendees about a variety of topics.  Judy discussed fire safety (and handed out hats - see pic below), while Cliff focused on railroad safety (Rail Safety Day is coming up in a few weeks - see below).  Ryan explained the Bike-Walk Survey the City is currently undertaking (you can access it on the City's Website here) and along with a Trailnet representative, used a map of the City to show route possibilities to residents and other attendees.

KNOW YOUR FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
by Christian Dunman, Kirkwood Safety Manager
Christian

Fire extinguishers are your first line of defense in case of a fire. You should always know the location of the closest fire extinguisher.  Do you know which fire extinguisher to use?  Here are the types:

~ Class A Fire Extinguisher:  This is used on wood, paper, cloth, cardboard and most ordinary combustibles.

~ Class B Fire Extinguisher:  This is used on flammable liquids, such as oils, solvents, greases and gases.

~ Class C Fire Extinguisher:  This is used on energized electrical equipment (connected to a power source) such as electrical boxes, microwave oven, coffee pot or toaster. Never use water on this kind of fire.

~ Class D Fire Extinguisher:  This is used on combustible metals.

In case of fire:  Report the fire immediately  - call 911.  If the fire is small, and you have a safe exit, you might try to fight it after you report it.  If the fire is large, escape is your best choice.  Know your escape route before you need it  - and practice it with your family.

SMOKE ALARMS:

How about your smoke alarm?  When was the last time you changed the batteries?  By checking your smoke alarm every month, you will know if someone borrows the smoke detector batteries for their remote control.  You will also know that your alarm is still working. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. If you notice a chirping noise, it is your smoke alarm telling you it is time to change the batteries.

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK!
PRUNE YOUR BUTTERFLY BUSH

Now is a good time to prune or cut back your butterfly bush and Crape Myrtles.  Butterfly bushes can become very large, so if you are planning to plant one this year make sure you pick a spot that will allow them to grow.  They like plenty of sunshine and don't require lots of water.  Another plus is they aren't picky about being in perfect soil.  They do act as butterfly magnets, hence the name.

P.S. Look for the Kirkwood Garden Club booth at the Earth Day festivities on April 19th, in the Farmer's Market Greenway.

The Kirkwood Garden Club periodically shares a Gardening Tip of the Week with Happenings' readers.  Formore information about the Club, visit their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org.  New members and guests, both men and women, are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
Let's Get Moving!  We have a new Wellness Coordinator at work. Theresa Ebeling (photo) works with us a few hours a week (contracted through BJC) to help get and keep staff fit and healthy.  We are starting to plan a fitness challenge for employees later this spring, so the topic of how many minutes a week one should exercise (ideally) came up. Theresa says the "gold standard" is 150 minutes per week, or 30 minutes of exercise, five days per week.  Of course, for some folks just starting a new exercise routine (maybe for the first time ever), that may be an overly ambitious goal, but for those of us who already exercise, but may need to work on our frequency, it's a very good goal.  So last week I decided to be my own test subject and try it out. I aimed for 150 minutes but ended up only tallying up about 95 minutes, due to meetings and other commitments.  In other words, it's not as easy as it sounds.

According to the American College of Sports Medicine, 20 to 60 minutes of your "ideal" 150 should be of a vigorous intensity (e.g., power walking, running, cycling, swimming), and I didn't manage any of that last week at all.  This week it's been a little better. As of last night, I had completed four days of 40-minute exercise sessions (so 160 total), despite a couple of after-work meetings, and last night I did 20 minutes of vigorous activity (running, elliptical).  I need to get one more session in before Saturday night, but what I'm learning is:  This is not easy.  It takes planning and persistence.  I find myself looking at my calendar on Sunday to see which days I can schedule a gym visit after work and which days I'll have to settle for a walk at lunch (photo right - my selfie in front of Walker Park on Monday's lunch-time walk through Kirkwood:  1.5 miles). The persistence comes in when you find yourself finishing up a work meeting at 5:30 or 6:00 p.m., and realizing you still need to get to the gym before going home to make dinner.

If you are contemplating starting an exercise routine or increasing your current exercise frequency, but are likewise having trouble, there are a couple of things around Kirkwood that might help.  First, don't forget about the Fitness Trail in Kirkwood Park (which you can read about here, on the City Website).  It has four stations.  The recommendation is to walk or run between the stations and to complete each station three times, but you can mix and match as you need.  This week, I used Station 2 (closest to the parking lot) for sit-ups and jumping, Station 3 for sit-ups and push-ups, and Station 1 for stretching.  Station 4 has a pull-up/chin-up bar, and someday I may gather my courage and try it. If you walk the entire trail, it is 0.9 miles, so if you circle it three times, you can easily get an almost-three-mile walk in on top of the fitness activities.  I usually start at the parking lot, but you can also begin at the bottom of Amphitheater Drive, on the west side of the park, near  the Scout Shelter. The link above will take you to a brochure, with a map of the trail (which was profiled this month in the Post-Dispatch by Harry Jackson, in his "Trail of the Week" feature.)

Another option, and this is a fun one, is to purchase a season pass for the Kirkwood Park tennis courts.  You may remember they were rebuilt a couple years ago, so they are wonderful to play on now (no tripping over cracks, which I have actually done). The resident cost for an individual season pass is just $30 ($15 for seniors and $60 for a family of 3 - these rates apply to Kirkwood and Oakland residents).  If you have never played or haven't played in a while, we offer multiple sessions of classes, for beginners through the intermediate level, starting next week and running through August - and for all ages (from 3 through adult).  Back this year:  Cardio Tennis on Monday and Wednesday nights.  New this year: Pickleball (ages 12 through adult - call 822-5855 for a description of the game and to register).

What are YOUR exercise and fitness tips?  If you have a good suggestion for other readers, please send it to me (just hit "reply"), and I'll run it here in an upcoming issue.

Have a great weekend, and see you next Thursday!
