PHOTO OF THE WEEK - MORE CAKE!  You may have seen the stl250 Gateway to the West cake on display at the Train Station.  Here's another one.  This one greets visitors to the Frank Lloyd Wright House in Ebsworth Park, at 120 N. Ballas Road, just south of Dougherty Ferry in Kirkwood. This is one of only two Wright homes in the area, and it is open to the public for guided tours by appointment.  Please call 314-822-8359 to make a reservation.  Tours happen year-round, Wednesday through Sunday, with a maximum of 10 people per tour. The tour takes about 75 minutes, includes a 17-minute video, and costs $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and younger, and $5 per student with school groups. The house was completed in 1955 for Russell and Ruth Kraus, in the Usonian style, which is notable for its architectural integrity and original Wright-designed furnishings.
POOL ID TIME!

GET YOUR ID CARDS BEFORE THE LINES GET LONG!

The Kirkwood Aquatic Center opens on Saturday, May 24, 2014, but if you wait until even mid-May to obtain your season pass or ID card, the lines will be very long. So don't wait. Here's what you need: Residents can enter the pool by paying resident daily admission or by purchasing a season pass. For daily admission, you will need to present a Kirkwood
Parks and Recreation-issued ID card. No other form of ID will be accepted. Resident ID cards are $5 each, both for originals and replacements, and they are good for up to three years. To obtain an ID CARD, each purchaser 16 and older must present a valid and current Missouri Driver's License, showing resident address, and a current utility (gas, water, electric, phone) bill, bank statement or voter ID card, issued to their home address within the last three months. Purchasers age 15 and under must be accompanied by a person living at the same address who can present these documents. Everyone 4 and over MUST have an ID card. Each ID card holder will be allowed up to four guests per day, with a maximum allowance of 16 guests per family per day. All guests will pay the nonresident guest daily admission fees.

PLEASE check your ID card's expiration date. All cards that expired in 2013 must be renewed this year, with the above-mentioned documents.

NONRESIDENTS (anyone who does not live in Kirkwood, Glendale, or Oakland) - NEW: In addition to entering the pool as a guest of a resident, nonresidents (NR) may purchase a NR ID card or a NR season pass. The NR ID card costs $30 per year per person and will allow the nonresident to pay the NR daily fee of $8. NR season passes cost $120 for youth (4-17), $145 for an adult (18-64), $120 for a senior citizen (65+), and $315 for a family of three (each additional family member costs $30). To obtain a NR ID card, each purchaser 16 and older must present a valid, current Missouri Driver's License showing current address. Purchases age 15 and younger must be accompanied by a person living at the same address who can present the documents listed above. Everyone 4 and older must have an ID card. Each ID card will be allowed up to four guests per day, with a maximum allowance of 16 guests per family per day. All guests will pay the nonresident guest daily admission fee.

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK!

HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SPRING!

Happy first day of spring!  It is hard to believe with the weather we have had this winter, but we are in a drought situation.  We are almost two inches behind on rainfall.  Take time on the days with temperatures above freezing to water your trees, shrubs, and perennials.  Also take a look for any damage the winter storms may have caused.  Trim away any broken, cracked or stripped areas of trees or shrubs.

The Kirkwood Garden Club periodically shares a Gardening Tip of the Week with Happenings' readers.  For more information about the Club, visit their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org New members and guests, both men and women, are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.

THE CITY NEEDS CITIZEN INPUT
BIKE-WALK SURVEY:
The City of Kirkwood, in partnership with Trailnet, is developing a Pedestrian-Bicycle Master Plan in 2014. The Kirkwood Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan will provide a blueprint for the development of pedestrian and bicycle improvements throughout the community, making it safer and easier to reach local destinations, including parks, schools, transit, and commercial areas. As part of this process, the City is seeking input from residents, in the form of this very quick survey. It should only take five to ten minutes to complete.  Your time and input is greatly appreciated. Click here to take the survey:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KirkwoodMO

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
FIRST DAY OF SPRING!  Do I hear a collective sigh of relief?  I have started working on my garden and yard.  We added a retaining wall along our driveway this week and did some much needed trenching and water drainage work in the backyard, and we pulled out a bunch of stuff that had pretty much died due to the drought conditions of the last two years (see Cathy's note above in "Garden Tips" about watering). You have only to visit one of our two big rivers to see that we are still in a drought, despite the heavy snows of this past season. We are hearing, from the State Department of Emergency Management, that they expect a very wet spring, which would be good for our gardens, but might result in some serious flooding.  Never a dull day...

Speaking of spring, if you follow the City on Facebook or Twitter, you may have noticed three or four (and sometimes five) road closing notices every day recently.  Good weather means road repairs, so please be on the look out for our guys out in the roadway, and if you want to be prepared before you head out, check out our Facebook page each morning (if you only do Twitter, the notices get pushed there as well).  Most notices are up by 8:30 a.m. at the latest.

As we edge closer to May, there are several things coming up.  First, if you have a house or building you would like to nominate for the Favorite Buildings Awards program, please read all about it and download the nomination form here.  On that same page of the Website, you can also click on the link to the Bike-Walk Survey, which many of you (almost 200) have already taken (THANK YOU!).  And on the City's Blog, Kirkwood Library's Chelsea Bedley this week wrote about getting your child ready for kindergarten - which may be on the minds of you readers with preschoolers at home.  Read about that here.

Finally, Local Government Week is coming up May 5-9, and while we haven't decided yet what kinds of programs we will create to observe this, I have been thinking a lot lately about government and public service, which kind of runs in my family.  My mother worked for a municipal utility late in her life, and my grandmother worked in county government, for the Pollution Control Office back in the 1960s.  Two of my great-grandfathers worked in public service too.  In the photo, that's my great-grandfather Fred Von Behren, who was a streetcar conductor around the turn of the century (that would be 20th).  Another great-grandfather worked as a gaslighter around the same time. I heard stories growing up about how he walked the blocks of the city putting out the gas lights in the evening.  Of course, they probably worked for private companies rather than local governments (apparently there were TEN streetcar companies in St. Louis in 1900 - read about the Strike of 1900 here), but it was fascinating to find this photo in my father's collection (identified, but no date).

This is all on my mind as we say goodbye this week to two of Kirkwood's best public servants.  Our Fire Chief, Tom Openlander, is retiring, and so is our Chief Administrative Officer Mike Brown.  Please feel free to stop by City Hall next Wednesday, March 26, between 3:30 and 5:00 p.m., to say goodbye to Mike at a farewell reception for him.

My Weather Channel app says temperatures should be in the 40s and 50s this weekend, with no chance of rain...until Monday (and maybe even some snow showers on Tuesday, but they've been wrong before!).  Have a great weekend, and see you next Thursday!
