MIKE BROWN COMES TO KIRKWOOD: Mike Brown came to work for the City of Kirkwood in 1981.  He was hired to be the City Administrative Director / City Clerk, at a time when the City was still under a Commissioner form of government.  By 1984, the Kirkwood City Council and City residents had voted to adopt a new City Charter and the Council / Manager form of government.  The 1984 City Council then selected Mike to be the City's first (and so far only) Chief Administrative Officer. Mike Brown announced late last year that he would retire at the end of March, and we are now getting closer to that date.  Tomorrow night, a community-wide retirement party will be held in his honor, and over the next several weeks, there will be a few other small gatherings as well.  In the course of pulling together a slide show for this week's event, we found this clipping of a 1981 Webster-Kirkwood Times article. It is one of a very few photos of Mike during his mustache period.

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK!

SPRING IS ON THE WAY!

As the snow melts, take a look around your yard and gardens.  You may be surprised to see daffodils and tulips breaking through the soil.  Surprise lilies in my yard are also starting to emerge.  Although more cold weather may be coming our way, it shouldn't impact the flowering of these plants.  At most you may have some leaves that brown at the tips.  Spring really is on the way!

The Kirkwood Garden Club periodically shares a Gardening Tip of the Week with Happenings' readers.  For more information about the Club, visit their Website at KirkwoodGardenClub.org New members and guests, both men and women, are always welcome to attend their meetings and events.  Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
My T.I.L.T. (Things I love on Thursday)... Putting the fun, final finishing touches on the slideshow for Mike Brown's retirement party tomorrow night, sunshine, meeting today with other public information officers from around the state and sharing ideas, taking a day of vacation tomorrow to go thrift-shopping (and to just putz around the house), waiting patiently for my daffodils and tulips to emerge, working with the new Kirkwood Arts & Culture Commission (more on that below), anticipating (salivating over) all the great things St. Louis has to offer in the spring: Fresh strawberries, baseball (Opening Day is 32 days away), tennis, outdoor walks, the Zoo and Botanical Gardens, barbecue, sitting outside at dusk and listening to the sounds of spring.

The Kirkwood Arts & Culture Commission:  The Commission has now met twice, and they are busy planning ways to promote the arts and culture in Kirkwood.  This newest City Commission consists of the following volunteer members:  Agnes Garino, Terry Sibbitts, Zoe Perkins, Mary Hanson, Judy Roberts, and Jim Weidman, along with the mayor (Council liaison) and yours truly (staff liaison).  Tentative plans include developing promotional materials and hosting a booth at the Greentree Festival.  Stay tuned...

I hope you can get out this weekend and enjoy the warming temperatures - in the 50s most of the weekend.   Don't forget that Daylight Savings Time starts this Sunday morning - spring forward an hour - and it's a good time to change the batteries in your smoke alarms too.

See you next Thursday!
