GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK!

SEED STARTING INDOORS!

Get a head start on spring by starting some seeds indoors.  This requires grow lights that can be adjusted in height.  Use potting mix to start the seeds in a clean six pack, or an egg carton.  Any small, shallow container with a drainage hole will work.  Plant the seed half the depth of the soil, then mist with water.  Place directly under the grow light.  Keep the seeds moist and warm.  As they begin to sprout, raise the grow light to allow for their growth.  Transplant to larger containers as the plants grow.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
IT'S MARY HANSON WEEK IN KIRKWOOD.  Okay, not really, but it probably seems that way.  Kirkwood resident Mary Hanson has an exhibit of her paintings on display at Kirkwood Public Library, with an opening reception tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m., and she is the creative talent behind the design of the stl250 cake sculpture now on display at the Kirkwood Train Station.  I took this photo of her in her home right after she had finished painting the cake.  I especially liked how she turned the icing on the sculpture into a tree canopy, which is kind of perfect for the Greentree City.  But don't take my word for it - drive by the station and see it for yourself!  (While you're at it - be sure to check out this week's KPL blogger on All Aboard -- the library's director, Sarah Erwin!)

In other news... On this day (Feb. 20) in 1865, the City of Kirkwood was granted its charter by the state of Missouri:  Happy Charter Anniversary!! [Source: Vintage St. Louis]

My T.I.L.T. (Things I Love on Thursday) for today: The Artists' Boutique coming up next weekend (March 1 & 2) at the Community Center; warm weather, even if it's rainy warm weather; Manor Grove's "Soup's On!" this Friday, on the Meramec campus (Mayor McDonnell is a judge); the City's Salt Dome, photo below (taken by Street Supervisor Doug Thrasher), which has been refilled after this winter's larger-than-normal usage of salt, and that's not something you can say for New York City - their salt order is stuck in Maine!

Have a great weekend. Stay warm, and see you next Thursday!
