Sanitation News for February
Happy Valentine's Day!

WASHINGTON'S BIRTHDAY:  Washington's Birthday, also known as Presidents' Day, is February 17.  This is not a sanitation holiday.  City offices will be closed, but sanitation will be collected normally.  So please remember to place your cart, yard waste, and trash curbside by 6:00 a.m. on your regular day that week.  NOTE:  If you can't remember whether or not a specific holiday will affect sanitation collection, there will always be a recorded message on the sanitation phone line prior to and during the week of holidays.  Call 822-5828. Thank you.

BAD WEATHER MAY SLOW US DOWN:  On a snowy or icy day, we may be late getting to your household, but we will get there.  Please leave your cart and bags out until we get there.  If your sanitation has not been collected by the next day, give us a call and let us know.  Mistakes do happen.  Call:  822-5828.

YARD WASTE IS COLLECTED YEAR-ROUND:  We received several calls about this over the past few weeks.  Yes, please put your yard waste out any month of the year.  For information about cost and how to put it, please visit this page of the City's Website.  In bad weather, we may leave yard waste bags to be collected at a later date, maybe even a week later, but feel free to leave the yard waste bag at the curb until we can get to it.  (We apologize if this information is redundant, but we continue to get calls and questions.  Thank you for your patience.)

Recycling Tip of the Month

Why is a CD Jewel Case (a #7 plastic) not recyclable? - thank you to Elizabeth Shands for this question.

The automated separation equipment used for container recycling cannot recognize non-container types of #7 material. This applies to all plastics; just because it is plastic does not mean that the equipment can effectively process the material.

For example, a child's plastic slide from a play set is plastic, but it cannot be run through the processing facility. The jewel cases would probably be ejected by the optic sorting equipment and then be sent into the waste stream.

Pizza Boxes:  We get a lot of questions about recycling pizza boxes.  Most pizza boxes contain a lot of food residue.  If the pizza box is fairly clean (some restaurants line them with waxed paper), the whole thing can be recycled.  If the bottom is greasy, however, you can tear off the top of the box and recycle it, and place the greasy part in your regular trash.
