HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Thank you to Keith Davis for this wonderful photo, taken over City Hall during the Winter Fireworks Festival on December 27.   Keith was a 40-year City employee (Street Department) at his retirement in 2003.  If you have a great photo of the Fireworks and would like to share, please send it to the editor (by hitting "reply").
SIGN UP NOW FOR THIS FRIDAY'S BLOOD DRIVE!
GIVE BLOOD, AND BE ENTERED TO WIN A SNOW BLOWER!
Blood Drive this Friday, January 10, at City Hall

Record cold temperatures, high wind, and blowing snow have led to a significant decrease in the number of blood donations being made so far this week. But patients at local hospitals will need blood transfusions in spite of the weather. That's why we're taking steps to increase donations even though it's very cold.

With the blood supply already low due to the holidays, the donation rate must improve to ensure the blood supply remains adequate for area hospitals. Blood is used, for example, in the treatment of cancer, heart disease and trauma: All potentially life-threatening situations that occur at the same rate no matter what the weather may be like.

To thank donors who are able to give blood in spite of weather conditions, the Blood Center will enter everyone who presents to give blood between now and Sunday, January 12, in a drawing for a snow blower valued at $300 (or an equivalent gift card). The entry will apply to all Donor Centers and mobile blood drives through Jan. 12.

SO please join us at City Hall this Friday, January 10, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The blood drive (sponsored by Kirkwood Police and Fire Departments) will be held in the Mobile Blood-Drive Van, which will be parked on West Madison, next to the Police Department.  The van is provided by Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center, our partner for this drive. Donors can sign up online here:  https://www.bloodcenterimpact.org/index.cfm?group=op&step=2&opid=50578

Before donating:  Eat well, hydrate, and bring a photo ID. THANK YOU.
HOLIDAY INFORMATION AND CLOSURES IN DECEMBER

CITY OFFICES CLOSED ON MARTIN LUTHER KING'S BIRTHDAY

City Hall and most City offices will be closed on Monday, January 20, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday.  There will be no sanitation collection, and all routes will be delayed by a day all week.

SANITATION NEWS

Holidays:   The new sanitation holiday schedule for 2014 has been posted here: http://www.kirkwoodmo.org/content/City-Departments/1914/sanitation.aspx#Holidays

Other Changes:  Effective immediately, all bulky pick-ups will be done on FRIDAYS.  This means that if you have a major appliance, piece of furniture, or other bulky or large item that you need picked up, you will need to call by Thursday at noon, for collection on the following day.  Call 822-5828 to arrange bulky pick-ups.

Christmas Trees:  Kirkwood Sanitation will collect Christmas trees throughout the month of January at no cost to you.  Just place the tree near your regular trash and recycling (leave about three feet of space in between).  Beginning February 1, a yard waste sticker will need to be attached.

Christmas Lights:  You can drop off your old lights at the Scheidegger Recycling Depository through January 12.

In Bad Weather:  We WILL get your trash and recycling picked up.  It may be late in the day, but we will get it.  Please don't move it off the street.  However, we may not collect yard waste or Christmas trees until the weather is better and roads are clearer.  The forecast is for warmer weather next week, so if we don't get your yard waste or Christmas tree this week, we will pick it up next week.
ART AT THE STATION RECEPTION POSTPONED

RECEPTION RESCHEDULED FOR JANUARY 16

Due to the severe weather, the Kirkwood Area Arts Council has rescheduled the reception for its January exhibit. The oil and acrylic paintings of Judith Polys are featured now through February 3.  Please join us for the rescheduled opening reception on Thursday, January 16, 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Train Station, located at the corner of Argonne and South Kirkwood Road. Exhibits and receptions are free and open to the public.  Donations are welcome.  Art may be viewed when the Station is open for passengers.

SALT'S EFFECTS ON YOUR PLANTS - GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK!

BE CAREFUL WITH SALT!

With lots of snow already here and more forecast to come, a word of caution if you use salt on your sidewalks and driveways.  Care should be taken if using salt near your lawn or gardens.  Salt can easily kill your grass and plants before spring arrives.  It will also sterilize your soil, making it harder to get anything to grow.  An alternative to salt is sand or kitty litter (the non-clumping variety).  They don't have the melting properties but are a safe alternative for traction.  Spring is just around the corner!

NEWS FROM MODOT
I-70 DOWNTOWN CLOSED THIS WEEKEND

The Missouri Department of Transportation will close all lanes of I-70 downtown between Pine Street and the Poplar Street Bridge starting at 8 p.m. Friday, January 17, weather permitting.  Motorists are advised to use I-64, I-55 or I-44 to get into and out of downtown during the I-70 closure. All lanes are projected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, January 20.

Crews will be demolishing the Walnut Street Bridge as part of preparations for the CityArchRiver Park Over the Highway project.

The detour for the eastbound interstate closure will be to take the Pine Street exit, follow southbound Memorial Drive and get on either the Poplar Street Bridge or I-55/I-44. The detour for the westbound interstate will be to exit onto northbound Memorial Drive and continue on 3rd Street to the ramp to westbound I-70 at the Martin Luther King Bridge.

The Eads Bridge will also be closed while the interstate is closed to ensure that interstate traffic moves smoothly.

Walnut Street over the interstate is scheduled to be closed after morning rush on Friday, January 17.  It will remain closed until early April as crews build a wider bridge. Detours will be marked for people heading to the Old Cathedral while Walnut Street over I-70 is closed. This work is part of the overall improvements to access between downtown and the interstate as part of the Park Over the Highway project. Crews will continue to work around Memorial Drive and the interstate ramps near Pine this winter and spring. It is a portion of CityArchRiver 2015, a transformational project that will enhance the Gateway Arch experience for all visitors. The project will create a seamless park experience from the city to the Mississippi River, providing visitors with a more vibrant and safer place to visit, enjoy, and return. This work will not significantly impact access to the Gateway Arch, which remains open during construction.

WHEW...WHAT A WEEK!

My first working week of the new year has been a busy one.  While City Hall was closed on Monday, I was at home working my phone and iPad to answer residents' emails and to post helpful information on Facebook and on the City Website.  In the middle of that, I spent an hour, in -3 degree
My Handiwork
weather, cleaning off my car and shoveling my driveway and walks.  We have a long driveway, so the big thing we learned from this snow is:  We need to park closer to the road so we have less driveway to shovel.  Or we need to buy a snow blower (the jury is still out).

I hope your shoveling was not as hard as mine and your week not as busy.  As I was shoveling on Monday, I kept thinking: It's going to be in the 40s next week!  This too shall pass.  And what I'm reading today is tomorrow it will get up to 46, and it's supposed to rain much of the day on Friday, so literally 48 hours from now, most of the snow we've been battling so hard all week to move will be gone.

I want to take a few seconds here to thank all the kind residents who sent us emails and left us comments on Facebook about the great jobs our street crews did this week.  I have compiled them all into a document for the guys to read (when they are finished clearing off today's snow).  When they have recovered from this week's hard work, I hope they will enjoy reading it.  While I'm at it, Assistant Fire Chief Leo Meyer wants me to thank all the residents and businesses who dropped off gifts of food to the three fire houses over the holidays. Our firefighters loved the gifts and love knowing they are appreciated. Thank you.

If you have the time tomorrow to stop by and give blood, please sign up today (link above in the article).  With the bad weather this week, blood donations are down, so your contribution would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Another reminder - if you are planning to attend the Daddy/Daughter Dance on January 31, don't wait to sign up.  It fills up very quickly. You can call 822-5855 to register.

That's all for now.  Have a great and WARM weekend.  See you next Thursday.
