PICTURE OF THE WEEK:  New Railroad Fence

Despite the snow and freezing temperatures, workers successfully installed a new fence on the south side of the railroad tracks in downtown Kirkwood in December. The fence, along with signs posted earlier this year, is intended to keep pedestrians off the tracks and safe.

DOWNTOWN KIRKWOOD WINTER FIREWORKS FESTIVAL
THE FIREWORKS START AT 6:30 P.M.

The Downtown Kirkwood Winter Fireworks Festival returns this year due to popular demand and is scheduled to be held on Saturday, December 28, in Downtown Kirkwood.

FireworksBefore the fireworks display, local musical group Project 324 will perform at 5:00 p.m., at Station Plaza.  At 6:00 p.m., the colorful Shaolin Lohan Pai Lion Dance Troupe will make an appearance as a large Chinese dragon, accompanied by drummers, meandering from Argonne to Station Plaza.

At 6:30 p.m., the fireworks will begin, over the Downtown area and City Hall.  (Our apologies for leaving the time out of the bulletin on Monday!).

In the event of bad weather - ice, snow, or windy conditions:  The fireworks will be  postponed.  There are several ways to find out.   Visit downtownkirkwood.com, for special event information.  Call their hotline at 314-822-0084, ext. 4.  Check the City's Website at kirkwoodmo.org.  And, of course, we will post the information on the City's Facebook page.

The following streets will be closed for this event: Kirkwood Road, from Argonne to West Madison, West Madison, the 100 block of East Argonne, and a portion of the 100 block of West Argonne. Northbound traffic on Kirkwood Road will be diverted to Taylor Avenue.  Southbound traffic on Kirkwood Road will be diverted to Clay Avenue, until spectators have dispersed. Due to a private party, the Kirkwood Train Station will be closed to the public. Parking will be available in public lots and at the Station Plaza garage.

The Festival is hosted by the City of Kirkwood and the Downtown Kirkwood Special Business District and is underwritten by private donations, including: Simmons First National Bank, Des Peres Hospital, Riggs Construction & Design, Hardy Washington Jr., State Farm Agent, Billy G's Kirkwood, Spencer's Grill, Kirkwood Station Restaurant and Brewing Company, Gaffner Realty, Barb & Jim Byerly, Barbara and Art McDonnell, Bert Forde, and Dave White.

VOTE EARLY AND OFTEN - THROUGH JANUARY 3
IT'S A CAKE WALK!  VOTE FOR THE KIRKWOOD TRAIN STATION
Have you heard about this? The City of Saint Louis turns 250 years old next year, and there is a project afoot to celebrate 50 places in and around St. Louis that best represent our  Train Station in Snow
region to the world - the 50 "quintessential" places.  Giant Birthday Cake sculptures will be installed at all 50 sites, and Kirkwood's very own Historic Train Station is in the running.  YOU CAN VOTE to make it happen.  In fact, you can vote EVERY DAY from now until January 3. Please spread the word to your neighbors and friends - vote for the Kirkwood Train Station!  Here's the link - the Train Station is under "Landmark Sites":
GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK
WHAT TO DO WITH THAT CHRISTMAS TREE??!!

After Christmas, your live tree can be moved outside and be redecorated for the birds. Anchor the tree in a bucket full of damp sand. Put on strings of popcorn and cranberries. Apples, oranges, leftover breads and pine cones covered with peanut butter and then dipped in birdseed can also be added. For best results, push the edible ornaments well into the tree.

NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS, ANYONE??

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!  Do you make yearly resolutions at this time of year?  It's hard not to see the start of a new year as a new beginning and a jump start to better habits, new challenges, and goals we've been quietly mulling over in our heads for months.  Almost everyone I know resolves to start working out more in January, and most fitness clubs can attest to that:  They are busy on January 2, starting to get a little less so by February 2, and back to normal by March 2:  Oh how quickly resolutions fade.

I do hope to lose some weight in the coming new year, but I see that mostly as a consequence of my other big goal for 2014:  Training for a half marathon.  It's not until October, so I have some time.  I'm starting two new fitness classes too:  One is a core fusion class, which I really need, but the other one is more for fun.  I'm signing up for an Electric Slide class.  No, I will not be taking any pictures, but I'll let you know how it goes. What new things are you all trying out in the new year?  If you want to share your resolutions, just reply to this newsletter.

If you're looking for some ways to cut through the doldrums of January AND get back in shape, be sure to check out the Boot Camp class or the Zumba class, both with new sessions starting January 6 at the Community Center.  Both are offered through Kirkwood's Parks & Recreation department.  Call 822-5855 for details or register online at kirkwoodmo.org/recreation.  Of course, now that the longest day of the year is behind us, we have SPRING to look forward to.  Spring/Summer Parks & Recreation Program Guides get mailed out January 30!

That's all for now.  There will be no edition of Happenings next week, but look for the next edition in the new year - on January 9.  I wish you all a peaceful and safe new year!
