PICTURE OF THE WEEK:  Cakeway to the West!

Have you heard about this? The City of Saint Louis turns 250 years old next year, and there is a project afoot to celebrate 50 places in and around St. Louis that best represent our region to the world - the 50 "quintessential"
places.  Giant Birthday Cake sculptures will be installed at all 50 sites, and Kirkwood's very own Historic Train Station is in the running.  YOU CAN VOTE to make it happen.  In fact, you can vote EVERY DAY from now until January 3. Please spread the word to your neighbors and friends - vote for the Kirkwood Train Station!  Here's the link:

DOWNTOWN KIRKWOOD WINTER FIREWORKS FESTIVAL
THE FIREWORKS START AT 6:30 P.M.

The Downtown Kirkwood Winter Fireworks Festival returns this year due to popular demand and is scheduled to be held on Saturday, December 28, in Downtown Kirkwood. Before the fireworks display, local musical group Project 324 will perform at 5:00 p.m., at Station Plaza.  At 6:00 p.m., the colorful Shaolin Lohan Pai Lion Dance Troupe will make an appearance as a large Chinese dragon, accompanied by drummers, meandering from Argonne to Station Plaza.  At 6:30 p.m., the fireworks will begin, over the Downtown area and City Hall.  (Our apologies for leaving the time out of the bulletin on Monday!).

In the event of bad weather - ice, snow, or windy conditions:  The fireworks will be Winter Fireworks postponed.  There are several ways to find out.   Visit downtownkirkwood.com, for special event information.  Call their hotline at 314-822-0084, ext. 4.  Check the City's Website at kirkwoodmo.org.  And, of course, we will post the information on the City's Facebook page.

The following streets will be closed for this event: Kirkwood Road, from Argonne to West Madison, West Madison, the 100 block of East Argonne, and a portion of the 100 block of West Argonne. Northbound traffic on Kirkwood Road will be diverted to Taylor Avenue.  Southbound traffic on Kirkwood Road will be diverted to Clay Avenue, until spectators have dispersed. Due to a private party, the Kirkwood Train Station will be closed to the public. Parking will be available in public lots and at the Station Plaza garage.

The Festival is hosted by the City of Kirkwood and the Downtown Kirkwood Special Business District and is underwritten by private donations, including: Simmons First National Bank, Des Peres Hospital, Riggs Construction & Design, Hardy Washington Jr., State Farm Agent, Billy G's Kirkwood, Spencer's Grill, Kirkwood Station Restaurant and Brewing Company, Gaffner Realty, Barb & Jim Byerly, Barbara and Art McDonnell, Bert Forde, and Dave White.

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK
HOLIDAY PLANTS AND EVERGREEN TREES

If you are bringing home holiday plants, make sure they are protected from the cold weather.  Tropicals such as poinsettias are very susceptible to cold temperatures.  Take newspaper and paper bags with you when you purchase a plant.  Wrap them carefully and bag them for the trip home.  Once in the house, let them acclimate to the new temperature before sticking them in a sunny window.  Avoid placing them by a heat register.

Holiday evergreen trees do well if left in a garage in a bucket of water until it is time to bring indoors.  Again, let them acclimate before stringing lights and decorating.  Happy Holidays.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
WHEN THE EDITOR GETS THINGS WRONG...
So last week, I completely forgot to include in this newsletter anything at all about the Winter Fireworks, which as you can see from the story above, are just a little over a week away.  To make up for that, I sent out a special Bulletin this past Monday, which was great except for one little thing:  Amidst all the details for that evening, I completely forgot to include the TIME the fireworks actually begin (6:30 p.m.).  Also in last week's newsletter, I referenced a sanitation story in the "Holiday Information" article that wasn't there.  (It's here today!)  Please Note:  If you are affected by these sanitation changes, you should get or should have received a letter THIS WEEK. You will also receive a door hanger reminder on January 2 or 3.

Sometimes there are just so many details to get right.  I sincerely apologize for these mistakes and hope you had a chuckle over them (what was she thinking?). Please know, however, that any time you need information that I have left out, you can probably find it on the Website, or you can just give me a call (822-5894).  I sincerely thank the four readers who contacted me to let me know about these mistakes.  I can't correct information if I don't know I got it wrong.  Thank you.

Are you ready for the Christmas and New Year's holidays?  This weekend will be the first one this month where I haven't had an event or a party to attend.  I might just get caught up on my wrapping, and I'm really hoping to get a little extra sleep, although on Friday night, I will be staying up late to watch Darlene Love make her annual appearance on Late Night with David Letterman.  In what has become something of a tradition, she shows up each year, just before the holiday, to sing "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)."

Next week, we take off for a family visit in New Jersey.  We have planned a day in Manhattan (because you can only spend so much time with family), with stops at the 9/11 Memorial and the Museum of Modern Art for a Magritte exhibit (which will be coming to the Art Institute in Chicago next year if you are interested). After a hectic holiday season, I am looking forward to some rest and some fun. Safe Travels to all of you who are traveling over the next few weeks.

Holiday Bonus: Be on the look-out for a "Super Moon" on January 1.  What a great way to usher in the new year!  Read about it here.

That's all for now.  There WILL be an edition of Happenings next week on December 26, but no issue on January 2.  I wish you all a beautiful and stress-free Christmas.  See you next Thursday!
