PICTURE OF THE WEEK:  Santa Visits City Council

Santa stopped by the December 5 Kirkwood City Council meeting to provide some holiday cheer and to congratulate former Kirkwood Mayor Herb Jones (right) on his 80th birthday.  Kirkwood City Council and Mayor Art McDonnell (rear) proclaimed December 16 "Herbert Shouse Jones Day in the City of Kirkwood" in recognition of his many contributions to the City.  Herb and his wife Mary have three children and six grandchildren.  Herb has served as Commissioner of Safety on the City Council (1972 to 1976), Chair of the Downtown Business District Commission, Chair of the Kirkwood-Des Peres Area Chamber of Commerce (1996), Mayor of Kirkwood (1984 to 1992), and most recently as Chair of the Memorial Walkway Committee. He received the Citizen of the Year Award in 1977, a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005, and was elected to the first Kirkwood High School Alumni Hall of Fame in 2010.

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK
"FORCING" BULBS THIS MONTH

You can have blooming flowers for the holidays by "forcing" paper white bulbs.  Using a 3"-4" deep dish, line the bottom with gravel or marbles.  Place bulbs on top and then add a few more marbles, etc., to secure the bulbs.  Add water to the base of the bulb (not over the bulb).  Check water daily to keep the level at the base of the bulb.  When you see roots appear, move to a sunny window.  Keep the water level at the base of the bulb.  When the flowers bloom, move to diffused light to help the flowers last longer.  One caution about paper whites:  They have a very strong aroma, so you might want to limit the number of bulbs you force.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
MY T.I.L.T. (Things I Love on Thursday) FOR TODAY:
Getting my Christmas letter done, finishing up holiday shopping, shopping LOCALLY, going to lots of fun holiday parties and lunches, running three miles at the gym because of all of those parties and lunches, the magical way Kirkwood and all of St. Louis light up the night skies with Christmas lights, baking cookies for next week's office holiday lunch, trying my hand at forcing bulbs (per Cathy Reber's instructions above), allowing myself to buy dinner at the grocery store instead of making it because I am so...worn...out...

That's all for now.  Have a great weekend, and see you next Thursday!
