February 2013 snowstorm in Downtown Kirkwood

Winter weather is slated to arrive today.  Here is a note from the Missouri Department of Transportation.

From MoDOT:  Missourians may see their first widespread winter event this week, as accumulating snow and ice are forecast for much of the state on Thursday and Friday.  The Missouri Department of Transportation is carefully monitoring weather forecasts and preparing to plow and treat state routes as needed. Travelers should also take their own precautions, as the first bout of snow or ice means motorists' winter driving skills may be a bit rusty.

Remember that even light precipitation can cause roads to become slick with ice or snow. While MoDOT works hard to treat and plow Missouri highways when winter weather hits, it's important to allow extra time for travel and to check road conditions before you head out. Remember the following tips when driving in inclement weather:

  • Slow down.
  • Steer and brake gently.
  • Accelerate slowly at intersections.
  • Allow extra space between your vehicle and the one ahead of you.
  • Stay back 100 feet from snow plows that may be spreading salt. Avoid passing snow plows, even when on a multi-lane road.
  • Be aware that bridges and overpasses generally experience freezing conditions first.
One of the best ways to prepare for winter travel is to check road conditions before you go. MoDOT's Traveler Information Map, at modot.org, provides current road conditions for Missouri's interstates and major highways. Conditions for these routes are color coded to give you the information you need at a glance.
For smartphone and tablet users, the Traveler Information App brings the same information to mobile devices. The app is available for free from the iPhone and Android app stores by searching for "MoDOT."
FROM THE KIRKWOOD STREET DEPARTMENT
SNOW / BAD WEATHER PREPARATIONS UNDER WAY

The Kirkwood Street Department is preparing vehicles and crews for possible snow operations this week.  In the event of bad weather:

~  Please move all parked cars off the roadway and out of cul-de-sacs.  This will ensure the plow operator will be able to plow your street.

~ Avoid unnecessary driving; let the snow plows clear the roads.

~ Remember that one street will get plowed first; one will be last.  Please be patient. (See "Plowing Order" below)

~ Plow operators do not put snow on your driveway on purpose; it just happens. No Snowballs Please!

PLOWING ORDER:  THERE IS A METHOD TO THE MADNESS

When snow falls, City plowing crews focus first on the main roads, such as Kirkwood Road, Geyer Road, Essex, Woodlawn, Woodbine, Couch, etc.   Cleaning these streets first allows emergency vehicles to get through when needed. During this first stage, street crews also work on hills and bridges. Crews do not begin to work on secondary streets until the snow stops. Secondary streets include Taylor, Fillmore, Dickson, Quan, Rose Hill, Clay, Lindeman, Harrison, Peeke, and Ann. When all those are done, crews move to subdivision streets and clear those. PRE-TREATING: When possible, crews pre-treat all City streets when a storm has been predicted. However, in some storms, when the temperatures are very low, pretreating may not work very well.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
IT'S CHRISTMAS LETTER TIME!!
Yes, I am one of those pathetic people who writes a yearly Christmas letter.  I started doing  this about 10 years ago when it occurred to me that as a writer, I should keep a journal and write a Christmas letter.  I never managed to start a journal (although I do now write a personal blog), but the Christmas letter tradition took hold and has not let go.  Mostly I fill mine with photos of my kids and my travels, but I try to wrap it around a theme. The best one I ever did was the "The Year of Moving On," which I wrote the year my daughter started college. This year, I think I'm going with a "Keep Calm, and..." theme.

Keeping calm during the holidays can be a real challenge.  In addition to family parties, school programs, and invitations from friends, there are so many festive concerts, theatre events, and holiday programs from which to choose, not to mention sandwiching in some shopping here and there.  It can be overwhelming. I hope the lists in this newsletter help you to plan, have fun, and...keep calm.

Louise Marcolla, our ever-calm Community Center Office Manager, sent me all her December concert and theatre listings this morning (see story above), and she has a lot of fun stuff coming up in January, when we hit the doldrums period.  Also, be on the lookout in January for the 2014 Calendar of Events and Dates to Remember, in your utility bills starting the first week of the new year.

That's all for now.  Have a great weekend, and see you next Thursday!
