| Greetings! |
PHOTO OF THE WEEK: In this edition of Weekly Happenings, we honor Jo Dawson (above, middle) who retired this week from her position as Police Dispatcher after 37 years with the City. We are especially lucky in Kirkwood to have employees who spend their entire careers with the City, and it is not unusual to see them retire with 30+ and even 40+ years of service. Thank you, Jo, for your service. (Pictured with Jo at her retirement party: Sharon Smith, police clerk, left, and Bill Boaz, another retiree, right).

GARDENER'S CORNER

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK, FROM THE KIRKWOOD GARDEN CLUB
As the weather and the ground cools, it is a great time to plant spring flowering bulbs. Tulips, daffodils, and crocus are just some of the choices available. Follow the package directions for the proper depth of the bulb to be planted. Squirrels can be a pest since they like to dig up the bulbs you plant. One trick is to plant your bulbs and then cover with some landscape fabric and top with some mulch. Remove the landscape fabric in January. The other option is to keep an eye out for bulbs that have been dug up and just replant. You'll lose some in the process, so you may want to buy a few extra. As with any newly planted material, water well after planting.
The Kirkwood Garden Club will periodically share a Gardening Tip of the Week with Weekly Happenings readers. For more information about the club, visit their Website at kirkwoodgardenclub.org. New members and guests - both men and women - are always welcome to attend their meetings and events. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., at the Kirkwood Community Center.

BENEFITS OF STREET TREES
| |
WE NEED YOUR TREE PLANTING IDEAS
Having trees on the street and in right-of-way areas is a great way to provide cooling shade for on-street parking, which reduces the heat island effect and auto emissions and can help with stormwater runoff. Click here to visit the Urban Forestry Commission page on the City's Website, and then scroll down and click on the "Benefits of Street Trees" document to learn more.
Why is this important? On that same page, you can also click on the Street Tree Request Form to request that a tree be planted in the right-of-way (ROW) in front of your house. Kirkwood's City Council and Urban Forestry Commission are working together to purchase new street trees, but they want your ideas and feedback on where the trees should be planted. Follow the directions on the form. Thank you!

I guess you can tell that Fall is my favorite time of year. THIS weekend, I'll be at the Chamber's First Annual Mini Golf Tournament, so if you're going, be sure to say hi!
