| Greetings! |
PHOTO OF THE WEEK:
It's hydrant-flushing time! Kirkwood Water employees flushed this hydrant at Chopin and Dougherty Ferry last week. We annually flush nearly all of the City's 1200 hydrants. Flushing the fire hydrants keeps them in good operational condition. It helps to ensure adequate water flow and water pressure, and it helps to remove sediment in order to maintain water clarity and quality in the distribution pipes.
Have you taken a really great photograph of something or someone in Kirkwood recently? Your editor would love to use it in the newsletter. Simply email it to Info@Kirkwoodmo.org (or just reply to this newsletter), along with a brief description and your name. Thanks!

KIRKWOOD-OAKLAND NIGHT OUT
| |
KIRKWOOD "DAY OUT" AT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT: OCTOBER 5
Historically, the National Night Out has been hosted by police departments across the country on the first Tuesday in August. Several years ago, however, the Cities of Kirkwood and Oakland decided to move their Night Out event to October, when weather conditions are more suitable for an outdoor event. This year, it will be held at the Kirkwood Police Department during the day on Saturday, October 5, from Noon until 4:00 p.m. The PD holds the "Day Out" on the parking lot between City Hall and the PD building and usually several local organizations participate. A tasty lunch is provided. This is a free event, and all Kirkwood and Oakland residents are encouraged to attend.
The Police Department wants to encourage all residents who still want to schedule their own neighborhood block party to do so at any time during the year including on the Night Out date. If you contact the Community Service Officer at 314-822-5868, arrangements can be made for both Police and Fire personnel to stop by for a visit. To set up a block party, use the form on the Website here, or call 822-5806.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
|
Happy Thursday! It's been a busy week in Kirkwood for your "information" guru. I've been working with Murray Pounds (parks & recreation director) and a small committee on a survey that will go out in mid- to late-September to randomly selected residents ("random" will ensure that it is a representative sample and statistically relevant). The survey topic is indoor recreation and asks what respondents would like to see the City develop in terms of fitness, cultural, social, and aquatic facilities, if anything. Survey results will be shared with all residents later in the year. Stay tuned.
In other information news, we just finished a new brochure on the Board of Adjustment and how it works, and we are getting ready to create new brochures on the Kirkwood Train Station (its history, how to rent it, etc.) and on the City's commercial sanitation services. I'm also working on a flyer for the Human Rights Commission's upcoming Conference in October (details above), which residents will get with their September utility bills. Ryan Spencer (zoning administrator) and I are working on a couple of different informational pieces about the proposed Manchester Road - Kirkwood Road redevelopment area and the moratorium, including a short blog post about what "permitted uses" are and how the whole zoning thing works. We should have that up for you by next week's issue (and I'll provide a link then). Our new staff liaison to the Landmarks' Commission, Amy Lowry, has been reviewing the historic preservation page on the City's Website, and we will have some new and updated information there by this time next week as well (and another link!).
A public information officer's job is never done, but it is a job I love.
A few months back, we sent a list of Frequently Asked Questions to residents as an insert to utility bills, and we asked: "Is there anything we missed? If you have a question that wasn't addressed, please let us know." So here's that question again - what would you like to know about? One resident called me this week asking that we remind residents that it is not legal to ride bicycles on the sidewalk. I checked with Captain Brian Murphy of the Kirkwood Police Department, and he said that bicycles on sidewalks are prohibited in the downtown business district. Otherwise, bicycles are not prohibited on the sidewalks, but cyclists do have to yield right-of-way to pedestrians. Good question! You can read more about that specific topic here in the Code of Ordinances. Scroll down to Chapter 4-1/2 (Bicycles) and Chapter 14 (Motor Vehicles and Traffic).
That's all for now. Have a great weekend, and see you next Thursday!
