KEEP KIRKWOOD GREEN: 50 TREES PROJECT
| |
"50 TREES 2013" SITE NOMINATIONS SOUGHT
It's that time again - time to send in nominations for planting sites for this year's donated trees. For 2013, 75 trees have been donated, and so far only 19 sites have been selected. The site nominations must adhere to planting criteria (no overhead power lines, no utility conflicts, and "tree Lawn" space or space between curb and sidewalk, that is at least four feet wide) and will be selected on a "first-come" basis. The "50 Trees" project is an initiative of Keep Kirkwood Green. (Click here to visit their new blog.) The initiative was conceived to honor the Greentree Festival's 50th anniversary in 2010 and to rekindle the mission of the first festival by planting 50 street trees throughout the City of Kirkwood. For more information, a copy of the 50 Trees brochure, or the site nomination form, visit the home page of the City's Website here: kirkwoodmo.org.

KIRKWOOD-OAKLAND NIGHT OUT
| |
KIRKWOOD "DAY OUT" AT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT: OCTOBER 5
Historically, the National Night Out has been hosted by police departments across the country on the first Tuesday in August. Several years ago, however, the Cities of Kirkwood and Oakland decided to move their Night Out event to October, when weather conditions are more suitable for an outdoor event. This year, it will be held at the Kirkwood Police Department during the day on Saturday, October 5, from Noon until 4:00 p.m. The PD holds the "Day Out" on the parking lot between City Hall and the PD building and usually several local organizations participate. A tasty lunch is provided. This is a free event, and all Kirkwood and Oakland residents are encouraged to attend.
The Police Department wants to encourage all residents who still want to schedule their own neighborhood block party to do so at any time during the year including on the Night Out date. If you contact the Community Service Officer at 314-822-5868, arrangements can be made for both Police and Fire personnel to stop by for a visit. To set up a block party, use the form on the Website here, or call 822-5806.

KIRKWOOD ELECTRIC POLE INSPECTIONS
| |
DAVEY TREE COMPANY WILL INSPECT ELECTRIC POLES THIS MONTH
Starting August 2 and continuing throughout the month, the Davey Tree company will be inspecting Kirkwood Electric poles. They will be working in neighborhoods and in some cases will need to enter backyards. Davey Tree employees will always have identification badges and identification on their cars. Residents with any questions about this can call 822-5842.

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR FALL CERT CLASS
| |
COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area. The program trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.

GARDENING TIP OF THE WEEK
|
MONARDA, ARTEMISIA, & FRIENDS:Some perennial flowers such as Monarda and Artemisia are very fast growers and will take over your garden if they get a chance. Don't be afraid to dig out parts of large clumps and share them with friends or put in the compost pile. The same is true for any plants that are past their time. If they don't look good, pull them out of your garden. Life is too short to fight with plants that are not performing.

FROM THE EDITOR: The Mini Blog
|
Happy Thursday! My T.I.L.T. (Things I Love on Thursday) for today: Getting back to a regular exercise routine despite the tendinitis in my elbow; spending time with friends and family last week at the Maple Jam Band concert in Kirkwood Park (photo, below); writing and reading (a new blog post for my personal blog and Anna Quindlen's book, "Every Last One"); seeing an old friend who has now retired (Rosalind Williams, who worked for the City of Kirkwood for 20 years but who I met and worked with at City of Ferguson prior to coming here); figuring out how to order a Starbucks peppermint mocha with fewer calories (skim milk, no whipped cream, and four pumps instead of eight!); making a promise to myself and my readers to write with fewer parenthetical statements...oyI almost added to that list: Playing with my new Samsung S4 cell phone, but really, that's not something I "love" so much as tolerate. I do have the City's Facebook and Twitter accounts finally added on, however, so here is my semi-irregular reminder for our readers: If you are on Facebook, be sure to look for the City and "like" us at City of Kirkwood, MO (Government). On Facebook, we post breaking stories (yes, they do happen in Kirkwood!), road closings, and some great photos as well as "shares" from Kirkwood Public Library, MoDOT, and other places we think have good info for you. This link should get you there: https://www.facebook.com/CityOfKirkwoodMo. The City's Facebook posts get carried over to Twitter as well, so if you only do Twitter on your phone, you can follow us there for road closings and event reminders: @kirkwoodcity. As always, if you have Kirkwood photos to share, we'll take 'em! You can send them to your editor at Info@kirkwoodmo.org. Be sure to let me know that it's okay to use them in this newsletter and/or on Facebook, and add a few sentences describing the photo. Thank you! Have a great weekend, and see you next Thursday!
